This is the best tournament ever played. I still remember it. Jack's charge and Norman's comeback. All the great players at the top of the leader board. Still to this day I think Greg's birdie on 17 is the best I have seen, only to be betrayed by the same 4 iron on 18. Greg is such a legend of the sport it is a injustice that he doesn't have a green jacket.
Spot on dtg0947. So many times Norman did incredible things to get into contention, only to be remembered for the bad shots. He was pure box office. The reason people tuned in. Do they turn on now to watch Lee Westwood? Luke Donald? No. That doesn't make them bad players but Greg Norman rollin' like Phil Mickelson at Royal St George's on Sunday (-6 thru 10) is why every pro player today plays for big TV money. They should give Greg & Phil 10%.
This sequence perfectly sums up Norman's career. Everyone remembers the shoved 4-iron and bogey on 18. Most remember that he was the 54-hole leader, as he was for every major that year. No one remembers that, after blowing the lead, he birdied 14-15-16-17 (with that incredible recovery shot on 17) to pull into a tie with Jack, and set up the losing bogey. Classic example - good and bad - of why Norman was such a compelling figure to watch.
@dtg0947 i agree this sums up norman.the reason he was so great to watch and galleries flocked to see him was his agrresive style of golf.it what got him into contention so many times yet cost him so many tournaments, the man did not no when to back off.it was shot down flags and birdie every hole.although he may not have won a masters i would watch this every day of the week over golf today.still no one can light up a course like the shark and that why we love him
It wasn't his aggressive style that cost him majors. It was the fact that he would hit irons 40 yards right under pressure.
