@me1195 yes, they are really no different from any other locs, just more manicured looking if you got them done more often. This method works for me on both palmrolled and latchhooked locs.
lol i like your personality...(i'm gonna try that 'kickn a spark off my daughters behind' thing when she gets out of line lol) anyway, it looks like you have a similar grade of hair than mine, i was natural more than 10 years before i decided to lock so i know it's gorgeous...awesome way to re-lock!
@shekinahalive I have heard of some people beginning theirs in that manner without issues. I didn't do that personally but I'm sure it can work as long as you take them off after awhile and let your hair hold naturally.
Pinky: Your hair is gorgeous and when I ran across this video I was afraid that you were going to take them all down. I am so happy that you didn't do that. Your vidos are vwery inspirational and It helps me to be patinet through my stages. I have been locking for 7 months and counting.
Thank you so much for posting this. You have inspired me and as a result, I have began the process of taking down my locks of about 12 years. I started a video series too. Thank you sooo much!
Apple cider vinegar rinses?? Can you tell us how you do that and what products you use please. This video is absolutely amazing!! You're a great teacher keep up with the postings please!
Beautiful!! You are an amazing woman. I have been wanting to go onto the fantastic journey of locking my hair, but I was afraid I would have to shave it if it didn't work out. You are beautiful. Beautiful locks! Thank you so much.
P.S. Thank you for the apple cider vinegar tip. I love learning how to do things before I do them, and clean, clean, clean is a must!!!
Hey guess what! I figured out a way to take them down with alot less hair loss. I dont know if this will work for everyone else but I left my conditioner on for about 30 minutes and then I had to go back in and re wet it of corse. But after I started the ends it let me ply it apart with my fingernails and just pull out the grit. Of corse I had to keep re wetting it but its awesome. You're the best.
Awesome! Last night I went home and used my conditioner and a fork. I un locked one and its beautiful. You were right I didnt lose all my hair at all. I got nervous because I saw another girl on here yesterday who basically took all her hair out while combing it. Of corse for some strange reason she was trying to use a flea comb. Well at any rate you are awesome and this will definitly be a labor of love. Thanks so much
Wow, it would seem like a loctictian would know better. Do they have locs themselves? That is puzzling how a so called professional would not know this. the only hair that is "dead" is the hair you would have shed normally anyhow. The rest is intact just like with any hairstyle.
lady i fuccin love you ! now ima get dreads , i been very hesitant bout getin them cuz i have very good hair n i was scared if i didnt want em i wuld have 2 cutt all my hair off ! but NOW dat i no i dnt have 2 cutt it ima get em :) thank yooouuuu . i knew it was possible lol . thanks again you jus made my day .
Great vid when i heard that you could take down locs like this it made up my mind to loc., lol. That was 3 years ago and im still going strong. youve probably inspired many new people to loc with this vid, Thanks so much. Oh yes...did you sew your locs together to combine them?
I have had my second set of locs for almost 4 years and decided I wanted a change and was really dreading cutting my hair. It does take some patience and time but it is indeed possible.
I don't know. I can't reply out of the scope of what I do with my own hair. I am not a professional. Just a girl with locs that shares information hoping it can be helpful to others in some way. All things don't work with everyone depending on the method, maintenance and hair type of the individual.
omg! im soooo ready to chop my locs after 6 years! don't get me wrong, I LOVEEE My hair, BUT im just ready for a new look. Thanks for this tutorial, i am no longer doing the BIG CHOP lol i'll just comb them out!! yay!
All I was was doin' wass tryin' to be cool, but that bitch made me go all the way off!!! You see, naturally matted hair is....shut yo ass up, and get yo ass in the kitchen , and cook me some chicken! Great tutorial.
Thank you so much, now when people ask me about cutting my locs off I can tell the no I can take them loose and still have the same length of hair. You are a blessing keep up the good work and thank you for telling us how to remove lint from our locs with apple cidar vinegar. I'm going to do that today.
Dead? No. There will be hair that would have shedded naturally embedded in the lock as well, but in this video I took down a loc that was 3 yrs old. The hair is not dead. The re-twisted loc is now almost 5 yrs old and is growing and thriving. I've taken down others before as well, you cannot tell those from locs which have never been separated.
Wow! Now that's dedication!!!! I'm not sure you can keep all that length you acquired because lots of the hair sheds into the locs over the years, but you probably can keep a decent beyond shoulder length if you are extremely careful. Whew, I can't imagine trying to take down 20 yrs worth!
It's an easy process, rinse your hair, pour the apple cidar vinegar over your hair. Put on plastic cap if you think you need more time to break up the oils which hold the lint. Then shampoo as normal paying attention to the ends to break out the lint. That's it. Not as hard as it sounds.
I've always been scared of getting locs cause I thought they were so permanent, but not anymore. Thanks for the knowledge, probably still not going to get them but at least I know if I do I can take them down. Thanks for this video!
awesome i am natural with no locs and was thinking of doing locs just to get some length quicker...was skeptical cause i didn't want to have to cut it after all those years...i love you , you are hilarious thanks so much for this video
This is sensational - my husband asked if I was going to take my locks out - and I told him that I didn't want to but if I did it is WONDERFUL to know how - also I can have it relocked if I want to in a different way or try a different Natural Style (like doing it during the winter for spring) - your video is wonderful and I like your personality alot!
