I don't consider Judaism to be one of the world's major religions; it's only important because Islam and Christianity have their roots in it. Hinduism is the world's oldest religion and the third largest by number of followers, so I would place it in the top three. Judaism makes up only a fraction of the world's population, and most sects do not accept converts so it is unlikely to become a major world religion.

Oh, Poops1, go fuck yourself. The influence of a religion is not measured solely (or even primarily) by the number of its adherents. Get a goddamned clue.
"The world's three major religions" are Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism.
Judaism is highly influential in the West, especially as the starting point for Christianity and Islam, but is far smaller in terms of number of adherents today than Hinduism, Buddhism, or the Chinese traditions that involve Confucianism and Taoism.

Asia contains most of the people of this world and they don't follow Jewish teachings. Is it that Judaism is only seen as a major religion with regard to a very narrow West-centric world view?
Impact on the world would, in my humble opinion, be the *primary* criterion, yes. And the impact of Judaism must be measured not only by the religion itself, but also by the impact its major breakaway sect has had on the world, i.e., Christianity -- a global phenomenon.
One reason why Judaism is considered a major world religion is that from it sprang or emerged countless religious groups, and two of those are Christianity and Islam. A great part of what Christians and believers of Islam comes directly from Judaism.
I agree it did not tell you much if you are already familiar with the main arguments against theism. I found it moderately entertaining, but a bit disappointing. I was irritated also that he retold the often-seen (on the net) exaggerations about how certain Pagan gods were supposedly identical to Jesus (I think he talks about Osiris) - these comparisons have some interest but they are normally over-exaggerated with non-historical "facts" (so and so had 12 disciples and was born in a manger etc)
The Roman Aristocrat; Lucius Calpurnius Piso created the fictional characters of the New Testament: Jesus, his parents, Mary Magdalene, the apostles and disciples, Paul, John the Baptist, and tied them together with a slew of real people (King Herod, Pilot, etc) in a specific point in time and place in history. He used ancient stories and the writings and characteristics of various Pagan gods to create the story line of his birth, life, death, and resurrection.
It's no question that any religion that threatens people is showing their insecurity with their beliefs and I don't see how other can't see that and think that "maybe this religion (or any) is for me".
I looked at Holy Land website just now and found out that it would cost between 27-35 dollars to get into this place. I find this to be sacreligious to have to pay to see and learn about god and jesus! Hey I could be wrong but hey just my opinion.
Im not defending much of the bible because i agree that most of it is bullshit, but the argument you are making about the universe just being eternal is horse shit, nuh uh i dont buy it, there had to be something that started all of it. It could be floating starfishes out in space but just saying everything was here is as retarded as saying the dinosaur bones are here to test our faith so do me a favor and STFU
I'm not making any argument "about the universe just being eternal" here, Alexrad1. And, no, *you* do me a favor and shut the fuck up. In fact, I'll help you out. Bye!
lol the seven deadly sins didnt come from religion. And im not living my life to go to heaven even though that would be cool. I dont believe in hell. I dont believe anyone is going there. I believe in eveolution. I used to believe there wasnt God. But i do believe that the universe is full of patterns and that there are circumstances that happened to us for reasons. Therefore i believe in God. Oh and i dont go to church. But i dont condemn people for their beliefs either.
Despite the very unbalanced presentation of this film (It is very low class, undocumentarian and propagandist to edit his direct disgustions with religious people in what they say to the extent that he does) The very important message of this film is, Religion, Culture, or Tradition is NOT a good excuse for things that are blatantly stupid, and anyone who worships a religion that caused so much death is not only supporting the death caused, but also partly the cause of it. Why is Naziism worse?
Yea but if having faith includes raping the earth, destruction, death, poverty, then it involves other peopple. Its funny that people who are religous are trying to live good enough by gods needs so they can go to heaven and have eternal life, haha. Thats greed at its finest and that is also one of their 7 deadly sins
Sure i am why not? Especially with somehting like the mystery of death and after life. Does religion hold all the answer? No, but for some people it does so why ruin it for them. What makes you the expert, have you died? If someones perfectly fine living the way they are with their religion and values, why ruin it for them.
The answer to both your point and gsacco's point is simple. Believing in god is not the problem, neither is living a lifestyle that is in itself religious. The problem is following a religion that caused so much destruction, and not having the intelligence and conviction to live your own beliefs rather than being spoon fed a barrel of hypocritical nonsense. In the end Bill Maher and people like him seem a LOT happier than those who turn to religion out of despair to fill their emptiness.
i would like to see a scale and measure the people that feel better about having something after this life compared to the people that dont think there is. Proven or not im pretty sure its more stressful for most who think there is nothing. atleast theres comfort in beliveing. Im sorry but your comment is bullshit
so basically you're saying that no matter whether something is true or not, as long as it makes you feel happy, it's alright? I needn't point out the weird 1984/brave new world kind of fallacy you're getting into, do I?
