Her tone is so rich, pure, and full of emotion without ever resorting histrionics or melodramatic vocal tricks that it's almost crazy. She sang the hell outta Boz' song and I think she gave a pitch-perfect interpretation whereas Boz as the songwriter delivers it with his own unique personal perspective. Comparisons are subjective for sure--and for me, Rita's vocal is technically superior w/o taking anything away from the great Scaggs.

I disagree, while Boz Scaggs did a good job writing this song, i didn't like his voice, i couldn't finish watching his version. Rita Coolidge's voice is definitely the best at singing this. This goes on my list of cover songs that are better than the originals.

..How back in those days i was never keen on pop music but you cant beat it now...lovely voice brings back all the memories of my Mum making the tea for us when me my brother and sister came home from school...how we used to listen to the radio on lovely evening together as a family...It dosnt matter who sings it beter ,it dosnt matter about other people comments about the originol version, this is the one that we think of that stirs up all those emotions. yes i agree lovely

Memories bittersweet in Music from the Summer of 1977. Higher & Higher was out on the radio before Elvis Presley died. Then this song came out when he died in August and peaked in the Fall. I felt this song was more powerful from the Album which was released in March 1977 than Higher & Higher. It should have been on all the radio stations first in May before Higher And Higher.

I like her version of this song better than Boz Scaggs but I like Jackie Wilson's version of Higher And Higher better.
