But keep in mind, this film had MUCH more substance than the TV show (which was the only other screen version of Batman, and the only thing most people were comparing it to at the time.) I find this Joker surprisingly deep and terrifying, something audiences in 89 weren't expecting. The Nolan movies were almost too much "substance" (by "substance" I mean comic book heroes and villians awkwardly philosophizing for too long just when you're expecting to see some action)
@zachmasterzach I agree Batman 1989 was a triumph at the time and in comparison to the 60s Batman I guess it blew people away, its kinda what got me into Batman and the comics my Frankmiller, Alan Moore etc I don't think the Nolan films are perfect but they do hold a lot more weight I think and are more for an adult audience, Batman is a complex character, although these complexities are touched upon in the 1989 version, I don't think the depth of the mythos is truly explored.
@zachmasterzach There’s a big thing over the Joker character in Batman and TDK I know
To be honest I think its stupid, No one can say that Heath Ledgers performance was bad, people argue that he wasn’t the Joker, in my eyes he was, just a slightly more sadistic version, the complexity of that character is what made him so mesmerising to watch, no Joker is gonna be exactly like the comic books, Nicholsons wasn’t
Cos actors bring their own creative interpretation to the role.
@zachmasterzach Nicholsons performance was good although it was not flawless but I think this is down to the direction. To be honest Burton is not a brilliant director.
He has some gems like BeetleJuice, Edward Scissorhands but then you get Planet of the Apes, Mars attacks, Bigfish. I mean how contrived is Planet of the Apes.
I think Batman 1989 is good but it has not aged well, in 50-100 years time people will appreciate the Nolan films more.
@electricEntity81 I do agree that Batman '89 hasn't aged very well-- special effects seem dated, there is some truly sloppy editing and revealing bloopers, it has the feeling of being an 80's film (especially the random Prince songs they threw in to promote the "Batman" soundtrack, which in and of itself was a mistake.) But ironically, it remains one of Burton's most realistic films. I'm sure this was probably due to pressure from the studio to create an accessible blockbuster
I feel like, had Burton been given the level of creative control that Nolan has (as well as a presumption that he was making a trilogy as opposed to one open-and-closed Batman film), we would have gotten a better film. I think Burton is a great director, everyone who has been in the biz as long as him will have a few duds. I do like the Nolan films though I wonder if either version will actually be remembered beyond Batman fans.
Both Jokers are great, not knocking either, but I bring him up because, unlike Nolan's film, the '89 Joker is the centerpiece of the film. Audiences weren't expecting to see so much of him, to find out so much about such a sadistic, seemingly unlovable character. But by the end it's hard not to like him. It's even darker, too, because he's not wearing facepaint, that's just what Batman did to him (yeah kinda hard to suspend disbelief there, but it's a creepy concept)
@zachmasterzach You know, I heard it was passed around a number of directors before they gave it to Burton, that following the success of Superman they wanted to follow up with a Batman film but couldn’t find a suitable director. This went on for like 10 years. I heard some scary stories like Michael Jackson was gonna do the music, it was gonna have Robin in it, Bill Murry was gonna play Batman, David Bowie wanted to play the Joker.
@zachmasterzach Eventually after the success of Beetlejuice they gave it to Burton (thank god)
Yeah he did a good job, I heard that he had read TDKR by Frank Miller and that’s where he got his inspiration for a darker Batman.
Theres no doubting that Nolan was also influenced by what Burton did I mean the Bat suits are practically the same and there are also similarities in his scripts, the Joker and Batman face–off for e.g.
@zachmasterzach I liked the idea of the Joker not wearing make-up, that Batman made him that way, yeah it definitely works and like you say makes him a scarier character.
I also like the way that Heath Ledgers character has no origin, the way Nolan totally flipped that around. Not having a back story for that character makes him all the more intriguing as your imagination fills in the blanks, you start to think where did this guy come from and how did he become the way he is.

