Light didnt kill L, he had Rem do it...and Rem only did it because he loved Misa..and basically that was like the only way for Light to love Misa...also Rem did it so that Misa would be happy. But Light dies so you should be happy.

L dies in chapter 58 I believe it was, and at first I hated L cuz Light/Raito was my favorite character, then L died and it wasn't the same, and also I hated Near and Mello with a passion. I thought if Light/Raito were gunna be caught, it shoulda been at least by L not these little punks, but alas the series ends with Near winning, but yeh, I used to hate L and actually ended up missing him in the end.

That's too cliche. I like the new twists they had in the protagonists. I think Near and Mello were pretty cool characters as well. The manga explains that Near like L's composure while Mello is L's dynamics.

But I think the reason L died is to symbolize that on the surface, even the best soicety has to offer is not match for personal inner-ambition.  But they go on to show how teamwork in the end can accomplish anything.

erm... teamwork? i think it goes deeper than that. it broke my heart, but i think L had to die... he made the ultimate sacrifice and found out the truth after a long struggle. its interesting how L was so brave and unafraid to die, while light was such a coward at the end... they're such complete opposites. i got a lot of satisfaction from the ending... somewhere, L is smiling. Justice will prevail!