Keep in mind that I hear that extremely long locs like hers will still get shorter. This is due to the fact that the hair entangled in the loc has long since left the root and is embedded in the hair. So when it's taken down that hair will shed. But, she will retain some length which is better than nothing. Hope things turn out ok for her.
I've never really heard that it would unless your hair was damaged while still locked. I can't speak for everyone but I had no issues taking any out or re-locking them.
I watched this commentary on Friday night. Began unlocking on Saturday Morning, finally finished Sunday morning. My natural hair (which will stay that way)is really long and healthy. Thanks! At first I thought I had to cut all my hair off. Thank God for your tutorial!
Most of the women I see that take them down have pretty long locks. Onyxanya cut hers in half and THEN took them down and her hair is still at least shoulder length. Soooooo if length is your thing and you want to take your locks down, you're probably going to be really disappointed if you envision your hair being the same length loose as it is locked.
I wish I'd known about that "dental implement" when I took down my locs. I used a push pin and I DON'T recommend it because I'm pretty sure it shredded my hair. But it might not have mattered what I used because in the end I simply didn't have the time or the patience to take down 160 3.5-year-old locs, so I ended up doing the BC. I've never had a problem wearing short hair so it wasn't that big of a deal for me but for folks who want to hang on to the length...TIME and PATIENCE are REQUIRED!
LOL!! I LOVE YOU!! Dinner fork. I have been searching high and low for take down methods and your video is very very timely. Thank you for your fantastic suggestions. I'm doing it tonight.
Thank you(x2)! This was a timely vid. I watched your headwrap vid and loved it and decided to watch this out of curiousity. I was at the time, sat struggling to detangle my twists which had decided they were going to be locks for a day (after a braid take down). I watched your vid and detangled my psuedo locs easily. I would've had to cut out the knots. Thanks again. You saved my hair! It is short at the moment, and I am trying to grow my hair out so cannot afford to lose any length.
sis I am going through a phase . I am so ready to cut my locs now but im just nervous. SIGH... Ive been locking for 6years. I will be 7 years in march 08. So I need all of the support I can get.. watching your vid really helped me alot. I just pray that it will work for me.
lol, my hair locs up by accident when I just don't comb it for three days (it's v. curly - I have no time, people) - I will buy this loc detangler for my regular hair, lol
OMG!!!! i totally thought it was permenantlly locked forever. i was tellin my brother no you have to cut it off...damn! im wrong... but its worth it cus when you undo it your hair is gona be sooo long
Thanks so mush for posting! I've had locks for 5 years now and I am yearning for my natural fro again. I'm so glad I don't have to chop my hair all the way down!
You could make a fortune!!! Charge $500 a head and give me 5% for suggesting. lol. I try to tell people that it can be done, now I have a vid. Thanks.
I like this video i just put to locs together on my hair also because one was getting to thin and now i know what to do so i won't have doubble locs at my end when it grow out thanks for the video
this is a great vid very helpful i actuall loosed a lock in the front of my hair wrapped it around another and then latched the roots-that worked better for me rather than loosing the two together-and also give me some advice on how to use the nappturality site-i have no clue how to use it the whole thing is all confusing to me.lol
When you go to the site and on the left there should be a "napptural forums" section under the website navigation heading. After clicking that, look for the section on locs discussion. In there should be an abundance of info. If there is a topic you are searching for. Go to the top in the search box and type it in. You will learn it as you do it more often. Hope that helps.
OH less time consuming for sure. It's just that some people are afraid to lose all the hair growth, which keeps them from locing in the first place. I just wanted to suggest this option to them. I think when I'm done I will chop mine off also, depends on the person basically.
Think this will only work on medium to thick sized locks and depending on the typ of hair you have. It its thin and soft like mine then it will surely break off especially when the locks are micro sized sisterlocks and you just want to start over again with bigger locks
I would think that sisterlocs size would take a million years to take down this way, lol. I'm not sure about the hair types honestly, but I do know that when you loc and if you don't use too much coloring, your hair is at it's strongest and can withstand things that you thought it couldn't. As far as bigger locs have you tried combining the ones you have? It could work as well I think. Mine were very small at first, I thought they would eventually break so I combined into what you see now.
I'm glad it was helpful. Some are afraid to try locs just because they believe that you must cut all of your hair off to get rid of them. Hopefully this will assist more in making the decision to loc it up if that is what was keeping them from going for it!
Thanks for posting this video! Very informative. I heard it could be done, but didn't really believe it. When I decide not to where my hair loc'd anymore, I have another option.
Pinky that's stoopid! LOL! Thanks for sharing this video and educating me, awesome! It certainly gives a whole new perspective on the journey of locs and "cutting" down all the "negatives" that some people want to toss out there about locs. If I ever make the decision to take my hair down, it won't be such a painful decision. You rock! JMW74
@Emejotah yes it should. Just be careful and saturate them well with conditioner or loc take down. Take your time and it should work.

