You guys run back to your gross generalizations and embarrassing misinterpretations of world events. I'm glad Mos Def got humiliated on TV. People who preach stupidity deserve to be called out and exposed as stupid. Mos Def kept derailing the conversations and obnoxiously clamored for attention at all turns. How dare he boast about having unpopular ideas in the presence of Salman Rushdie (and Hitchens as well). Willful ignorance at its worst. I used to think Mos Def was intelligent.
Fuck salmon rushdie and christopher hitchens. They are both old tired fat fucks who repetitiously repeat their same bullshit lines ad infinitum. Mos def is right, who the fuck is the U.S to dictate who can and can't have what!
huh? Mos Def had no knowledge of the issue at all, which is why he asked a question. Then he wouldn't listen to people who actaully have studied the issue. Sometimes you gotta know when to STFU and listen and learn.
mindlessly disagreeing with someone is not "thinking on your own" or "doing your own research". It was clear Mos Def had no basic knowledge of the issue, so he needed to at least listen rather than try to talk over someone. If he wants to disagree fine, but get some valid arguments first rather than saying "I don't believe you or CNN!"
He put forth the only valid fuckin argument on the show. The other old fat bastards wanted to repeat the same bullshit paranoid delusions that got us into this mess in the first place. Fuck old people, they don't know a god damn thing.
2/2: I spent 24 yrs in the miltary and am well aware of our overseas military presence. Bill's numbers include personnel temporarily deployed.
Yes we have tiny numbers of troops in many, many countries (at embassys, communication stations, etc.), but we really don't have that many large bases left. And here's a news flash; the host countries pay virtually 100% of the costs associated with those bases, and they WANT us there.
So, bringing 'em home won't save much cash at all.
and how do you, an American, have the right to say what THEY want, when YOU aren't THEY
the THEY you speak of is foreign gov'ts, i don't believe all the citizens, of other countries, want to pay to have foreign armed forces in there country
so just stay home and switch from jerkin it to your plasma tv and 24/7 dsl access, in your custom home of course
camron: Well, duh, I guess I can say that THEY (Japan, Germany, England, Korea) want us there because they've signed bi-lateral agreements, agree to pay for the bases, and...as best as I can recall...there have been virtually no public protests agains the bases. Sound reasonable?
If your childish point is that there are SOME people SOMEWHERE that would like our forces to depart, then you're correct. The countries where we've located large bases are almost all democracies. Deal with it.
How would you feel if chinese troops occupied your backyard? Nevermind, I am not gonna even attempt a discussion with some old bat who was conditioned by the military. I'm not even gonna answer anything you say... But I will say only one more thing to you, people like you are the reason we are in the fuckin mess we are.
little: You dumb fuck. Don't you realize there's a difference between an "occupation" (like in Afghanistan), and a "presence of forces" (based on bi-lateral agreements signed between democracies)?
I've forgotten more about the history of our bases overseas than you'll ever know. All you've got is some childish, uninformed "opinion" about the miltary in general...probably based on Maher's rants against the iraq war.
And who gives a fuck if you were in the military, does that give you fuckin carte blanche to throw your fuckin disgusting poisonous violent notions at people? Nevermind, sorry I talked to you the way I did but people like you piss me the fuck off. Have a nice old age!
joe: nothing I've said in any of my posts is the least hateful and the fact that you resort to such accusations just proves you're overly emotional and a fucking liar.
My posts are a dispassionate explanation of why Maher's naive call to "bring all the troops home" is ill advised and uninformed.
You're typical of the Leftist ass-clowns who rant and rave against any opnion/position that differs from their own. You've got some gall to be calling anyone else "ignorant".
People who think the U.S has a right to possess nuclear weapons but other countries have to kindly ask, that is the problem. Obama is not talking about sending troops into Pakistan, and that old war mongering prick Joe Biden is probably the mastermind behind it all. I don't have to be nice to people who think it;s okay to put a countries entire civilian population in jeopardy just to suit some stupid paranoid agenda. Fuck you, I don't have to be nice to you or anyone else who thinks like you!
They're not kindly asking. They deny the desire to produce enriched uranium but clearly demonstrate the desire to use them. Also, giving racist tyrants access to nuclear weapons to use as they wish(detonate, sell parts and technology to Al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups) is not only irresponsible, it would be outright stupid. Learn how to differentiate between Democracies and radical Islamic states with "Supreme leaders" and then you'll understand how it isn't a double standard.
the point is who the fuck are we to be the moral compass of other nations? the only nation to ever use nuclear weapons against anyone else is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! That is not a good precedent t start with setting a fucking example..
bullshit the emperor of japan was about to surrender anyway, the U.S intelligence gathered pointed to this fact. You're just talking out of your politically preprogrammed asshole.
the U.S used the bomb only to show its superiority to the world, to prove it is the new empire in domination of the rest of them. Ever heard of MK ultra? The U.S has no fuckin right to be a moral compass, look at all the people starving and homeless, compared with 'socialist' nations, the united states is a backwards hick nation full of selfish pieces of shit...
actually they did it to show the japanese (who had a severe case of NOT GIVING UP even once their powerful allies were destroyed and all theit fuel supplies had been blockadede) that they would do anything to defeat them
and it worked, only days after nagasaki the emperor surrendered
was it worth it instead of digging in and going for a long campain that probably would have been worse than vietnam? absolutely worth it.
People like you are such full of shit apologists of american political masturbatory shit! Obama is talking about invading pakistan you idiot! The only country that has bases in 200 other nations is the UNITED STATES! How the fuck would you like it if other nations had their troops over here you dumb piece of shit programmed asshole????
Thanks for the ad hominem. Bush indeed was by no means capable of handling Iraq, and was dishonest with the public leading up to the war but in principle taking out a vicious, racist dictator is a good thing. We should be doing the same thing in Sudan with the appalling situation in Darfur, and wherever genocide, slavery, or disciple human rights violations exist. You're over simplifying things way too much and are missing damning details.
Bush was a vicious racist dicator you stupid ass! Did other countries invade the U.S trying to 'take him out'? You talk too casually about life and death, and who the fuck suffers the most when we 'take out' an 'evil dictator'? the innocent civilians of these countries! over a million dead and dislocated in iraq and even germany to this day is not fully together! stop this horse shit and leave other countries the fuck alone before they all get together and attack us! it's not safe assholes!
