  • I suppose my 1st exposure to quarter-tone/microtonal music was Ben Johnston's Sonata for Piano and Chas. Ives 3 Pieces. I like the sound world of Johnston better than this piece by Haba. There seems to be a measured difference in the 2 techniques that just makes Johnston easier for me to listen to, and enjoy.

  • I really like quarter tone music. (I know, I need to see a good therapist). The only issue I have with this piece is that, while the harmony has some merit, the structure and general movement of the melody seems very traditional. Still thumbs up for people who want to do something new.

  • I dont like it, the semitones just seem wrong. Guess im just a mortal....

  • The schnozzberries taste like schnozzberries

  • "FUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOU PYTHAGORAS!" - Alois Hába

  • it's like Chopin's etude 5 op 25 but performed in so lazy manner that one could say it's three times longer..

  • It is really hard to apreciate this at first hearing, but if we listen carefully and many times, we can see this is an interesting kind of music. :)

  • Though I am open minded and respect the concept, I can imagine what someone with perfect pitch experiences when they hear someone play slightly out of tune. Must be excruciating.......

  • AGH! MY EARS! THIS! IS! HORRIBLE!

  • nice :)

  • To the lifetime piano player (me), this sounds great. I want to do it too.

  • aaaarggh!!!!!!!!!!

  • Upon first hearing, Alois Hába seems to be a pretty awesome guy.

  • This is simply awesome!

  • Aaaagggghhh

  • @Charliearo1196 This.

  • I have a little problem with this method of using quartertones: it sounds like a piece where are not indispensable. It seems to me that without quartertones it would be basically the same, just less unusually sounding.

  • @lyricaltones You can say that for most pieces. With fewer tones, they would sound less interesting. Take Bach's Prelude No. 1 and take out every second tone and it would sound less interesting, too.

  • Even if it was normal tuning, it'd still be shite. The quarter tuning was introduced into it to get more listeners, out of curiosity.

    Just my opinion

  • @simonofhell If it were “ shite ”, you would still be ignorant.

  • Yep,that's like my grandma's old piano sounds

  • @artbasss lol!

  • I've been a lifelong classically-minded musician, and I've tried really really really hard to enjoy this...I just can't. Interesting and appreciable yes, but not enjoyable.

  • @cthep Try Sami al Shawa. It's oriental music. I have bought an album very good on I tunes. It has nothing to do with that. It gives a good idea what the ''quarter tones'' are.

  • Comment removed

  • Surreal but unquestionably genius, and uniquely beautiful; and surprisingly approachable for quarter-tone music

  • Westerns using Quarter-tone in a wrong way... harmonized quarter-tone suck... quarter-toned can sound nice if it played in a mono solo.

  • @HeaVeNeRq8 Its all about new sonorities, maybe you just need time to start to adapt to it, cuz its kinda complicated to like it at first hearing.

  • @RodrigusVI Do you know a bit of oriental music? or you just like this contemporary music?

  • @murdechoc Both

  • @HeaVeNeRq8 "Nice" is subjective.

  • @HeaVeNeRq8 No one "owns" the "way" to use quarter tones. Some people would say non-harmonized melodic lines suck. Get over yourself.

  • @HeaVeNeRq8 It's silly to say someone's making music "the wrong way". If someone wants to make it a certain way, they damn well can.

  • @HeaVeNeRq8 I actually think it sounds sort of nice! I love how it adds complexity to the piece. In addition, nothing in music can technically be "wrong". Westerns use quarter-tones in their own way.

  • @HeaVeNeRq8

    What does "harmonized" mean?

  • @twooffour The various theories of harmony tell you what notes can be played together at one time, and how to move from one combination of notes to another. Anyone can invent a harmonic theory, and write music based on it. Some are more popular than others.

  • @ClueBand

Doesn't answer my question in the slightest.

  • @twooffour Why not? If "harmony" is what I said, it follows that "harmonised" means a note or a melody that has been added to by other notes or groups of notes (chords). The choice of what notes or groups of notes can be used depends on the particular harmonic system chosen. If this is not enough, I'm afraid you only a course at the local music school or conservatorium will be of help.

  • @ClueBand

Ah, I've just read the comment again, yea, he meant the adding of "vertical" harmony to the "mono solo"... probably because of the beats.

I wonder if it's possible to remove the beats with digital technology (or maybe just sound editing?), since it's basically just evening out the volume... and whether there are programs that do it automatically.

  • @HeaVeNeRq8 it is... for ur ear only!! its just the technique of harmonization that makes that out of tune sound

  • @HeaVeNeRq8 listen to julian carrillo! he is so much better than Haba

  • It sounds like I am listening toclassical music on drugs.

  • My brain is full of FUCK, I listened 4 times on a row, that´s more than 20 minutes of this song.

    Feels Good Bro

  • Difficult and challenging to learn since there are no melodies you can remember or relate to. Very interesting!

  • Sounds more cheery than most of the quarter tone stuff I've heard on here.

  • So weird. Perfect.

  • Надо же и не одного комментария на русском языке!

Такое впечатление, что в нашей стране живут одни дибиллы!

А музыка сильная! просто плакать хочется (от боли)

  • 17 edo

  • @microtonalismo No, its 24 edo

  • @RodrigusVI ...which is not to say that 17-EDO is not also worth looking into...

  • Wow, what a piece of music. Even though the quarter tones can be jarring at first, I found this beautiful, mysterious, and even jazzy at times. Makes me wonder what else kind of scales and harmonies can be produced with quarter tones.
