Very gifted manager, shame he ended up being used as a puppet by them 2 yanks, When he first came he brought some players knowing some would fail and some would be a success, it was trial end error, it was his first time in the Prem. Alonso, Torres, Reina, Agger, Kuyt, Mascherano, Lucas, Skrtel, Johnson plus some very good youngsters who are ready to break into the first team. He was very good a tactics, He would do very well under the current owners
with thje small budget per player he bought shit, when given big he got class players , i remeber him nearly signin villa for liverpool but we wouldnt spend more than 20 mil on him (back in the days when spending that much was like spending 50 million on kaka) i was gutted torres alonso villa gerrard masch carra agger skrtel reina class throughout right to the subs
@lfc4ever7 Why would he accept either of those positions? Once a job at a top end Spanish team (outside of Barca and Madrid) comes up, he's practically in after what he did for Valencia.
@thatsgoodsquishie ...And how good is your Spanish senor? Brits like YOU can't speak your own language properly let alone another! LAZY or IGNORANT...or just both?
he did well with the poor squad he had, selling Alonso was his downfall, and apart from Reina, Carragher, Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard and Torres Liverpool had no top quality players under Rafa
It was a funny retort but it was a fair question- does Cahill need extra attention when you are confronted with high balls that he can get to? Obviously yes, because if you are going to try and ensure he does not get the goal, you have to stay on him. Tim Cahill who has to outjump a manmarker when receiving the ball has to work a lot harder than Tim Cahill who has no competition.
@lucainno Journalist: Don't u think it's important to man mark someone like Cahill who can get up so high for crosses...Rafa: (to sum up) The guy will still score as he did in his last goal against Wigan when he was also being manmarked.
WIth man to man if someone outmuscles you or leaps higher to head the ball you just hold your hand up and say it was a good effort.
With Zonal you're standing there ready to attack the ball if it come into your Zone but before you have a chance to jump someone already got the run into the box and leaped higher so its basically a free header.
What Rafa's saying here isequivalent of saying, "we've won 5 games this season with Gerrard and 5 games without so I'll just him out the team next game".
Brian Reade, famous Liverpool fan, columnist and author, believes that there was an agenda against Benítez from the start, saying "His face didn't fit"
Rafa's a decent manager but unless you want to go back to just nearly winning trophies, he's not the answer. I get that anything seems better than this season's clusterfuck, but that's like trading a kick in the dick for a punch in the face. Wouldn't you rather have something that doesn't hurt, rather than the lesser of two evils?
He was shit?! No chance! He had one bad season. Fact. But yeh, it would probably be foolish to bring him back, as would bringing back Kenny IMO. We gotta look forward. Should bring in Marcelo Bielsa, till end of the season at least. Would love to see his attacking, enjoyable football at Anfield...
@thebaron89 woah chill out there rafa wasnt a great manager, technically he was shit but because he's better than hodgeson everyone thinks hes great now, how great is it that hes already been sacked
Even if rafa won nothing at anfield he'd still be a legend.. Why? Because just before he left he handed the hillsborough families 96,000 pound.. Which could and will go along way towards justice for the 96.. Which any TRUE red will see as being wayyy more important than any silverware!
I'd happily trade in our 18 titles and 5 European cups for justice, duno about anyone else but there's no doubt in my mind what the main priority here is
@liverpoolcrazie yeah, your right he was a top man and he did a fantasic job, just imagine what he could have done if we had some decent owners who shared the same passion as he did.........totally agree about the silverware, its about time that REAL action was taken Y N W A
class act rafa, was behind him 100%. the knobhead boo boys or fat spanish waiter ignoramus' that called him expected that tit mourinho or hiddink aught to be ashamed. we have lost a european cup winniing manager who had the yanks on the ropes
I can't understand why Liverpool fans laud this man and regard his tenure as a success. Okay, he won the champions league, fantastic achievement, but other than that he has been a failure. Bought terribly, made ridiculous decisions on and off field, and failed to build a title challenging team (even the year they finished second they weren't much of a side). The thing is, without Torres or Gerrard, Liverpool are usless.
@shams0001 The year we finished second we weren't much of a side.. then why did we score the most goals and nearly keep the most clean sheets? How did Dirk Kuyt manage to score the same amount of goals as Rooney and Lampard if we're just a two man team?
And his tactics were bad weren't they.. so bad he got us to two champions league finals in six years, as well as reaching numerous quarters and semis.
Beating Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter, Arsenal, Milan... thrashings to Madrid and Utd.
@ElectronicAnthem Okay, he managed some really good results, fair play, but Liverpool fans seem to cloud the fact that he's also had many (too many) rubbish results and bad decisions. I just think Liverpool fans blindly worshipped him even though he didn't do a very good job. It all comes down to trophies, and in six years one Champions league and an FA cup, isn't enough. The last trophy he won was the 2006 community shield. How on earth did he manage another four years there?! It's beyond me.
@ElectronicAnthem Oh and the whole Gerard/Torres thing. If you were an honest Liverpool fan (like many of my friends are) you would acknowledge the fact that without Torres and Gerard you would struggle to finish top six. Some Liverpool fans I know reckon that if you had to sell them both you would only be a mid-table team. There are so many bad players (brought in by Benitez) in that squad. I feel sorry for Liverpool fans, being subjected to so many bad buys, bad decisions, bad football.
@shams0001 Ok, Rafa is not the best in the transfer market. I won't dispute that. In Spain they operate clubs differently and the manager does not do the buying for the most part, so he had little experience of that when he entered England. I wouldn't call his record disastrous, but only a certain type of player - hardworking, head down, tactical awareness at all times, professional, unemotional - excels under him. His players are pawns to him, and that reflects his philosophy as a manager.
@shams0001 Well, they were without Torres/Gerrard last season for the most so finishing 7th, that's pretty acurate. Then again, Gerrard was none existent for the majority of the season, he was awful by his standards, with Liverpool's most influencial player (Bar Torres when he was fit) was Pepe Reina, easily the best goalkeeper in the EPL.
Problem with Liverpool was Rafa playing his favorites rather then people who could make a difference. Lucas and N'Gog for example, both horrible players.
@BassistRT Exactly and that cost him his job in the end imo. Specially putting on Lucas (lead to questioning in regards to the exact relationship between the pair) instead of Aquilani (after he was fit) because when Aquilani did get his chances towards the end of the season, he made a massive difference to the team. Ngog don't get me started, Kristian Nemeth should be in the team, Ngog and Lucas should be sent back to where they came from in a crate, seeing we won't get anything for them anyway
@anil2 I don't need to, I have not made a claim. It is up to you to prove your claim correct. I am simply going with the referee's decision.
And besides, if it wasn't a goal then Cech would have been red carded for bringing Baros down. Down to ten men and facing a penalty, or going down one-nil? Which would you rather it was?
@anil2 You don't get to play on from a penalty unless the ball is in the net. There is absolutely no point in playing on in a situation warranting a penalty UNLESS the player scores.
The ref gave it as a goal, so it is still up to you to prove it did not cross the line, and this is the second time you've avoided answering me on that. You can't just keep repeating that it wasn't a goal. The ref said he wouldn't of sent Cech off? Fine, where did he say that? Give me the exact quotes and source.