Perhaps you should reacquaint yourself with the different branches of our government. Bush was at no point a dictator. He was way too incompetent. What is your point about Germany? Should we not have fought the Nazis?
that is what the words were implying though probably not what he had in mind when he said it
but seriously what reason is there to still have bases in germany once the iron cutain fell except to keep total troop numbers high at all times, good reinforcements for when we need em in south western asia
americans should pay the price for everyone elses freedom?
why is this americas burden? why is the taxpayer sending his taxes to the military to police the world? even if we agree on that why is it that americans use blackwater and dyncorp, why do all these corporate cronyist scandals come out of these supposed moral wars? it just seems like the government isnt doing it for the worlds benefit but for their own personal gain
I get tired of Bill's simplistic crap. The reasons the US has an empire of sorts are complicated and it aint as simple as "just coming home".
After WWII there was a power vacuum and we (and the soviets) moved into it. I don't want an empire or the cost and moral ambiguity of maintaining it...but I DO want my beautiful custom home, plasma TV, 24/7 DSL access, etc. etc. etc...and somehow I think my ability to have these things is kinda sorta related to us having an empire.
Shut the fuck up you used up cock sucking military piece of shit. I hate people like you with such a passion, I hope you drown in your own piss puddle. End of discussion...
little: I see now that you're only 18. If I'd realized that I would never have answered any of your posts.
But, since I already responded, I'll respond one final time.
Your collection of posts proves what a spoiled adolescent brat you are. Get this straight you pimple faced femme...you haven't got what it takes to do a tour in the military. That's probably why you're so angry; every time you see the military it reminds you that you're a coward,
I wish we had more fucked up shit-for-brains comedians to tell us how socially ignorant we are. I guess he won't be happy until we join the rest of the world in flushing freedom down the old shitter. It would be funny to see if he could survive as a comedian in a place like Russa or Iran without being put in front of a firing squad. You're a great American Bill!!! Osama loves you!
DustyMay1944...did you even LISTEN to anything he said? You didn't agree with him and you're just saying anything that might get another ignorant person with you on the wagon...please...grow up.
You need another 10 or 15 years to evolve out of your young and dumb phase of life.
Do you really think your intelligence exceeds someone three times your age and with at least 8 years more formal education; someone who has watched people like you be stupefied by political correctness and the idea that it's wrong to fail a kid that can't do simple math?
I've lived through the history you've only read about and I know where the real problem is. It's your generation. Wise-up or loose freedom.
What? Shut up oldie. Move aside, you have no part in this new era of supreme technology. Soon you will not be able to do the most simple things because you couldn't keep up with the developments of the digital world. WE were brought up into that world. We might not be the smartest, but we are the generation where the children teach their parents how to function in this technological age. We will be the pioneers of that world. We will abandon the old system you sustained.
Who the hell do you think developed that technology for you; some teenage wiz kid? NO; me and my generation created all of it. You know how to USE it; DO YOU KNOW HOW TO DESIGN IT? I was designing 2 micron semiconductor technology before you were even born. Were do you think you would be if we had not been so clever? I hope your generation is just as good but I'm getting disappointed as I see more products of this new age education system.
DO YOU KNOW HOW TO PROGRAM IT? Wow it is very unusual that the generation before me was doing things before I was born. I am not blaming you for what you have done. But this generation certainly is not dumb. Even though education failled in most cases, the smart ones will stay smart. I know that today's youth has no respect or interest. But there are plenty that have and are willingly to progress the human kind. We just don't feel much for the old ways of doing it. Like useless politics.
Mos Def came off Most definitely as the ignorant fool that he is. And then resorting to racist accusations when he can't handle the debate. Blind denial is not a valid substitute for rational disagreement or knowledge. This is the result of a culture that celebrates ignorance and shuns education and rationality.
Yeah. It is cool to be someone who is popular and cares more about their appearance and status then education and work. It is somehow cool to be ignorant. If you are into math you are a dork. I even believe that some people study less then they actually want to just to fit in with all the ignoramuses. It is cool now days to drink yourself to death but it is uncool to be dedicated to something that MTV does not promote.
I think you'll find equal numbers in each generation that cannot program even the their DVR or Cell phone; I'm not one of them; I tend to read the manuals when needed or go on the internet for the info. Each generation improves on the one before it; let's hope that continues; indications are that it's about to end.
The wolves are at our door and it's your generation's turn to keep them out before you and all generations that follow you simply become food for the parasites.
And why do you think we are not capeable of doing that? As I see it with people aroudn me and people I meet. They are all waiting for the current generation to move away. Most of us had enough of the regulations and the twisted motives of the goverment. But yeah I sometimes feel down. Cause I think of what george carlin said. Everything is irreducibly fucked. But I have hope in my generation. We will pierce the barrier between reality and sci-fi. if it will help or destroy us all, I don't know.
Do us a favor and go lock yourself in a house for a few more decades. The only way we're going to get any legitimate progress in this country is for the older generation, especially the egocentric baby boomers, to go the way of the dodo.
Do yourself and all your generation a favor and get your head out of your ass. You're being manipulated by politicians and thinking its progress? Do you like seeing your friends in jail for smoking something on the government's list of NO NO's. Both political parties are betraying the people they represent; stop calling that progress. The Obama party is just as bad as the Bush party is and Bill should know that.
DustyMay1944: Right... because the rest of the world is totally fucked because of deregulation and a pointless war which is just now getting straightened out (although i think endeavors in afghanistan at this point are fruitless, and are going to cost the government money we surely dont have), right?
I live in the US, however, I must agree that our "police the world" policy is detrimental to world peace, however, I wouldn't go so far as to say we are worse than Nazi Germany or Stalin.
what is wrong with policing the world?? someone has got to do it!! if we're not there extremists on both sides would escalate and there would be even more death leading us to have to intervene in the end anyway!!! fucking idiot!
