  • Tim McGraw is the sessiest man eva. EVA.

  • @kalabwashere the son was invited to visit the father in prison...Tim explained it the first year he did it in concert

  • it doesnt really matter wheather he still had one good parent, it still hurts to know that your father deserted you and could care less until you prove em wrong and actually do something with your life.

  • The son is in jail NOT the father because the son says if youre here why would he say that if he is visiting his father the kid also talks about smoking and doing bad shit not to mention they tell the kid hes out of time not the other way around

  • @kalabwashere the son is in jail not the father whys it so hard for people to understand

  • @kalabwashere Exactly, and the father also says "I can't believe some son of mine could do the things I hear you've done." So, the son is clearly the one in jail.

  • It was my mom alone and i dont care if my dad was there, i dont have time to be wallowing in self pity,at least one parent was there and she never stared me wrong....She taught me how to love myself no matter what,i dont need a man to make me happy and how precious and worthy i am....I thank for her everyday so am not walking around sad cuz my dad wasnt there i really dont have time for it....Maybe its just me but i think sum1 out there feels the same

  • well i think that mums and dads that dessert their kids,as far as im concerned is a sin, and they should be punished, i have watched my kids, with out their dad, what ever happnes to parents breaking up, should not be taken out on the kids,

nite after nite you sit alone worrying about bills being paid, desisions to make im ok but my kids will be scarred, hope they come out as good parents id die for my kids xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • my dad left me and me and my mom are hardly makeing it i hate him and i never want to see him again i had brokein my leg he was not there i smashed my face he as not thter i broke my arm he was not there my point is i f u can spend time with your dad do that becase think of the people like me and the kid under my comment

  • I love when people use their talent to put out such important messages. Hope it is contagious!

  • yep ,I reckon its one of macca,s best song .

  • The dad is in prison, isnt he?

  • @AMahomieForLife Yes he is.

  • the first time i heard this song i almost cried

  • Luckily,

I have gone through divorce when I was 5. It was hard, but Dad always worked good jobs, Mom had a good job & they made sure we were ALL taken care of, I feel for the people who have posted here cause 1 of my best friends ended up in Prison! He had 3 kids & a wife. I tried to help out as much as I could. My parent knew him 2 & it shocked the hell out of them, but even they tried because Buddy is a friend of the family who took a wrong turn. It could happen to anybody!

  • I was fortunate enough to have a dad that always there for me. But for a buddy his dad was never there for him and my dad kinda took him in and took him in and hed take him fishin and campin with us and he ended up becomein pretty much my brother.

  • I thought the father was in the prison and the son had done something, that the dad is proud of and he is like, visiting his dad in Prison.

  • The FATHER is in prison. When he says, "I read it in the paper I can't believe you're 21, Can't believe some son of mine could do the things i heard you've done." He is proclaiming praise to the son as to say congratulations for being better than your imprisoned father. This fact is further supported later by the boy saying, "dry it up man we ain't making this about you" as to say that the son is there to get an apology from his father who was not there while the child was growing.

  • @sanewsom1 No because he also says "And the boy said "If your here To steer me right, man, its to late"

  • I shared this song with my 11 year old daughter and she said "that is how i feel mom but it is my dad that is bad not me and I have done so good cause of you and daddy" It completely broke my heart. her real dad is in and out of her life and my husband has raised her since she was 6 years old. This song is the greatest song I have heard lately....

  • This song reminds me of my real dad.. He wasnt wit me growing up but now that im almost 18 and doing something wit my life and see mr barrel racing and roping he want to be in it.. All he want to do is brag.. I give all my credit to my step daddy.. Love you Daddy.. Your Baby Girl..

  • Comment removed

  • im not in prison but this is the story of my life.. i kno ill never leave a girl with my kid!

  • when i was a baby my dad went to jail for about 2 weeks my mom brought me there to visit him along with my siblings when he got out my dad got into a fight with my mom saying my kids should not see me there ever again and he was right

i remember seeing my dad is jail....wasn't pretty

  • copy and paste EveryGenreLyrics in youtube to find the lyrics

  • im 18 and just had a little girl. i dont see how anybody could be that selfish to leave a child they helped create. having a dad makes a huge difference in anybodys life.

  • @petrea15 stay there man, my pop left me at 8 months, i hate him. im 15 now and i could use some help with shit and hes not there, im going to play baseball at asu in 2 years, and it is realy hard to practice with a wall, at least i have a step dad, but my moms in iraq in the army and my step dads in texas national gaurd, im in az, just aint right. stay with the kid.

  • I think this could be the best song on the Album. There are several strong contenders, but it's got such strong lyrics, and catchy too. & it tells such a powerful story that I believe many people out there could relate to.

