I'm not the best authority on the historical use of flux for forge welding.
Flux keeps air away from the area to be welded which enables the steel to come to up a welding temperature before the metal burns up.
It also allows scale to liquify and be squirted out when the pieces are joined together.
I work with mild steel and the welding temp is approx 2300 degrees.
I've read that flux isn't needed to make a forge-weld but have never tried it.

Beautiful work! What did blacksmiths use before they had borax?

Sorry that I missed your posts. Not sure what happened.
@weldermaniac: Never knew that would work with icing sugar.
I also use EZ Weld for certain things and sprinkle some borax over the whole piece to be welded and it works well that way.
@comicfan21: Thanks for the kind words. I plan on making more vids but where does the time go... LOL

you should post more vids, you're very good and the quality of the video makes it very informative on your technique

Got some of that borax here.. Use it and icing sugar to get rid of ants... I always wondered about the flux.. I have used a dry flux out of a can to weld cast iron.. don't think it is borax thou.. Thanks for the info.
