At the start of the series, the summer has lasted 10 years, so "winter is coming" is used to symbolize not only the inevitable coming winter SEASON, but a time of darkness and cold for ALL of Westeros... Not really a spoiler, BUT READ THE BOOKS!

If you've actually read the books you'd know it's set in a time long, long before recorded history and thousands and thousands of years before the Middle Ages. And whilst you're right in that the Middle Ages weren't exclusive to GB it is GB it is most associated with (in the same way that space exploration isn't exclusive to America but that's where it's most associated).

@Dervanon There is no such thing as a British accent. Britain has dozens and dozens of different accents in the same way someone from New York sounds different to someone from Chicago or Texas. The accent they're speaking with is received pronunciation which is a neutral English accent. And the reason it's used is because, rightly or wrongly, people associate the Middle Ages with Great Britain so shows and films that have that feel use RP.

@exolden I disagree A LOT though I respect your opinion. The books are supposed to be slow because they contain not only a plot but are an experience. What does it feel like to be in a fantasy world? What would happen if fantasy and its common characters were realisitc? Badly written? I think not. I never cared and felt more sad about fictional characters more than I did for the characters in ASIAF, especially the Stark children. Like Watchmen, its a perfect book series, just flawless.

Even the readers are divided on what/who they like the best. Ex. I'm a big Arya fan but my friend quit reading the series cuz he says "he got bored of too many Arya chapters"

Its right up there with Watchmen, Neon Genesis Evangelion Pillars of the Earth (the book, not the anti-catholic TV series. Witchcraft indeed. Not even in the middle ages were the inquisitors that stupid) and Harry Potter. If I had to mention the worst book I've ever read, its an obscure Maltese book called The Fiddien. Its HORRIBLE. It has the WORST anti-climax you'll ever read.