What gives us the right to police the world? Did the world appoint us the moral authority and gives us the right to invade whoever we want for what ever we want. Or would you rather our government invade countries for the benefit of themselves and Haliburton. Now who is the fucking idiot? I believe that would be nickloks.
You're missing the point about Iran wanting to USE a nuclear bomb. Do you understand the difference between having nukes with no intention to use them and pretending you don't want nukes but having every intention to use them? And if you don't think we have moral authority over people who want a militant Islamic state for the purpose of returning the world to Islamic control and want us all dead for not believing in their superstition, then you're lost.
Your missing the point that the only reason the current regime is in power in Iran is we got involved back in the 70's because we thought we could police the world, now we are trying to repeat the process which could end up even worse. Oh and if you think Islam is a superstition then so is your precious Christianity they both believe in the same God. Finally, Mos Def is intelligent, he just isn't a good debater.
What is your premise? We propped up Iran in the 1970's therefore they have the right to develop nuclear weapons that will kill Americans? Please explain how we deserve to die by the hands of radical religious nuts for that reason. And: My precious Christianity? I'm not a Christian or a Jew or a Muslim or a (enter superstition).
Proped up Iran my ass, we helped stage a coup of the previous leader, we have fucked up the middle east time and time again, might I remind you we funded Bin Laden. Finally, Iran doesn't have the technology to hit American with a nuclear strike so I won't worry about it.
Are you going to get to your premise or not? So did we deserve 9/11 because we helped the mujaheddin fight off Soviet slaughter in the 80s? So even if we did indeed create these entities as you suggest, they deserve to nuke us? Please explain your premise.
They have neither the technology nor the desire to nuke us. Amedinafuck does not want to nuke us, he is only saying anti-American things to rile up the base. Much like the Republicans are poisoning your mind with nonsense about how we are in constant danger from "the muslims".
lyle: Oh, that's rich. Your premise is that Achmajinidad doesn't "really mean" the things he says. Yeah, just like the legions of jews who once said, "oh, don't worry about that nutty Hitler, he's only saying those crazy things for political purposes".
Here's an idea. LET'S NOT TAKE A CHANCE. Given the potential results of a nuke going off in manhatten I think that's the prudent course of action.
wellhung: Where did I say anything about starting a war with Iran? I'm opposed to invading Iran...even if it means they wind up with nukes.
My irritation on these posts is with fools who seem to think words (of bigoted totalitarian tyrants) are no big deal. Just like the fools who ignored Hitler until it was too late.
And if you want to talk about "finishing blows", wait until a nuke gets detonated in manhatten. The response will make the iraq invasion look like a tea party.
You've payed attention well in High School History regarding the first World Wars. Now go read some peer reviewed articles about how the same international banking families which caused the great depression, backed Hitler with funding, weaponry and technology, own most of our country and are currently causing a global depression. It's funny how the holocaust is always referenced but more recent atrocities like Sudan, Zimbabwe, Darfur and Armania are overlooked, covered up and misrepresented.
Why do conspiracy nuts always insist we "go read" or "go watch" material that hardly even supplements their random claims? How'd you manage access to such exposing and damning evidence? Surely, empirical evidence such as that must have been exposed by some world-renowned journalist! News like this wouldn't simply bounce around the conspiracy theory corners of the internet. Stop trying to hijack the conversation to somehow make Mos and your crazy delusions appear to be intelligent.
dota; uh, I've got a BA and an MBA and have read more books in a year (particularly about WWII) than you've read in your life.
And yeah, prior to WWII there were extensive political, economic and military links between all the western nations...including germany. So fucking what?! Clowns like you trot out these
irrelevant tidbits as though they were some big revelation.
I thought the West learned a lesson about appeasing outspoken racist tyrants until it's too late. I guess not.
lyle: The issue isn't Iran launching nuclear strikes against the US. The old Cold War strategy of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) would apply against Iran just like it applied to the soviets.
The issue is Iran giving (or losing) a nuke to some extremist group who smuggles it into manhattan and detonates it. What would we do then, genius? Could we prove it was an iranian bomb? Could we prove who did it?
Listen to Achmajinidad's public comments and tell me it's OK for him to have nukes.
You people live sad lives worrying about an impending terrorist attack that will never happen, you are confusing countries capabilities with terrorist cells capabilities and forgetting the fact that attacking countries is what causes terrorist cells to attack us in the first place. You want to go on a wild goose chase that costs thousands of American and Middle Eastern lives instead of letting it all cool down and tightening security in our country.
lyle: Uh...last I heard, 9/11 occurred BEFORE Bush's invasions. So...the peaceful kumbaya approach didn't really work, did it?
Nothing in your latest post addresses the fundamental issue of whether or not Iran would give (or lose control of) a nuke to terrorist groups. And if you think we can tighten our borders to the extent we could prevent a single nuke from being smuggled in, you're terribly naive.
The safest course is to prevent radical regimes from getting nukes in the first place.
It's more distinct a possibility that Al-Qaeda carefully planned and executed the attacks. Just because you can no longer argue that Mos Def is smart or actually contributing to the discussion, rather than detracting from it, doesn't mean you can start going off about how 9/11 was an inside job.
First of all omgwtfinsertdickhere fuck you, I could argue about Mos Def being smart for the rest of my life. Secondly, I never said I believed 9/11 was an inside job just that it was a possibility. Thirdly, Fuck You, I would be willing to wager everything I am worth, all $3,500, that Mos Def is more intelligent than you.
Obviously, rap battle is the worst way to measure intelligence because once the rapper is held to his positions by intellectuals, he's exposed for being willfully ignorant and highly emotional. I'm familiar with logic and Mos Def obviously couldn't find his cognitive bearings in the world of debate. He really should stick to rapping and co-signing whatever Mortal Technique says.
lyle: Oh no! Please don't tell me you're a Truther!
You don't get to say that because Bush "benefited" from 9/11 that he caused it. It's like saying you MUST have murdered your father if he leaves you some money in his will.
No, if you want to say Bush caused 9/11 you must PROVE it...and not by cobbling together disparate bits of inexplicable data (like one poster who PROVED Bush did it because one of the attacker's IDs was found in the rubble WITHOUT burn marks on it). lol.