I had locs and unlocked them yesterday.
It took me one day to untangle them all because I didn't stop and had help.

All locks are is dead hair and when you unlock them majority of the length you will lose because thats just dead hair.

I don't think you can comb out latched locs though. :(. That's why I'll have to go back to palmrolling before I comb them out.
Music0723 3 years ago
Actually I latch and palmroll my locs, so it will work.
Pinky2D4 3 years ago
Yes you can I latch mine as well and you can comb them out

i find using a flea comb in combo with a rat tail and detangler works better for me, but i think this is a great vid yoru a great teacher.

You could make a fortune!!! Charge $500 a head and give me 5% for suggesting. lol. I try to tell people that it can be done, now I have a vid. Thanks.
Troxler1911 3 years ago
LOL you can have 100% cause there is NO WAY I would have the patience to do this on entire heads of locs over and over again ROTFL!!!

A combination of comb coils and two strand twists depending on if the baby loc would hold or not.

this is a great vid very helpful i actuall loosed a lock in the front of my hair wrapped it around another and then latched the roots-that worked better for me rather than loosing the two together-and also give me some advice on how to use the nappturality site-i have no clue how to use it the whole thing is all confusing to me.lol
shanikasears 3 years ago
When you go to the site and on the left there should be a "napptural forums" section under the website navigation heading. After clicking that, look for the section on locs discussion. In there should be an abundance of info. If there is a topic you are searching for. Go to the top in the search box and type it in. You will learn it as you do it more often. Hope that helps.

thanks i will try again
shanikasears 3 years ago
OH less time consuming for sure. It's just that some people are afraid to lose all the hair growth, which keeps them from locing in the first place. I just wanted to suggest this option to them. I think when I'm done I will chop mine off also, depends on the person basically.
Pinky2D4 3 years ago
Think this will only work on medium to thick sized locks and depending on the typ of hair you have. It its thin and soft like mine then it will surely break off especially when the locks are micro sized sisterlocks and you just want to start over again with bigger locks
vandayer 3 years ago
I would think that sisterlocs size would take a million years to take down this way, lol. I'm not sure about the hair types honestly, but I do know that when you loc and if you don't use too much coloring, your hair is at it's strongest and can withstand things that you thought it couldn't. As far as bigger locs have you tried combining the ones you have? It could work as well I think. Mine were very small at first, I thought they would eventually break so I combined into what you see now.
Pinky2D4 3 years ago
I'm glad it was helpful. Some are afraid to try locs just because they believe that you must cut all of your hair off to get rid of them. Hopefully this will assist more in making the decision to loc it up if that is what was keeping them from going for it!
Pinky2D4 3 years ago
Thanks for posting this video! Very informative. I heard it could be done, but didn't really believe it. When I decide not to where my hair loc'd anymore, I have another option.

Wow thats good to know and see at the same time, I thought it was impossible to do
renceferd83 3 years ago
Pinky that's stoopid! LOL! Thanks for sharing this video and educating me, awesome! It certainly gives a whole new perspective on the journey of locs and "cutting" down all the "negatives" that some people want to toss out there about locs. If I ever make the decision to take my hair down, it won't be such a painful decision. You rock! JMW74
