No this technically wasn't illegal. The Geneva Convention states torture can not be conducted on military personnel. Al Queda and the Taliban are NOT military. I agree that it is useless, because people will just tell you what you want to hear under enough torture, but it wasn't TECHNICALLY illegal to use torture.

By analogy torturing a convicted terrorist to prevent 1 million people from dying is the more ethical choice than taking a course of action that will knowingly incur collateral damage if the goal is also to save 1 million people.

To get soldiers to fight someone who really hasn't done anything to them, they need to be brainwashed against the "enemy". I don't think people should be surprised that the US Armed Forces (or some members) tortured, killed etc suspects (that turned out to be innocent in many cases.)
Really, since the 1960s, the Army, CIA, etc has been "experimenting" by giving prisoners, unsuspecting patients in psychiatric hospitals and other civilians some LSD and G-d knows what else. It was done in the name of "research".
I was least surprised when the abu graib pictures came out.

I agree; however, I think this boils down to what you consider torture. I find NOTHING wrong with water boarding...as long as it does not kill them or cause permanent physical harm. Hiiamrick, I am not saying that nothing is wrong with torture. Since I feel that water boarding (or any other non-permanent physically discomforting method) is fine, I am cool with using those methods to get information... I am NOT into cutting of fingers, limbs, heads, etc... I would have been in favor of water boarding Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, if FBI thought there was a need. Personally, I think they should have hanged them slowly... then shot them!

As for the countries that sponsor terrorism, I think we agree on that note :) Lastly, I believe the manner in which terrorists/criminals attack innocence, should be the exact method in which they are punished! By analogy torturing a convicted terrorist to prevent 1 million people from dying is the more ethical choice than taking a course of action that will knowingly incur collateral damage if the goal is also to save 1 million people.
Conclusion
If Premise number 1 and 2 are true then torture can be morally justified as a defensive action to prevent 1 million people from dying.

The reason toture is illegal has much to do with morallity - but more to do with the fact that torture produces erroneous intel.
Al Libby is one example, sent to Egypt by the CIA to be tortured, he gave much of the bad intel used to support the Iraq war. The intel turned out to be bigus - made up to save his life.
Fact1.Cheney invaded and occupied the wrong country. This in itself makes us all less safe.
Fact2.Those who support Cheney and his policies are a danger to this country.
