Horowitz creaun unique atmosphere, seems to be hell, there's a palpable intention, anxiety, is awesome, it creates a full orchestra, the final part puts the creeps
He plays is with complete abandon-not caring about notes, technique, critics-just conveying the message to the audience. True, only Horowitz could 'get away' with this performance but what a privilege to be able to throw prudence into the wind and play with the true bravura which defines a true artist!
the ferocity of this recording is absolutely incredible! I can't believe he was in his seventies!!! The best rendition of this piece I have ever heard
i don't really understand why this is that good, and i even think that he should not have arranged like this, because it surely might not be worse than the original, but it seems not better, either. Well, it seems...he was too old to play this piece, as this should be something enthusiastic shared among younger people...i mean, his play was too sophisticated to fascinate a young man, sexually.
I just heard the orchestral version of this work...... (Vienna Philharmonic 2011 New Year's concert.) And now I realize why Horowitz did what he did....... He inserted parts that were present in the orchestral version of the work, but were absent from the standard piano version. It may have been Horowitz's vision of what Liszt intended.
la cadenza finale è grossolana...Horowitz, specie da vecchio, tendeva all'impiego di effetti per 'épater le bourgeois...ma talvolta è molto rumore per nulla...
coarse final cadence...Horowitz, especially in old age, tends to use effects to 'épater le bourgeois'...but sometimes is much ado about nothing...
Well, he significantly "beefs up" the already powerful ending -- and it WORKS -- but only because he was who he was -- a poet of the piano with grand Byronic visions that take the listener right to the edge of the Abyss.
I love too the way he -- at age 76 -- takes the famous leaps a bit more slowly than the Young Turks but punctuates them with terrifyingly heavy chordal utterances. It WORKS!
The best thing, however, is the seductive lyricism in the quietly brilliant passages.
There is something so confusing about art in which people who have not been on a journey criticize a final destination as if all who have arrived have misconstrued.
He was 74 when he recorded this?!?

@chiron1219 I don't understand that. Isn't it the sexual energy of his PLAYING that counts? Which is a magnitude x10000 any 18-year-old!

@liedersanger1 Mephisto Waltz is all sex. He just played the way it was meant to be.

Tecnicamente, si sentono gli anni che aveva ormai. Musicalmente, però, lo trovo più che apprezzabile.

A technique incredibly diabolic: Mephisto Waltz. A great name.

It's a real magician of rubato, i'm learning this piece, and the final part played by Horowitz it's fantastic, he had perfect technic. RIP

Jeez, what an overblown performance! Especially the ending... Wow, you can really do a trill, can't you, Volodya? Can you also juggle?
