  • the sound is just awesome i wish i was rich enough to get one :/

  • I thought it was gonna sound better.

  • @Gixxer983 wow dude, get a new pair of ears from the doctor.

  • He's playing a Stradivarius in front of a Yamaha piano lol

  • i didn"t know Alan Rickman played the violin.

  • You'd need to pay more for 5 seconds

  • I'd pay million bucks for that

  • It would have made this the best if he dropped the violin ahahha

  • Genius

  • its professor snape!!

  • Comment removed

  • @pilotguitar21 Something owns Professor Snape?

  • It sounds quite nice. Although it doesn't quite sound any better than any other top notch playing I've heard.

I mean, maybe I'm not there in person and acoustics play a big role. But really, why pay so much for a violin? Any would do and it does not matter if it is collectible, so long as you can play well.

Bleh, I'm tired and rambling. Either way, nice performance.

  • @JHaru777

Violins increase in performance up to about $10,000. After that, you don't get much improvement for paying more, it's the "Collector value".

However, Strads do have some great characteristics. You most likely do not play violin, as you would understand some of these characteristics.

  • @KittyRokher Huh. But yeah, I've never played. Always wanted to though.

  • FAAAAKE not a real stradi

  • @lobitas3399

What do you base this off of, dickhead?

  • @KittyRokher FIRST i would like to be not called a dickhead thank you. SECOND based on NOTHING

  • @KittyRokher THIS is a real stradi /watch?v=70EvLqYvJks paste this behind your youtube .com abd do watch that before you go cthulu on me

  • i feel like im listening to a whole symphony orchestra

  • They should have him stand on bubble wrap

  • One sold for 15.9 million Euro the other week. So errr... I'd probably be too afraid to even watch this performance, let alone play the darn thing.

  • 3 MILLONES Y MAS Xd

  • I'd like to hear both Bach's & antonio's comments :):):)

  • He's terrified he's going to break it. "OH FUCK this thing is worth more than I am!" I don't blame him one bit.

  • Awesome playing. Love your up bow spicatto

  • in loveee with this!!!

  • wow.. that sounds like amazing!

  • hw m i listening to more than 1 violin

  • This guy came to my school last year and showed us that very violin! it was beautiful :)

  • As they say you need a piece of art (the Stradivari Violin) to make art (Music).

  • spectacular

  • for a 2 minute crap, i practiced 5 hours for my solo and ensemble.

  • How am I not listening to several violins at once? This is incredible.

  • @DonZabu Double-stops? Pardon my ignorance; I'm a guitarist.

  • @Digitbig Just a chord on the violin. I believe they're called that because you have to break larger chords into 2 bow strokes (i.e the first one or two strings and then the last two strings with the majority of the bow). Double stops.

  • @Digitbig Double stops, triple stops, and quadruple stops are just terms for chords on the violin. Doubles stops= two note chords. Triple stops= three note chords. And Quadruple stops are four note chords. The name has nothing to do with the bow technique used to play large chords.

  • l'd faint big time to see it closely and listen to it... jesus christ

  • This is really beautiful: the harmonic overlays at 5:45 -6:15 or so are really executed so well perhaps only on Strad class instruments. Richer harmonics at lower AND higher registers... very few instruments could / would resonate so colorfully: the air itself takes the strings' oscillations and resonates out the harmonics themselves in signature Strad fashion.Nothing can touch the elegance here.I am perhaps a purist but I know beauty and am inspired when I see and hear or perceive it.

  • Beautiful!!!

  • Whos this? and what is he doin in the beginning? neck-exercises?

  • @PinkasC Can't you read the title before asking this?...

  • @TehStupidBish I did?! Maybe i didn't think about the first question... Eric Grossman, but the other questions!

  • man the quality, density, brilliance of the strad is simply out of this world!! i have a copy of a strad but i seriously would love to hear one played live!! outstanding fabulous instrument and most definitely a tone incomparable!!

  • play the song from titanic please

  • @Hteam1422

    lol ;D

  • @Dualz101

It isn't Stradivarius, but have you ever played an Ivon Dunov violin? Beautiful tone.

  • @lbrown21494 he's playing a stadivarius violion, what do you mean it isn't stradivarius?