USA is the reason radical Muslims are in power in Iran because we didn't like their democratically elected president's oil policies (their oil.) Even CIA acknowledge this mistake (Blowback). We don't suggest that we should let them have nuke. However, we should learn from our past mistakes and not repeat them somewhere else because of our imperialistic attitude, which might be ok with you but it's MIGHTLY ANNOYING for those who're on receiving end. That's how we create some of these terrorists
excellent anology of foreign policy!!Agree with you 100% I was begining to think that I was the only one who understood this- thanks for postinga an exposing the TRUTH!!
We got involved in Iran in 50s, not 70s, by removing a democratically elected president Mohammed Mosadegh because he nationalized oil.
CIA, under the leadership of Kermit Roosevelt (Grandson of Pres. Roosevelt) Spearheaded the coup to remove Mosadegh and installed Shah as Iranian dictator.
Islamists saw Shah as USA's puppet and took an advantage of his unpopularity to forge the Islamic revolution. Iran WAS a democracy and USA is the reason it's a theocracy today. Talkin' about BLOWBACK!!!!
the annoying thing wasn't that mos def was interjecting, but that he'd get worked up over a tangential comment and completely forget the original discussion. he's obviously not an idiot, came in with some research, but id rather have heard salman and hitch do their thing.
I can't believe the number of unemployed atheists who are flooding YouTube to go off on Mos Def. Did the recession hit you that hard?
He's a smart, funny guy who doesn't resort to condescending remarks to get his point across.
I understand it may be hard for Rushdie to display some form of social ettiquette (what with him hiding in a hole since Khomeini scared the crap out of him), but he & the British toad Hitchens could at least exhibit some class.
The size of the American military base on a tiny island belonging to Portugal is ridiculous. Having their own schools and American shops and restaurants (i.e. Taco Bell and KFC), and making sure they're off-limits to the locals (who knows what those crazy porkchops might do with them to invade EuroDisney). Thanks Bill for pointing this out!
they are there because THEY WANT THEM THERE. it's mutual. the soldiers stimulate the economy, defend them, and are there to mobilize to other regions when needed. you are quite daft, aren't ya.
Christopher Hitchens is a ball of slime without an original thought nor a productive one in his big greasy head. He's a pretender with a facade of intelligence and worldliness so paper thin that only the most accomplished of morons could ever be hoodwinked into thinking he's anything more than the most vapid talking head of today.
HBO/Bill Maher is scared of having an elder spokesman of hiphop like Chuck D or KRS-ONE. Having Mos Def on is strictly to pull a wider demographic without sacrificing the interegrity of the show. Mos Def is an EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT and wordly entertainer, especially compared to his hip hop counterparts....but something tells me Bill wants Mos to throw in the slang and "keep it real" to appeal to the demographic he was brought in to pull in the first place.
True Mos Def is very intelligent and one of my favorite MC's but his debating skills are not that impressive whereas I have seen KRS-One destroy Sean Hannity on his own show even with the ridiculous home field advantage that is Fox News.
Mos Def is apparently no KRS then. I used to think Mos Def was intelligent... now I realize he's just a paranoid conspiracy theorist who thinks only in vast generalizations and cliches. I was very disappointed to see this episode.
What a shame that on a panel which featured true intellectual heavyweights like Salman Rushdie and Christopher Hitchens that we were forced to listen to the incoherent ramblings of a common bum like Mos Def.
Bill, by all means, dedicate an entire panel to incoherent common bums - then you can have Mos Def on again!
I'm still feeding everything Mos Def said through a translating machine and -- hopefully by sometime next week -- I'll know what the hell he was saying.
What a wasted opportunity to have a great, GREAT episode. Overall, I think Bill Mahers show is enjoyable even though Mahers chuckling or interrupting is sometimes enough to turn me away. But booking Mos Def alongside these two guests was a mistake that I hope HBO doesn't bother repeating. Pair him with some cartoonish liberal or conservative and he'll provide some clever, perfectly timed moments. Here he just sounds like a wooden snob from the ghetto.
All current affairs coverage has become more cynical recently, mainly owing to the collapse of the banking system. It's not just Maher. Everyone is pissed.
US corporations extract valuable resource from all over the world. I worked for Freeport in Indonesia on their copper project. Indonesia is a US colony.
When a leader doesn't play along they get whacked.
This is why American Empire is a lot different than previous empires. There's so many layers that most in the world do not realize. The power of money is stronger than the power of standing army.
The guests are civil to each other during the main show, but in Overtime, Hitchens gets riled with Mos over the topic of the Taliban or Al Qaida'a political manifesto (Mos simply asked what are their manifestos, and where can he read them), and it starts to get nasty and insulting. Bill tries to break it up before it comes to blows (fuelled by whiskey, in Hitch's case!)
every troop that serves in the middle east goes through germany and japan before or after.....thats why u idiot! they get trained at treated or have their families there for their on leave.
Ummm my Dad was a diplomat to Iran in the 1970s. Trust me, we had troops & bases in Iran and elsewhere (not to mention Israel) in the 70s. + Lybia and Tunisia at various points., Indeed, we were members of CENTO (The Middle East equivalent of NATO) with several countries. And its all a fucking waste. And I say that after spending 2 years in Iraq. It's a joke.
From my German pov, US presence made part of my education, it's good for our economy etc. Bring them home if you want to, but I think most Germans today would rather keep you guys here.
My cousin worked as civilian for one of the bases, its good money he earned.
I think that should be the question for the US, do you still want to spend the money on that. I'm sure they will keep the hospital there and the airbase forever but the rest might be better deployed somewhere else, Eastern Europe or Middle East.
We don't think of it in terms of either or. We think of it as "both". We'll keep the German bases AND build new ones in Poland then we can take over the whole eastern block. Unless you want Russia to play in your backyard.
Oh come on stop playing geopolitical games. Germany can handle itself. I REFUSE to see us plastered all over the world which noone wants or appreciates. It's a stupid gigantic waste of money.
The idea of "nations" is old. There is no more America the Republic. It is not the American Empire. The "waste" of money you are talking about is just a hype you are led to believe. Everything that you see happening is intended to bring a new global economic rule. Just be thankful that America is in the center of it and not Russia.
he is way off on the deployment issue. they serve many strategic purposes from providing support for front line troops, to being the first line of defense if something happened half way around the world, to protecting our interests/assets. sure they can probably be scaled back, but to bring them all home becomes about a larger issue - that being the abdication of our (perceived) world power. it would create power vacuums across the globe that we would end up having to send troops to anyway.
That allah comment was priceless.

