Houndour/Houndoom is indeed a great pokemon, but the problem I find with it is how late you get it in Gold and Silver. By the time you get there, you've already formed your party and there's no room for newcomers, no matter how cool they are.

lots of people wonder about magneton. So here's my theory: The more it levels up, the more magnetic energy it gets. Once it levels up to the right level, It will link onto 2 more. Then it's energy level stays the same. If you don't want it to evolve, you hope for one that has a slow magnetic field acceleration.