"You had to be there, and I'm talkin from day one, that's the only time a man should talk through glass to his new son"

  • Ok people the SON is in prision thats why at the end THE SON says "they say im outta time" and the father says "oh my god son so am I" with the meaning he wasnt around enough to be a father and now he has lost his chance to be the father he wishes he could have been all thoes years earlier and kept his son out of troble and he wouldnt be at the prison talking to his son the way he is now. Hope that sets everything straight

  • my father left me for dead in a hospital when I was 3 days old i didnt see him again until i was 10 then he put me back in the hospital for 6 months just because i touched his watch. the next time i saw him he was sitting behind glass calling me "son" I looked at my mother then at him and told him " this is my mother, my father my best friend, something you never could be or understand how to be" Im now a father figure to my nephew and I swear i will never see him behind glass or bars.great song

  • im not a fan of country but i can relate and he did a great job on this song... thankfully im not in prison! haha

  • FUCKEN RED NECK MUSIC...GO BACK TO EUROPE

  • @vaniedominique you are a goose !!!!!!!!!

  • Great Song. Co-written by my friend Kenneth Wright. I hope it becomes a huge hit.

  • @MrsPurple77 It is a great song! Please ask Kenneth to set the record straight on which character is in prison, the son or the father?

  • This video reminds me of my birth father that has been in jail off and on throughout my life...my stepdad raised me until I was 8 years old and he was shot and killed by my neighbor my dad never even claimed me...But at the age of 17 I have learned that my life is getting better and I now have a guardian angel in heaven watching over me as we all do there is so much to life so I have learned to be happy and always have high hopes never let anyone or anything get you down no matter what be happy

  • @tman1151 sounds like your song would be Brad Paisley "The man He didn't have to be", I cry an think of my step dad whenever I here it, cause my step dad may not be the greatest but hell he tried his best

  • @tman1151 my dad was there thats what i ment but it still almot made me cry and made me think of how my bro had it (step but i dont care) my dad left him when he was 4

  • my dad was there thats what i ment but it still almot made me cry and made me think of how my bro had it (step but i dont care) my dad left him when he was 4

  • who thumb down this? this is a good song with a good singer good sound good EVERYTHING it almost made me a 16 year old boy shed a tear (i might have if my dad wasent there from day one)

  • @spyguy1994 It was some hip hop loving rapper who thumbed it down

  • @schjothii o a "PUNK" thumb down

  • no, what the song is saying is that the DAD was in prison. AND NOW HES TRYING TO TALK TO HS SON AND HIS SON IS REJECTING HIM FOR NOT BEING THERE THE WHOLE TIME.

  • i like this song...not because i can relate. i mean i certain ways i could but i like it because it helps me see all iv got. iv gotta father whos there for me unlike his was for him. i love my daddy and i am very greatful for him.

  • Maybe if this song gets over 100K views they will make a video, finally

  • @tigerfire25 That would be freakin awsome, Tim McGraws gettin older but hes still got it for sure

  • i dont have this experience that you guys all seem to have had but my father did with his dad my grandpa was never there and as for me i just really like the song

  • @redneckwomans1fan no its not the boy is. listen to the lyrics a little closer and then i think ull hear it

  • is it the dad or the son in prison?

  • @Brendi96 The son is the one in prison because in the song it sais "I read it in the paper can't believe you're 21. Can't believe some son of mine can do the things I hear you've done. He went on like some big hero, who flew in to save the day. And the boy said if you're here, to stear me right man it's to late."

  • is the dad in prison or is the son in prison

  • some poor fag missed the like button

  • this reminds me of my dad.. he left when i was 2 and so i was homeless for 2 years and then found some apartments where i was beat up alot and then we got kicked out of them each year. When we found a town-house, i got beat up even more and i had to join a gang.. when my mom got remarried when i was 9 it was too late. i couldnt ever trust him to be a good dad that i think he could be to my 2 litttle half brothers.

  • This is so true. This is not the situation for me but it is for a lot of the kid's I know who get in trouble. It's unfortunate.

  • 1 person missed the like button

  • I hope they make it a single. it's a great song.

  • @92ColeK the "the boy" is in prison. It's "About a kid who might have stood a whole lot better shot at life." Again if "the boy" has done well in life why would he say that? I think the chorus makes it clear. It's about the things the boy missed as well as the trouble he got into because his father wasn't there to make a difference. Actually I think Tim explains it during his Invitation Only special for CMT. I'll try to find it.

  • Love this song Dam dead beat dad's !

  • the reason tim is so great is that not only does he have emotional tracks, but he's a story teller. many country artists dont tell stories, they only sing lyrics

  • its sad when a father could be there yet he chooses not to be

  • yea it's basically saying the son is in prison because he was fatherless.. if the father was there when he was growing up he would've kicked his son's ass when he started doing bad things :P. but since he wasn't there to begin with the son ended up in prison.

