The advent of synthesizers and drum machines changed all that towards the end of the 80's when record companies decided they didn't need to pay for musicians cause they could just use machines, and that contributed to the fall of R&B. Many of todays R&B producers are merely talented beatmakers. The songs lack craft. The arrangements lack craft and musicianship. The craft is just not there.