So what is progress? Hey if you want me to progress in getting passed the possibility of there being some sort of a creator to everything whether it be God, Thor or Energy then why dont you shoot yourself and then come back to life and tell me what happens
The catholics were the most rational thinking of the bunch..which, rather amazed me. Especially, coming from a religion that thinks placing a condom on your wee wee is a major no no. Even the most rational can still manage to think irrational.
Has anyone noticed, that, the more educated a person becomes...the less they need and/or accept religion?
The only reason people believe in religion is because they are scared of what happens after death. They need an answer to the question that will never be answered.
in a desert of puerile opinion and adolescent posturing, its very welcome to get a considered post like this.
this debate will undoubtedly continue ad infinitum with more and more succumbing to the agnostic position which of course remains the position of all..even the pope must have his doubts.
Its a tricky thing, religion. I just cant let the words and actions of human beings in interviews and being reviewed sway my religious beliefs. Because we are all full of sin and can just be ill informed and ignorant. I think it isn't a good idea to let the actions and words of a few people change your mine. Faith is faith, you know?
btw dont get me wrong. i was brought up catholic but the facts are too much for me to ignore so i pretty much dont believe it anymore. i loved the flic and thought it was absolutely hilarious. as i have tried many religions and i agreed with every word.
actually three catholics were interviewed in the film. The first a Franciscan Monk in Amsterdam said being gay is ok. The 2nd was the vatican Astronomer who said going to the bible for science is stupid and the 3rd was a quirky preist in front of the vatican who said catholics dont pay attention to monotheism. The three catholics clergy were as dismissive of religion as bill maher was!
yesss. in my opinion pretty much everyone who claims to be catholic are either bitches, jerks, or old people. I really don't think I've ever known a good catholic, or one other than those above that really care about the religion in general.... this is coming from someone grown up catholic. haha
well I wouldnt go that far. my point was that the real wackos in the film were protestant fundementalists. In most cases they were more extreme than the muslims or the jews that Bill Maher interviewed. The Three catholics interviewed in the film were not extreme and in fact were liberal and reasonable.
A thoughtful analysis. However, I'd say it's more you pushing your obvious agenda, rather than an un biased criticism.
Why, again, is it so terrifying in what that Dana girl said? Does she HAVE to be a lesbian? Sounds like something religious fundies would say about homosexuals who are inherently monsterous.
As for the rest, I am in agreement with you. Certain aspects of organized religion are so rediculous and twisted that not even religious ppl like me can overlook.
"A thoughtful analysis. However, I'd say it's more you pushing your obvious agenda, rather than an un biased criticism."
LOL. Where did I say I was offering "unbiased criticism" here, Regelemihai? I'll save you the trouble: no where. I was offering an opinion, which is biased by definition.
I've watched the movie recently and was quite disappointed with the result. I love Mr. Maher as a stand-up or on his show. But all I could see in that movie was a stand-up trying more having fun at the expense of religions than actually pwn them. I must admit that I laughed, especially with the giant and his big penis, but I felt as though I was still starving at the end of the movie. I was expecting more of this movie.
I don't like that metaphor of ice, water and steam. There are four phases of matter, and they typically can't exist at the same time. When they actually do (at the triple point), there's just no real distinction. Great review. I've got to see that movie.
I understand you're going through the points quickly and simplified a bit, but there's a small point about Maher's reaction to the trinity/water thing. He says "you had me at 'ice cube'" only referring to the christian ladies there who were listening to his interview, saying "I can see how it would convince those women there", or something along those lines. Maher himself was adequately unconvinced.
That, and the trucker didn't say beating, only implied a "problem".. while clenching his fist.
The beginning and the projector sound is very noisy and annoying on the ear comparing to same volume on the rest of the video. It is really needed for you who use "DIGITAL" video editing to use it?
More child abuse from the christians. Getting children use to a man(the guy dressed as the jesus character) presents, and then visually torturing him in front of them.
hey prof, I did respond to your comments in a video, you can check it out at my channel, yeah it's just a typical "supersize me" or "the king of kong: fistful of quarters" movie.
I always assumed that documentaries are supposed to be factually accurate and not use editing to convey a different story than what it actually was. Then I read the real story behind "The King of Kong" and supersize me...just illusions.
nice review other than going on the Dena tangeant which really had nothing to do with any of it though you tried to make it that way. 4 1/2 stars without Dena but 3 1/2 stars because of that stumble.
I completely agree. Nothing really "wowed" me in film and I consider myself a rationalist and a 10-year Bill Maher fan. I think the reviewer's best point is that there is so much political correctness out there that restricts people from applying rational thought and debate toward religions.
I also wanted to point out that NOT everyone from Florida is a religious nut-job. It does seem tho, that we can't vote correctly (dangling CHADs) & we are always a punchline, but many of us are educated!
well i got this wrong actually, according to american english at least, you're pronouncing it right. i've never heard it like 'prim-er', i would have said 'pry-mer'. there's another definition of the word which is 'a device for a device for priming' and that has the 'pry-mer' pronunciation.
maybe its because i'm british and we have a different pronunciation? at least i hope we do.