@zachmasterzach To be honest I don’t get all the controversy between the Burton and Nolan fans, I think both film franchises have their good and bad points. I think Returns is a little over the top but I loved it when it first came out. I miss the fantasy elements in the Nolan films, the old Gotham city was awesome, although I can understand what Nolans doing, making it more of a real life crime drama and I like it.
@zachmasterzach The third instalment looks awesome, just awesome, I can’t wait for it to come out. I think we agree on most points and its good to find someone else who is on the fence and not just another Nolan hater.
Just out of interest, whats your take on the Schumacher films?
@electricEntity81 lol, not sure what else can be said about them, neither are great movies but both get way too much hate. I guess cuz Schumacher "gay'd up" Batman apparently, but idk. Joel said he wanted to entertain ppl, and seeing how I was an adolescent when both films came out, he reached his goal as far as I was concerned. I remember my parents loving Batman Forever because it was more like the TV show (which they grew up on) so if the TV show was what JS had in mind,
@zachmasterzach then he achieved his goal. Thinking about them now, I hope someone one day gives the "serious treatment" to the Riddler, Poison Ivy, and Mr. Freeze on film (Nolan handled Two-Face well, though I thought his moment in TDK ended way too quickly.) They are all intriguing villains, I especially consider the Riddler to be one of the most important Batman villains, shame the only representation we have of him is Jim Carrey. And yes, I think TDKR will be awesome.
@zachmasterzach I agree that the first JS film was good when it came out, I liked the transition from Burtons more gothic vision to JS’ more colourful, comic book adaption, however I watch it now and just cringe at every stage. Val Kilmer was a terrible Batman, Tommy Lee Jones just tries to be a Batman villain form the 60s series and fails miserably, Nicole Kidman is just corny and irritating.

@zachmasterzach I heard the reason that Nolan didn’t do the Riddler in the third film is because he is too similar a character to the Joker, and he didn’t want to follow up with something similar to that character but not quite as good, wise choice in my opinion.
I think Jim Carrey will always be the best Riddler, unless they really changed the character as they did the Joker.
@zachmasterzach I agree two-face shouldn’t have been killed off, that was a disappointment in TDK
Having said that I’ve heard that Batman will be killed off in the next film to end the trilogy! Could be good, could ruin the films entirely, who knows.
I would like to see the Penguin in the Nolan films, if you’ve read the graphic novel JOKER by Brian Azzarello, the Penguin gets the serious treatment and it actually works quite well.

awesome trailer, I saw this trailer on the cinema back in 1989 when I went to see the last crusade, still seems as fresh now as it did back then, shame the actual film has not aged so well ):
keaton's batman is way better than bale's. whats with the voice bale puts on when he is in the bat suit? you can tell its him lol and george clooney and val kilmer bahahahahahahahahaha i dont even classify batman forever or batman and robin as batman movies, i class them as long fag jokes lol
@LordGateau87 lol George Clooney was the worst. He was pretty much George Clooney playing George Clooney dressed up as batman. He is one of the worst actors that I person think is out there. Much like Jack and Freeman he plays himself.. but unlike those two he isn't interesting.
I do love the 89 batman but man the reporter guy really gets on my nerves in it (knotts, right?) Val wasn't too bad. I admit Batman Forever was much better when I saw it in the theater when I was 15/16 compared to now
I remember that my mom bought me that movie on VHS and I used to watch it almost every night. Years ago those 'special effect' always kept me chilled. Not it's kinda laughable. A classic, nevertheless.
We are doing a stop motion animation film called Tim. The movie is a stop motion animation film that is dedicated to Tim Burton and has Sir Christopher Lee as the narrator. Search the directors name Brian Joseph Ochab to find the video.
This trailer marked the first time fanboys would pay to go see a movie just because it had this "Batman" trailer. They would see the trailer, then walk out of the movie and pay again for the next showing.
Thank God, Someone Else Agrees With Me. Bale Is Beyond Overrated As The Dark Knight.. Great Movies, But It's The Supporting Cast That Make Them Good. I.E. Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Heath Ledger, And Aaron Eckhardt. I Hate Hearing Bale's Smoker Cough Voice. It's Not Intimidating At All. It's Just Irritating As Hell.
@sanjacraven36 how could anybody call that crap a movie tho
a series of misinterpretation of the original batman is more like it
this guy is so excited he chooses every current social calamity to bring into the film. new york police, 911, terrorism, then while ur at it war in iraq, id chip nwo ...
@ActionPackedCinema My biggest problem with Keaton (in fact with Burton) is why the heck he didn't get 6 months of pupping up and high protein intake to bulk up a bit?. Batman has to show all those years of training. Also Bob Kane's Batman is 6'2'' tall, and Keaton is kinda short, but definitely a good actor.
