I met some Dominicans a while back. I became very interested in their culture and other cultures similar to Afro Americans. By similar I mean with origins of African slaves in the history. I can't help but notice that race and denial keep coming up. Why be so concerned about a persons race? Character is far more important. We are all so mixed by now racially that it really won't matter and that is how it should be. In time we will all know just how similar we are.

Please do not disrespect a community that has come here before many Central and South American people, and worked to better this nation. Thank you for defending us, Cacique. We Dominicans come in an array of colors envied by many. We are educated (I'm a teacher finishing my Master's Degree; will soon start my PhD). This election was not about race, it was about electing the most proficient candidate to lead our country. I proudly stood in line for five hours, and went knocking door to door for our new President.

I 2 did my share of volunteering & I feel so proud to be a part of this country. Obama has not made any decision as pres but he has already impacted the world in such a profound way. I am Puertorican and most Puertoricans supported Hillary over Obama in the primary as did most Latinos. But the best man won and I am proud as a Latino to have voted for Obama. I am not trying to offend you in any way shape or form, but blacks and African Americans did open the door for your people "The Boricua" the Puerto Ricans ! Also, The white people of the U.S. consider the Puerto Ricans black themselves. When the Puerto Ricans were coming to the U.S. (mainland) they often went to neighborhoods clustered along and with the Black Americans. Yet, even still, Puerto Ricans are denying their blackness even more. And yes I am not saying that all Puerto Ricans are black persay, but most Puerto Ricans have black in them and many are just straight up pure black period. Puerto Ricans often act as if they are better, but you know what ! AFRICAN AMERICANS OPENED THE DOOR for all races/ethnicities and groups of people. To make it simple, black Americans have a low status and everything above them is judged and based around being better.

Other Latinos say that we assosiate with blacks to much. You say that we think that we are white and dont appreciate the struggle of African Americans. I will never take away the from the struggle that African Americans had and how it helped us. On the other hand you cant make it out to be that we as a people are helpless and would be nowhere with African Americans. We also fought many of our own battles to get respect here and by the way still have a long way to go.

If anything, Puerto Ricans tend to be more racist towards about blacks as opposed to Blacks being racist towards Puerto Ricans !

Also another thing you failed to acknowledge is that most PUERTO RICANS are black and/or of African descent. Many are mixed with black. And some are pure or more visibly black. Even white looking Puerto Ricans may have some black in them.

Why do Puerto Ricans deny their blackness or perpetuate their Hispanicity.

When over 90% of Black people voted for Obama in the primaries it does matter that almost all Dominicans are black. Obama being black is the reason most Dominicans are voting for him.