aha, the primmer thing got me too. I was like, "did he just say primer?". As a canadian, I have a very similar accent to you, except for the odd word like primer or roof(/ruff)
I love how people (this includes all religions) spends a lifetime of energy blaming their lives on others and waiting for someone (or something) to save them.
We blame and then wait. We know we are the ones that have a problem but can't bare to face that it is ours so instead we blame everyone else.
We make drink alcohol,do drugs, make videos, preach, manipulate others etc to either forget or justify our lives instead of looking to ourselves and make our lives better.
Movies like this help skeptical people become more knowledgeable about the bullshit that is in the Bible. When I watched the movie I occasionally heard murmurs by other people in the theater indicating that they had not known "that" about the Bible.
The movie won't affect hard core believers and non-believers. It may sway those in between. For that it is useful.
I suspect that a large percentage of our population has "never really thought about it", so if they see this movie it will help.
When will we see more films challenging religion? We need more!
*sigh*
When will theists realize that their faith DOES NOT deserve respect? "Don't mock my religion", they say? The more they ask, the harder we should mock their silly superstitions!
I must correct you on one point. When you list the big 3 religions of the world you include Judaism. This is NOT one of the big religions, Hinduism and Buddhism believers far outnumber the number of Jews in the world. There are approximately 900,000 Jews in the world (far less than the Asian religions I mentioned). By the way you also mispronounced the name of the movie. It is supposed to be a contraction of the two words "Religious" and "Rediculous".
I've responded to the bit about Judaism several times already. I was not as specific as I should have been. It's the 3 great monotheistic religions. In any case, Judaism has, in my opinion, had far greater influence on the West than Hinduism, Buddhism, or any of the others. It's not just about the number of adherents.
"By the way you also mispronounced the name of the movie."
Once, yes. Wow, for someone who's never made a video, you're quite the critic. No doubt you're perfect. lol
The difference between Religulous audience and Expelled audience is that reasonable people take BOTH films with a grain of salt. People who can use logic and reason watch Religulous with critique, just as they do with Expelled.
No doubt, Religulous has to have its problems (to make a financially succesful movie). Tricking people to appear in the movie is wrong, no matter who does it.
Points Maher make are valid, and entertaining. Nothing new to atheists, methinks. Its just entertainment.
He may have tricked them into participating in his film but he doesn't put words in their mouths. They make themselves sound stupid. Expelled takes scientific ideas and completely distorts them and therefore is factually inaccurate. It also tries to take science and turn it into a world view which is not scientific. There is a major difference between the two.
I've read many of his discussions and critiques (if you will call them that, I would call them rants) on religion, he is nothing more then a sensationalist and a comedian.
If I were to look for a good atheist scholar, I would probably look towards Hitchens.I understand this movie is comedy but others take it too literally, need proof read some comments by atheists.
Several people have said this, Shenalmighty, but no one has said why this "might ruin his movie." It can't be that anyone truly believes that "accomplished philosophers and theologians" have theistic arguments that are beyond refutation. If they do, I certainly haven't heard them, and I've been listening for them. Moreover, the film is primarily about what the person on the street believes. I fail to see why the Christian Joe Six Pack's beliefs and the reasons he hold them should be ignored.
You're changing the subject, how would dead philosophers be relative? We are talking about interviewing philosophers. The fact remains most philosophy graduates work in church related services.
there is many types of philosophers. the types you are referring to, are definitely not rational.
as Bill Maher says, we are in the year of 2008 and we cannot believe in what we did 2008 years ago!
Why do you not try to accept how we have the technology to prove this and many are just being ignorant about it and beleiving in what they were told by their parents when they were 3.
You state "the 3 Major religions" : Christianity, Islam, ??? the Jews ??? The Jewish religion is bigger than Hinduism??? There are almost a billion Hindu's in the world.
Yes, I've addressed this already in comments. I was, of course, thinking primarily of the religions that have been most influential primarily but not exclusively in the West. However, it would probably have been more accurate to say "the three major monotheistic religions" or refer to them as Abrahamic.
In any case, I trust you didn't find my characterization too disturbing.
I wonder why the narrator says, "creeply describes as, [this curiousity toward men]," when talking about a lesbian who after being in a Christian's Worship Team starts to be curious about having sex with a man?
The narrator was trying to note how the lesbian couldn't bring herself to say she was attracted to men. She merely had "this curiousity" about them. Hardly indicative of the sort of miraculous transformation one would expect an omnipotent deity to accomplish in a devotee seeking to be changed.
The one thing I was slightly unfair was the depiction of Aki Nawaz's video as being pro-suicide bomber. The video in question is simply asking why a suicide bomber is worse than a bomb designer for Lockheed Martin. Other than that, a funny movie, although I can understand why people say Maher is a smarmy jerk sometimes.
I don't consider Judaism to be one of the world's major religions; it's only important because Islam and Christianity have their roots in it. He does not believe in religion because he is full of other crazy ideas. He is definitely not a skeptic. I guess that this is the moral of the story:
Not all nontheists and nonbelievers are rational, but all theists and believers are irrational by definition because they believe without evidence.