  • He went on like some hero who flew in to save the day-- The dad talking about seeing his son in the paper. It's about the son gettin in trouble because he didnt have a dad there to show him what dads do.

sometimes the will to do wrong is too strong for any mom's prayers

  • this is awesome......so touching

  • i understand cuz i thought the son was dyin.......But hes in jail and hes on the phone with his son between the glass.

  • I love this song, whoever wrote it is a great guy! - Brandi

  • @MrHandymanLive tim Mcgraww

  • My older brother left last month. Killed me inside. He's 16 and my mom told me to look this song up. Reminds me of him. I listen to it everyday. My dad wasnt ther for 13 years and this song is just great overall. Very sad though

  • so much wisdom, ty tim, scary though makes me cry

  • makes me cry..

  • Love this song and most of the album

  • great song lol

  • I keep hearing about that mp4ify site. where can i find it? pulls audio and video from any youtube video to mp3 or mp4 files?

  • @minazahazazugemo No1 want's to go to your stupid fucking virus nest site, fuck off

  • Great song, But drives me fucking nuts

  • I thank God I have a man who would never give up on us. He's been there since day one for the last 17 yrs.

I wish more boys/men would listen to this song.

  • srry 2 all yall whos dads wasnt there 4 u..my dad isnt much of 1...

  • eh my dad left when my mom was prenate with me, i met my dad for the first time in a jail i was five and scared to death to meet some stranger,, but this song reminds me of my older brother, he looked to my dad as ahero but now he looks at him as a failure my brother helped my mom raise me and i could never repay him for that he tought me everything i know and im a better person for him

  • @rdnckcntrygrl LOOK The song is about the dad leaving his son when he was young.. Then when he hears that his son is in prison he comes to visit him and the son tells him how he should've been there.. At the end where the son says they say my time is up, the dad said yea his was too.. Which meant that his time was up and he wished he would've been there......

  • @rdnckcntrygrl good for you. i bet you're a good person.

  • I love this song, even though it makes me cry everytime. It reminds me so much of my cousin.

  • i love this song i sorry if you in that posion

  • if you listen to the song its the son who is in jail and the dad is meeting his son for the first time because he ran away before the son was born

easily one of the best songs tim mcgraws made yet

  • Nawhh duhh sherlockk. lmfao jk ! :)

  • i agree with everyone whos saying the son is in prison cause like when it says "I should have been learning how to fish instead of learning how to smoke"

  • The son is in prison... " He said I read it in the paper. Can't believe you're 21. Can't believe some son of mine would do the things I hear you done."

  • I agree with you...it was my original thought, but then I got confused.

  • @1001Characters it says "Can't believe some son of mine could do the things i hear you've done" the boy went and saw his "old man" in jail. his father said "i read it in the paper can't believe your 21" his dad is happy that he went and did something great with his life instead of following in his father's footsteps. and at the end the son says "They say i'm out of time" they tell the visitors that their time is up with the prisoner.

  • @1001Characters No the dad was telling his son that which was in prison

  • @XJustinxFoRdX16R3B3L Yeah I know that... I said the son is in prison

  • @1001Characters no. the dad is in prison

  • @acowboysince92 To quote Country Weekly's October 2009 interview with Tim, "You Had to Be There is the story of an absentee father who reappears in his son's life when he learns THE KID IS IN PRISON."

It's the son who is in prsion, not the father.

  • @AgentAshcroft the teenager is the mother, but the dad left his wife, but didn't go to prison, i believe that's what he means by "leaving high and dry"

  • No, i believe it's the son in prison, he said he has read the paper and can't believe some son of mine could do the things i hear you done" and the son said "if you here to steer me right, man its too late." Why would the dad steer his son right from prison? He's talking about how if his dad would have been there, he would have a better chance of staying out of the streets getting into trouble.

  • Reminds me of my dad, he aint never there, hes in prison and at 7 or 8 i had to be the man of the house... great song!

  • hang in there i met my dad first time behind him being bars but hey just hang in there & keep your head up mom always told me everyone in our town knew about my dad but hey it wasnt me

  • @161lane i never new my dad

  • @161lane This pretty much happened to me to my mom had me at 18 and my dad and her got a divorce. he had visitation and i would always go to my gpas and never see my dad. He was in and out of jail for DUIs. So my mom got full custody. I hadn't seen or talked to my dad since i was 7 and im 14 now. He finally came back into my life during my moms second divorce. Now him and my mom are fighting and it doesn't look good.

  • This song is partly about Tims life, his dad never really wanted anything to do with him during his childhood

  • it reminding of my brith dad

  • Mitch your my Freaking Idol!

    I Love you !

    LMAO

    You know it lol

    Jaylee xx

  • is the boy or dad in prison..the boy, right?