I've forgotten more about the history of our bases overseas than you'll ever know. All you've got is some childish, uninformed "opinion" about the miltary in general...probably based on Maher's rants against the iraq war.

joe: nothing I've said in any of my posts is the least hateful and the fact that you resort to such accusations just proves you're overly emotional and a fucking liar.
JohnR22926 2 years ago
People who think the U.S has a right to possess nuclear weapons but other countries have to kindly ask, that is the problem. Obama is not talking about sending troops into Pakistan, and that old war mongering prick Joe Biden is probably the mastermind behind it all. I don't have to be nice to people who think it;s okay to put a countries entire civilian population in jeopardy just to suit some stupid paranoid agenda. Fuck you, I don't have to be nice to you or anyone else who thinks like you!
LittleEmoBoy001 2 years ago
*Obama is NOW* talking about sending troops into pakistan***
LittleEmoBoy001 2 years ago
They're not kindly asking. They deny the desire to produce enriched uranium but clearly demonstrate the desire to use them. Also, giving racist tyrants access to nuclear weapons to use as they wish(detonate, sell parts and technology to Al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups) is not only irresponsible, it would be outright stupid. Learn how to differentiate between Democracies and radical Islamic states with "Supreme leaders" and then you'll understand how it isn't a double standard.
omgwtfwhoami 2 years ago
the point is who the fuck are we to be the moral compass of other nations? the only nation to ever use nuclear weapons against anyone else is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! That is not a good precedent t start with setting a fucking example..