Impact on the world would, in my humble opinion, be the *primary* criterion, yes. And the impact of Judaism must be measured not only by the religion itself, but also by the impact its major breakaway sect has had on the world, i.e., Christianity -- a global phenomenon.
This isn't an East-West thing.
ProfMTH 2 years ago

He used ancient stories and the writings and characteristics of various Pagan gods to create the story line of his birth, life, death, and resurrection.

lol the seven deadly sins didnt come from religion. But i dont condemn people for their beliefs either.
alexrad1 2 years ago
Despite the very unbalanced presentation of this film (It is very low class, undocumentarian and propagandist to edit his direct disgustions with religious people in what they say to the extent that he does) The very important message of this film is, Religion, Culture, or Tradition is NOT a good excuse for things that are blatantly stupid, and anyone who worships a religion that caused so much death is not only supporting the death caused, but also partly the cause of it. Why is Naziism worse?
Brakathor 2 years ago
Yea but if having faith includes raping the earth, destruction, death, poverty, then it involves other peopple. Its funny that people who are religous are trying to live good enough by gods needs so they can go to heaven and have eternal life, haha. Thats greed at its finest and that is also one of their 7 deadly sins
gsacco666 2 years ago
Sure i am why not? Especially with somehting like the mystery of death and after life. Does religion hold all the answer? No, but for some people it does so why ruin it for them. What makes you the expert, have you died? If someones perfectly fine living the way they are with their religion and values, why ruin it for them.
alexrad1 2 years ago
The answer to both your point and gsacco's point is simple. Believing in god is not the problem, neither is living a lifestyle that is in itself religious. The problem is following a religion that caused so much destruction, and not having the intelligence and conviction to live your own beliefs rather than being spoon fed a barrel of hypocritical nonsense. In the end Bill Maher and people like him seem a LOT happier than those who turn to religion out of despair to fill their emptiness.

actually three catholics were interviewed in the film. The first a Franciscan Monk in Amsterdam said being gay is ok. The 2nd was the vatican Astronomer who said going to the bible for science is stupid and the 3rd was a quirky preist in front of the vatican who said catholics dont pay attention to monotheism. The three catholics clergy were as dismissive of religion as bill maher was!

well I wouldnt go that far. my point was that the real wackos in the film were protestant fundementalists.
Take care.