  • i love the sound of strads work...hmmm.. i wish violin craftsman can copy strads work.....

  • Nice (:

  • Severus Snape fat playing!

  • buying a stradivarius =2.4 million

taking the violin itself and smashing it up and seeing the look on the peoples faces=priceless

  • @chrissycroken David Garret Lol!

  • @chrissycroken actually a stradavarius is priceless. they are artifacts. smashing a stradavarius would be like smashing the mona lisa or blowing up stonehenge. it's just wrong.

  • I think he was not up to the level the instrument was able to produce. He could use a few more lessons.

  • I guess everyone is upset because he's not ASIAN

  • Horrible. What a mediocre, no skills no ideas.

  • Well, obviously he's going to be just a tiny bit nervous/tense...he's playing a fucking Stradivarius.

  • julia fischer plays better this melody......

  • this guy's sound would be good for primus!!!

  • duznt sound any different :OOOOO

  • just when he was setting up i could tell he was one of those players that ack like they know every thing but dont. gosh dude. lighten up a bit. and you fail at playing too

  • Jonathon quit from the BBC to do this? :o

  • In a word, exquisite !

  • Maybe it's because it's a recording, but that violin really doesn't sound all that much better than a modern one.

  • He's certainly got a strange way of handling it.. Doesn't seem to affect his playing, although I'm sure he'll be feeling that in the morning..

  • YOU NO HAVEN GOT A BLOODY CLUE

  • It is a privilege to hear Mr. Grossman play the Bach Partita on the MMA"s Stradivarius. I appreciate his interpretation and musicianship. Thank you.

    marciapolenberg

  • @marciapolenberg I agree with you he plays beautifully and has a solid grasp of this piece technically and musically.

  • ... he looks to angry... and i dont know anything about posture or the violin...

  • Although I know little about correct violin posture (which may seem worse than it actually is, because of the shoulderpads in his jacket... that effects the initial look of both shoulders!), the music this man makes is incredible. He renders the Chaconne very well, with excellent expression and feeling.

Incredible that this clip is noted as demonstration of only the violin...

  • The man gives respect to that beautiful old instrument....as well he should...it will exist longer than he will...

  • the violin is ur friend not your enimy is that how u treat ur friend?

  • he wouldn't be this good if he didn't enjoy the music at least a little!

  • It shouldn't take you 10 minutes to put the damn thing on your shoulder... And loosen up a bit, bro.

  • I don't know why so many feel the need to see someone's "O" face while they are playing. The "feeling" is evident in every note. A good violinist doesn't need to telegraph the emotion by prancing around and making silly faces. If you want a stage show go watch American Idol. I give a thumbs down to everyone who gave this a thumbs down.

  • i don't see the feeling,,,i see that he plays a very difficult song...but it's an empty playing...he don't feel what he plays...that's why i kinda hit the dislike...but i like very much the vid

  • Amazing! Sad, though, that his way of making this perfect sounding violin died with his sons.

  • Termites BEWARE!

  • Where's your head at? he kept asking himself

  • you people are trippin. its pretty good. and lucky ass dude, to get to play on that.

  • i know a lady her son named him stradivarius , owwwwwwwwwww poor boy!!!

  • His playing is perfect, what's with all the criticism ?

  • @Greatmk The problem is that he is soooo "concentrated" thats hes all contracted, not enjoying the music. I couldn't play cello like that it would be horrible...

That guy looks like hes having a stick in his ass...

  • @TehStupidBish You would be horrible. He is amazing. He is nervous, he plays a goddamn violin which was made in 1717

  • Bleuburd: It's the interpretation of the soloist. Personally, I play it a bit slower where Eric Grossman is flying through it, ie. 4:21. FYI: Heifetz played primarily on a 1742 Guarneri delGesu.

  • omg its so good. oh so good.

  • I clicked the soccer ball

  • @mitchtay99

    I want it back!

  • I first played a Strad at age 12. It was AMAZING. :)

  • I think a lot of players feel like they need to play the Chaconne like this. Heifetz played it this way. However, I don't like the clinical nature of the tone produced by these styles.

Ironically, both instrumentalists were playing Strads.