We used nuclear weapons to end a war. Terrorist nation-states wish to use nuclear weapons to start a war. There is a big difference.

LittleEmoBoy001 2 years ago
actually they did it to show the japanese (who had a severe case of NOT GIVING UP even once their powerful allies were destroyed and all theit fuel supplies had been blockadede) that they would do anything to defeat them
and it worked, only days after nagasaki the emperor surrendered
was it worth it instead of digging in and going for a long campain that probably would have been worse than vietnam? absolutely worth it.

You're over simplifying things way too much and are missing damning details.
omgwtfwhoami 2 years ago
Bush was a vicious racist dicator you stupid ass! Did other countries invade the U.S trying to 'take him out'? You talk too casually about life and death, and who the fuck suffers the most when we 'take out' an 'evil dictator'? the innocent civilians of these countries! over a million dead and dislocated in iraq and even germany to this day is not fully together! stop this horse shit and leave other countries the fuck alone before they all get together and attack us! it's not safe assholes!

DustyMay1944 2 years ago
We will abandon the old system you sustained.
philateliceun 2 years ago
Who the hell do you think developed that technology for you; some teenage wiz kid? NO; me and my generation created all of it. You know how to USE it; DO YOU KNOW HOW TO DESIGN IT? I was designing 2 micron semiconductor technology before you were even born. Were do you think you would be if we had not been so clever? I hope your generation is just as good but I'm getting disappointed as I see more products of this new age education system.
DustyMay1944 2 years ago
DO YOU KNOW HOW TO PROGRAM IT? Wow it is very unusual that the generation before me was doing things before I was born. I am not blaming you for what you have done. But this generation certainly is not dumb. Even though education failled in most cases, the smart ones will stay smart. I know that today's youth has no respect or interest. But there are plenty that have and are willingly to progress the human kind. We just don't feel much for the old ways of doing it. Like useless politics.
philateliceun 2 years ago
Mos Def came off Most definitely as the ignorant fool that he is. And then resorting to racist accusations when he can't handle the debate. Blind denial is not a valid substitute for rational disagreement or knowledge. This is the result of a culture that celebrates ignorance and shuns education and rationality.
joejoeirish 2 years ago
Yeah. It is cool to be someone who is popular and cares more about their appearance and status then education and work. It is somehow cool to be ignorant. If you are into math you are a dork. I even believe that some people study less then they actually want to just to fit in with all the ignoramuses. It is cool now days to drink yourself to death but it is uncool to be dedicated to something that MTV does not promote.
philateliceun 2 years ago
philatelicenun;
DustyMay1944 2 years ago
And why do you think we are not capeable of doing that? As I see it with people aroudn me and people I meet. They are all waiting for the current generation to move away. Most of us had enough of the regulations and the twisted motives of the goverment. But yeah I sometimes feel down. Cause I think of what george carlin said. Everything is irreducibly fucked. But I have hope in my generation. We will pierce the barrier between reality and sci-fi. if it will help or destroy us all, I don't know.
philateliceun 2 years ago
Do us a favor and go lock yourself in a house for a few more decades. The only way we're going to get any legitimate progress in this country is for the older generation, especially the egocentric baby boomers, to go the way of the dodo.