I've watched the movie recently and was quite disappointed with the result. I love Mr. Maher as a stand-up or on his show. But all I could see in that movie was a stand-up trying more having fun at the expense of religions than actually pwn them. I don't like that metaphor of ice, water and steam. There are four phases of matter, and they typically can't exist at the same time. When they actually do (at the triple point), there's just no real distinction. Great review. I've got to see that movie.
munificent7 2 years ago
I understand you're going through the points quickly and simplified a bit, but there's a small point about Maher's reaction to the trinity/water thing. He says "you had me at 'ice cube'" only referring to the christian ladies there who were listening to his interview, saying "I can see how it would convince those women there", or something along those lines. Maher himself was adequately unconvinced.
That, and the trucker didn't say beating, only implied a "problem".. while clenching his fist.

I completely agree. Nothing really "wowed" me in film and I consider myself a rationalist and a 10-year Bill Maher fan. I think the reviewer's best point is that there is so much political correctness out there that restricts people from applying rational thought and debate toward religions.

It is supposed to be a contraction of the two words "Religious" and "Rediculous".
tpeissig 3 years ago
I've responded to the bit about Judaism several times already. I was not as specific as I should have been. It's the 3 great monotheistic religions. In any case, Judaism has, in my opinion, had far greater influence on the West than Hinduism, Buddhism, or any of the others. It's not just about the number of adherents.

Its just entertainment.
latuman 3 years ago
He may have tricked them into participating in his film but he doesn't put words in their mouths. They make themselves sound stupid. Expelled takes scientific ideas and completely distorts them and therefore is factually inaccurate. It also tries to take science and turn it into a world view which is not scientific. There is a major difference between the two.

It would ruin his movie, simply based upon the fact he isn't well equipped to deal with an accomplished philosopher or theologian.

"It would ruin his movie, simply based upon the fact he isn't well equipped to deal with an accomplished philosopher or theologian."
And on what do you base that claim?
ProfMTH 3 years ago
I've read many of his discussions and critiques (if you will call them that, I would call them rants) on religion, he is nothing more then a sensationalist and a comedian.
If I were to look for a good atheist scholar, I would probably look towards Hitchens.I understand this movie is comedy but others take it too literally, need proof read some comments by atheists.
Shenalmighty 3 years ago
Ironic, he doesn't interview any accomplished philosophizers or theologians. But then again, that might might ruin his movie.
Shenalmighty 3 years ago
Several people have said this, Shenalmighty, but no one has said why this "might ruin his movie." It can't be that anyone truly believes that "accomplished philosophers and theologians" have theistic arguments that are beyond refutation. If they do, I certainly haven't heard them, and I've been listening for them. Moreover, the film is primarily about what the person on the street believes. I fail to see why the Christian Joe Six Pack's beliefs and the reasons he hold them should be ignored.
ProfMTH 3 years ago
its because most philosophers are not religious
and he tried to interview the average religious person, to show how it is, instead of the 0.1% of religious people who are philosophers

You're absolutely wrong, do some research.Clergy and other religious services are the number 1 occupation of philosophy graduates.
Shenalmighty 3 years ago
hahahaha it seems that you excluded people such as Marx, Hegel, Rene Descartes, Aristotle, etc.!!!!
What philosophers do is try to explain many things in alternative ways than the usual mass population.
They have explained the logic of the ways we have been created and how we have changed throughout the years.
They also changed politics forever, Marx's Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital served as the basis for political revolutions around the world.
What do YOU know about philosohpers?
NavidZady 3 years ago
You're changing the subject, how would dead philosophers be relative? We are talking about interviewing philosophers. The fact remains most philosophy graduates work in church related services.

there is many types of philosophers. the types you are referring to, are definitely not rational.
as Bill Maher says, we are in the year of 2008 and we cannot believe in what we did 2008 years ago!

Yes, I've addressed this already in comments. I was, of course, thinking primarily of the religions that have been most influential primarily but not exclusively in the West. In any case, I trust you didn't find my characterization too disturbing.

I wonder why the narrator says, "creeply describes as, [this curiousity toward men]," when talking about a lesbian who after being in a Christian's Worship Team starts to be curious about having sex with a man?
ssarryo 3 years ago
The narrator was trying to note how the lesbian couldn't bring herself to say she was attracted to men. She merely had "this curiousity" about them. Hardly indicative of the sort of miraculous transformation one would expect an omnipotent deity to accomplish in a devotee seeking to be changed.