  • lol the critics in this amaze me! whose playing the Stradivari? who is not? thats what I thought...until you get off your $200 Yamaha violins and begin playing professionally on professional level equipment then this guy is light years ahead of you.

It isn't easy to walk into the Smithsonian and demand to play a stradivari.

  • by the way you know only approximately 650 strads are still good these days.

  • Comment removed

  • is the bow a strad too?

  • this sound is pure... perfect

  • this guy is sooooo stiff and non relaxed, when you play a strad, be relaxed and let the strad take over

  • @violadude20 LOL you've taken the piss to say that being that you're never seen a strad in real life

  • @Dertygian One, I have seen a strad, I have played with a person playing a strad Violin. To date I have seen 3 strad violins, 1 strad viola, and 2 Strad cellos; and all of them were in a concert setting. So Thank you for telling me what i have and have not seen.

  • que buen violinista

  • its a strad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for heavens sake, you're lucky enough to actually be playing one, enjoy it and relax.

  • secondo me nn sa suonare senza spalliera

  • Divin!

  • sir.. if you dont mind me harshly but resectfully critiqueing your playing... it wasnt bad.. but if you are gonna play a strad.. play it like you are playing a strad... ok? thanks :)

  • I'm sure Chris Thile could rant on this with them punch brothers right quick!

  • makes me weep when someone plays like this on a strad

  • he plays very well, one mistake only at 1:22 .the strad sounds great in his hands

  • Sarah Palin could play this crappy tune way better.

  • @FatherWarhol if by crappy tune you mean pinnacle of the violin repertoire written by the greatest composer who ever lived and by Sarah Palin you mean James Ehnes then yes, you're absolutely correct.

  • Thanks for uploading!

I think he is a master of his instrument. But I don't like very much what he does to the Strad an to the piece here!

  • The strad sounds incredible - it's in capable hands. :D Heard one in real life not too long ago, and the sound was simply amazing. The violinist was playing Vivaldi's Spring, and I couldn't hear a single screeching sound from the high notes like I expected from an ordinary violin. Respect to Stradivari.

  • Did anyone else hear him fart at :59 ? And with the strad in his hands or was it the person recording, if so I am glad I wasn't behind him.

  • yeah i heard someone farting or was it farting??

  • @cybrsufr i know its one year from know you posted this comment but im laughing so hard rihgt now that i gotta thank you sir!

  • why I watch a violin music video and I read political comments? what a weird world..

  • @antecresearch

politcal comments are everywhere on youtube...but its interessting how much garbage you can find under political videos ;)

  • I know that this Strad is real and so is Eric Grossman. He did a fine job here folks, come on!

  • With all respect; Eric Grossman is a wonderful violinist. This is the way even the greatest violinists let sound this piece of Bach. It's difficult! Having a beautiful Strad or a less beautiful instrument doesn't make big a difference. It's not the Strad that makes warmth and music, gladly it's still the violinist who does that.

  • Sorry but I have to say, this guy, destroys the instrument. An instrument can never sound good, when a player like this guy plays.... Poor strad.

  • @sunyuloveu This man is not a violinist, is a killer!

  • @sunyuloveu by this guy you mean a virtuosis !

  • @sunyuloveu Can you play that Good?

  • @sunyuloveu and just have a look the way he readjusted violin. Oh man, you can do it better!

  • @sunyuloveu you dont know what your talking about

  • u r right!!!

  • @sunyuloveu In my opinion this is much too harsh. This clearly is an excellent violinist, possibly a bit (??) romantic for the Bach but that's a matter of taste. He has a nice sound and he is a musical guy. Anybody here who plays this piece better?

  • @sunyuloveu u don't even know what your talking about, maybe if you played an instument you could clearly tell he has perfect form an tuning on one of the most difficult instuments 2 play solo

  • @sunyuloveu um actually this is how the song goes if you played fallout 3 and got the violin for the women she plays this song

  • @sunyuloveu you are an idiot. have you even heard this piece before?

  • @sunyuloveu you are an idiot. have you even heard this piece before?

  • @sunyuloveu May I ask you how so?

  • @sunyuloveu

That man is not destroying his instrument!! He is getting down to business. Great things don't last forever so can we enjoy them while we have them. Antonio Stradivari would be proud to see and hear such beautiful music flowing from that violin!

