@Bobbalou23 Sorry, but you are incorrect on that one. You can google it if you don't believe me. In some earlier versions it was "flourish," but some song writer apparantly thought that was too effeminate (just my guess) and changed it to "flunder." Problem is, I can't find any reference to that word in ANY language, except in the lyrics to this here song! Poetic license, I guess. I was really joking with the question. "Plunder" doesn't honestly fit either.
A "Flunder" (german = engl: flounder) is a fish, which is lying flat on the oceans ground. If it moves, the sand "blows up(?)" like the water, if a wale strikes down his tail..
Thats the only thing comming to my mind.
Also, "Flunder" is used on most lyrics pages. Sometimes even "flounder"
Very nice, wonderful song recorded by Judy Collins and Theo Bikel at the Newport Folk Festival, maybe during July 1964, I'm not sure, but on the record she sings "blowin' in the wind" and presents "the wind" like a Dylan's song of the past year.

Robokit wrote "...I just love it that whale escaped." What kind of lowlife would be happy that for men were drowned, but the whale is safe,

Great version--"straight"--of this. There's a really fun one done by the LImeliters on their "Through Children's Eyes" album that is a hoot.
Never thought of Theodore Bikel as a folk singer....

I have just one question. What the heck is a "flunder" and how does a whale make one with his tail??

Wish these two would make a CD together today.

Always thought this is one of my favorite Collins performances. And Bikel does a great "evil" captain.

Always loved this version from the Folk Music Festival with Theo and Judy. Another great one is the "fisherman song" by Judy.