You're missing the point about Iran wanting to USE a nuclear bomb. Do you understand the difference between having nukes with no intention to use them and pretending you don't want nukes but having every intention to use them? And if you don't think we have moral authority over people who want a militant Islamic state for the purpose of returning the world to Islamic control and want us all dead for not believing in their superstition, then you're lost.
omgwtfwhoami 2 years ago
Your missing the point that the only reason the current regime is in power in Iran is we got involved back in the 70's because we thought we could police the world, now we are trying to repeat the process which could end up even worse. Oh and if you think Islam is a superstition then so is your precious Christianity they both believe in the same God. Finally, Mos Def is intelligent, he just isn't a good debater.
lylelammers 2 years ago
What is your premise? We propped up Iran in the 1970's therefore they have the right to develop nuclear weapons that will kill Americans? Please explain how we deserve to die by the hands of radical religious nuts for that reason. And: My precious Christianity? I'm not a Christian or a Jew or a Muslim or a (enter superstition).

omgwtfwhoami 2 years ago
Proped up Iran my ass, we helped stage a coup of the previous leader, we have fucked up the middle east time and time again, might I remind you we funded Bin Laden. Finally, Iran doesn't have the technology to hit American with a nuclear strike so I won't worry about it.
lylelammers 2 years ago
Are you going to get to your premise or not? So did we deserve 9/11 because we helped the mujaheddin fight off Soviet slaughter in the 80s? So even if we did indeed create these entities as you suggest, they deserve to nuke us? Please explain your premise.
omgwtfwhoami 2 years ago
They have neither the technology nor the desire to nuke us. Amedinafuck does not want to nuke us, he is only saying anti-American things to rile up the base. Much like the Republicans are poisoning your mind with nonsense about how we are in constant danger from "the muslims".
lylelammers 2 years ago
lyle: Oh, that's rich.
JohnR22926 2 years ago
And start a 30 year war with Iran? Yeah, in this economy I think that might just be the finishing blow the US needs.
welhungjohnson 2 years ago
wellhung: Where did I say anything about starting a war with Iran? I'm opposed to invading Iran...even if it means they wind up with nukes.
My irritation on these posts is with fools who seem to think words (of bigoted totalitarian tyrants) are no big deal. Just like the fools who ignored Hitler until it was too late.
And if you want to talk about "finishing blows", wait until a nuke gets detonated in manhatten. The response will make the iraq invasion look like a tea party.
JohnR22926 2 years ago
You've payed attention well in High School History regarding the first World Wars. Now go read some peer reviewed articles about how the same international banking families which caused the great depression, backed Hitler with funding, weaponry and technology, own most of our country and are currently causing a global depression. It's funny how the holocaust is always referenced but more recent atrocities like Sudan, Zimbabwe, Darfur and Armania are overlooked, covered up and misrepresented.
DotaClips 2 years ago
Why do conspiracy nuts always insist we "go read" or "go watch" material that hardly even supplements their random claims? How'd you manage access to such exposing and damning evidence? lyle: The issue isn't Iran launching nuclear strikes against the US.
JohnR22926 2 years ago
You people live sad lives worrying about an impending terrorist attack that will never happen, you are confusing countries capabilities with terrorist cells capabilities and forgetting the fact that attacking countries is what causes terrorist cells to attack us in the first place. You want to go on a wild goose chase that costs thousands of American and Middle Eastern lives instead of letting it all cool down and tightening security in our country.
lylelammers 2 years ago
lyle: Uh...last I heard, 9/11 occurred BEFORE Bush's invasions.
JohnR22926 2 years ago
Uh last I heard its a distict possibility that 9/11 was a conspiracy because of who gained what as a result of the attacks.
lylelammers 2 years ago
It's more distinct a possibility that Al-Qaeda carefully planned and executed the attacks. Just because you can no longer argue that Mos Def is smart or actually contributing to the discussion, rather than detracting from it, doesn't mean you can start going off about how 9/11 was an inside job.
omgwtfwhoami 2 years ago
First of all omgwtfinsertdickhere fuck you, I could argue about Mos Def being smart for the rest of my life. Secondly, I never said I believed 9/11 was an inside job just that it was a possibility. Obviously, rap battle is the worst way to measure intelligence because once the rapper is held to his positions by intellectuals, he's exposed for being willfully ignorant and highly emotional.

HBO/Bill Maher is scared of having an elder spokesman of hiphop like Chuck D or KRS-ONE. Having Mos Def on is strictly to pull a wider demographic without sacrificing the interegrity of the show. Mos Def is an EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT and wordly entertainer, especially compared to his hip hop counterparts....but something tells me Bill wants Mos to throw in the slang and "keep it real" to appeal to the demographic he was brought in to pull in the first place.
maldonadojustin 2 years ago 2
True Mos Def is very intelligent and one of my favorite MC's but his debating skills are not that impressive whereas I have seen KRS-One destroy Sean Hannity on his own show even with the ridiculous home field advantage that is Fox News.
lylelammers 2 years ago
Mos Def is apparently no KRS then. I used to think Mos Def was intelligent... now I realize he's just a paranoid conspiracy theorist who thinks only in vast generalizations and cliches. I was very disappointed to see this episode.

What a shame that on a panel which featured true intellectual heavyweights like Salman Rushdie and Christopher Hitchens that we were forced to listen to the incoherent ramblings of a common bum like Mos Def.
Bill, by all means, dedicate an entire panel to incoherent common bums - then you can have Mos Def on again!

How ironic and unfortunate.