  • some of the endings of chords are a little too abrupt

  • Yep, that's a real Strad. I can tell cause it looks just like one I have for sale. I also the vial from which Socrates took the poison and a chair made by Jesus. Naturely these items will not go cheap.

  • Damn that's funny! Do you have the piano wire that mussolini was hung from? I'll pay top dollar for that. I myself am selling a rare custom made one-off kazoo played by Mozart himself. I might trade it for Davey Crockett's coon skin cap. Let me know.

  • No Mussolini wire at the moment, but give me a day or so. Top dollar you say? The problem with kazoos is everybody's got one already. I do have the deed to the Alamo signed by Generalisimo Santa Ana himself and sold during the brief time he was in ownership of it, so actually, that coon skin cap you claim to have belongs to me. Fortuitously, the Alamo is also for sale...pesos or green backs makes no difference. Hurry though, the sale on historic landmarks ends Dec. 31st. I'll throw in a Strad.

  • Well, right now I'm not interested in buying anything, except the piano wire. My wife has given the ultimatum, "no more artifacts! We don't have anymore room." Dammit! I'll never get rid of that kazoo. Some investment that turned out to be. I do have more recent artifacts. i have the bomb sight from the Enola Gay. I have the entire "amber room" in my brother-in-law's garage. It's for sale. Oh, maybe you know someone who's interested in wild bill hicock's last hand of poker. The aces and eights.

  • The Enola Gay bomb sight?. Well, I won't ask, if you won't tell since it's from the military and stuff. I've been doing some thinking about that kazoo. If you were to find a "Ronnie Reagan" signature scratched on the side of it from say 1917, you might be able to unload it. Republicans will believe most anything about him. If you want to sell it to Democrats, you'll have to change the date to 1988 though.

  • Care to trade it for the gun which Hitler took his own life with? Or I've got Pope John Paul's Chastity belt if anyone cares for it? Perhaps the keys to davy jones locker? Sniper rifle used to assassinate JFK? Along with Sherlock Holme's pipe are all for sale if anyone wants em

  • Oh is that so? I have the shroud of turin and the holy grail, care to trade the Socrates cup for my grail? Check out my ebay account.

It's ridiculous seeing all these people claiming they have Stradivarius violins. I mean, who are you kidding? There are less than 700 genuine Strads out there, most of which have probably been destroyed beyond playing condition, and those that are still playable would sell for hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars... RETARDS

  • they go for a few million, a stradivari violin for a few hundred thousand will be the bargin of a life time.

  • No strad will sell for hundreds of thousands. Millions is more like it. Don't use the term retard. It makes you sound ignorant.

  • A Sarah Palin supporter I see? I'm guessing you consider "retard" a "slur"... lmao. Do you know how to spell "OVERREACTING"?

  • First of all. No, I hate all politicians, from Obama to McCain and everyone in between. You're trying to make a point and you use a word like retards to finish. Imagine writing a persuasive essay and you end it with the word retards in all caps. That's pretty ignorant.

  • Straw man. Your point has no correlation whatsoever. This is a youtube comments page, not a persuasive essay.... for future reference, you will not find the best grammar in the world here, nor will you find the most intelligent of people...

  • Many people have copies that appear to be genuine, I have on the belonged to my great, great, great grandfather, and off the internet it appears very similar to a true Strad. violin, but I need to get it authenticated soon to be sure it's not a copy, but even if it is a fake it is still at least 160 years old and handmade.

  • approved

  • don't link the singing .. the sound is great ...

  • he rapes his violin!!!!

  • that violin is freakin' beautiful.

  • relax that posture men enjoy the music...

  • the beginning??? does it really take that long to get prepared??? i think not. btw he isnt AMAZING.

  • lol u fail,

    he's a great violinist

  • HAHAHAHAHHAHA so true,

  • he has to feel comfortable with the violin first, see how he kept changing his chin position

    he IS amazing!

    btw,the sound is so beautiful

  • No it's not a mistake. He's going clear up on the G String for richness and then hitting a harmonic. Anyone who knows anything wouldn't even mention that. I dare you to find anyone who can play the chaconne with as much character, accuracy and richness as Mr. Grossman.
