Ok, a little advice on this one... your timing IS off a tad. However, I'm thinking its because your only using downstrokes with your pick and are rushing to try and keep up in your head. Start using upstrokes on chords and you'll find its easier to keep up with songs like this one. It'll also add some dimension to the overall sound of the chords.

Why would he use a death metal pedal for alt rock? Flyleafs overdrive is just a driven amp. Most Death Metal pedals I've tried have sounded shit anyway.