Thank "Goth" we don`t have American bases in Sweden! We hate your guns and warloving Jesus freaks !
But we got more than 100.000 Iraqi refugees in a country of 9.million .
Its so full they are now trying to live in Finland!
Do You hear that on your NEWS ????
2007 US & UK had only 700 Iraqi Refugees each!!!!!
90 % of Sweden was against USA invading Iraq!
30 % was against it in USA!
What do You think is goin to happened when USA pulls out of Iraq ???
I know, do you?
MissMelodia 2 years ago 3
Thank Goth? Haha, that's EXCELLENT, do you mind if I still it?
Wow, I had no idea, I'm going to fact check it, that's mind blowing.
P.S: I'm Canadian, hate guns & I'm Agnostic, just sayin'...

I'm sick of this ignorant mentality. Sweden isn't the utopia you make it out to be; therefore you should get out of your ideological bubble.
Gun control is retarded, try to challenge me on this point.

Sweden is facing riots from Muslim dominated cities. Do some google searching and you will see that demographics is destiny. Read America Alone.

Mos Def sounds retarded.
Bill Maher is getting more and more cynical and mean spirited with his jokes.
I still like the show but his recent anti-American complex jokes are a bit harsh.
whitecollarcriminal 2 years ago
All current affairs coverage has become more cynical recently, mainly owing to the collapse of the banking system. It's not just Maher. Everyone is pissed.

I love this show but I'm not liking the panels lately.
mongchau9 2 years ago
Yeah me neither. And Bill is getting alittle nastier than usual and losing his sense of humor. I didnt care for the British guy on the right either.

The USA is an empire of corporations.
US corporations extract valuable resource from all over the world. I worked for Freeport in Indonesia on their copper project. Indonesia is a US colony.
When a leader doesn't play along they get whacked.
dogpoke 2 years ago
This is why American Empire is a lot different than previous empires. There's so many layers that most in the world do not realize. The power of money is stronger than the power of standing army.
leoca 2 years ago
Great point. Bring the stupid troops home from Germany at least if not Japan & S. Korea. noone WANTS US THERE. It's ridiculous.

Check out the Overtime at HBO's site!

JeffBeck13 2 years ago
Really, you idiot? The U.S. didn't have troops in the Middle East before the '80s.
auh786 2 years ago
Bill was referring to the current US empire. so my answer related to the situation as it stand now.
JeffBeck13 2 years ago
Ummm my Dad was a diplomat to Iran in the 1970s. Trust me, we had troops & bases in Iran and elsewhere (not to mention Israel) in the 70s. + Lybia and Tunisia at various points., Indeed, we were members of CENTO (The Middle East equivalent of NATO) with several countries. And its all a fucking waste. And I say that after spending 2 years in Iraq. It's a joke.

Don't forget about the dictators the CIA installed all over the place.

Totally off on the critic of US presence in Germany and Japan.
leoca 2 years ago
From my German pov, US presence made part of my education, it's good for our economy etc. Bring them home if you want to, but I think most Germans today would rather keep you guys here.
blackwolf1272 2 years ago
500,000 troops, 700 bases was it? Thats insane. Do the math. There's your healthcare and education system right there.
What do they do all day over there?
AceOfSpade1234 2 years ago 2
150 bases but still.
forestskog 2 years ago
We made a commitment to the Germans. It is both beneficial to our countries.
leoca 2 years ago
My cousin worked as civilian for one of the bases, its good money he earned.
I think that should be the question for the US, do you still want to spend the money on that. I'm sure they will keep the hospital there and the airbase forever but the rest might be better deployed somewhere else, Eastern Europe or Middle East.
YildrimYohyo 2 years ago
Yes, the money is worth it.
leoca 2 years ago
Why?
YildrimYohyo 2 years ago
NATO
German is a strong ally.
We don't think of it in terms of either or. We think of it as "both". We'll keep the German bases AND build new ones in Poland then we can take over the whole eastern block. Unless you want Russia to play in your backyard.
leoca 2 years ago
Oh come on stop playing geopolitical games. Germany can handle itself. I REFUSE to see us plastered all over the world which noone wants or appreciates. It's a stupid gigantic waste of money.
forestskog 2 years ago 3
The idea of "nations" is old. There is no more America the Republic. It is not the American Empire. The "waste" of money you are talking about is just a hype you are led to believe. Everything that you see happening is intended to bring a new global economic rule. Just be thankful that America is in the center of it and not Russia.
leoca 2 years ago
NATO...Russia....uhhh....The Cold War ended back in the 90's, can we please get to the 21st century.
bobjman 2 years ago
NATO is not just for Russia anymore.
leoca 2 years ago
FUCK, Mos Def wasted this show. Never invite this moron again.
leoca 2 years ago 15
Yes leoca, I say the same thing when Gary Shadling & Martin Short is on the show too. Don't invite them on an important show like this one.
blachubear 2 years ago
he is way off on the deployment issue. they serve many strategic purposes from providing support for front line troops, to being the first line of defense if something happened half way around the world, to protecting our interests/assets. sure they can probably be scaled back, but to bring them all home becomes about a larger issue - that being the abdication of our (perceived) world power. it would create power vacuums across the globe that we would end up having to send troops to anyway.
