  • @polarisrida69 I've got a lab ridgeback mix, he's 15 months old, and he's the most mild mannered, least aggressive dog I've ever seen. He has never growled, and only puts the ridge up when he thinks another dog is coming into our yard, then he sniffs them, and they're best friends.

  • Well our Ridgeback loves water, just one wee problem tho, when our Staffy swims out to get the stick/ball she ambush's him and sinks him till he lets go!

Well last week this senario happened again,Staffy swam out after a long play session and retrieved a large stick, then he got into difficulty and started going under!

OMG ! Then our Ridgeback jumped into the water.. Fearing the worst I was just about to dive in when instead of sinking him she grabbed the stick, tilted her head and lifted him up!

  • My Ridgeback didn't like water at all. I suspect Tyra's not so crazy about it either, because she started after the stick, but stopped. Ridgebacks are the BEST with kids, whether or not they're aggressive! They have a pack attitude but watch for babies and little kids as if they're puppies too!!

  • ha!! i love Tyra! she reminds me of my ridgeback :) they are the BEST. i like how she's "baying" the other dog like it's a lion :D :D

  • wow haha! Tyra is representing the breed well! She wasnt even a bit winded after that ruckus.

  • @polarisrida69 If your still debating.. I'd say get one. Mine is very playful, and gets serious when unknown people are around. Doesn't bite, but when provoked hegrowls and looks scary. :P

Dave, depends on what you want the dog for. I have had a couple of ridgebacks, and once you have one you'll keep getting them. They not an agressive dog, they love people and other dogs, they are very playful, can be a bit rough when they play because of their size. If you want a smaller dog, the females are about 10kg lighter and smaller in stature. Only problem I have with my ridgebacks is that they can be a big destructive, they get bored easily and need plenty of exercise.

  • I have only had one RR so I can only speak for Tyra. She is a very gentle dog. Easy to learn new things but she needs a lot of motivation. She goes along with all dogs but can be a bit bitchy when she is on a leash. She loves people and do try to guard our house but she is to happy to get visitors so I guess she is not a really good guarddog. ;-) Now after getting our first baby we have realised that she is a wonderful dog with babies! :-)

  • My late Ridgeback did not like water, I would carry her way out and she would swim right back. Also, she would not drink moving water. Never from a stream and if you just put her bowl down, she would waite until the water was still.

But she was a great dog and we loved her a lot.

  • mmh.. my rhodesian ridgeback dosen't like water.. and additionally he doesnt bark.. only if he thinks that he is in danger, but not if he is enjoying something. is that untypical?

  • Typically rhodesians don't like water. On rare occasions they like it. Mine loves swimming in my pool, he even goes to my pool on his own to take a quick swim, very intellegent dogs. As for the barking, i'm not sure. Mine only really barks when people or dogs walk by my house or like you said, when he feels threatened or he feels we might be threatened.

  • It is typical. Ridgebacks aren't barkers...I've had 2 and neither of them were/are barkers.

  • :) !!!!

  • That RR is off it's trolley!

  • that black dog seems so well mannered.

  • She's Beautiful!

  • beautiful dogs, I have a border collie/aussie and rr, the collie swims hopefully the new rr pup will as well

  • It is a very happy video!!!

  • lol my ridgeback HATES water

  • My ridgeback hated water too! The only thing he would do is get into a kiddie pool and stick his nose in and blow bubbles. Such crazy and wonderful dogs...I miss him... :(

  • this video sucks.

  • are you an idiot?????

  • Why does it suck

  • You suck, this video is great!

  • I love how the other dog is acting the EXACT opposite of the RR. he's all calm and collected, even lays down at the end while the RR goes bonkers.

  • my ridgeback hates the water she wont even go in a kiddy pool she is 2 years her name is layla

  • hahaha...have the same problem with mine 4,5 year old boy :)I have managed to trick him in when I also was in the water..

  • beautiful dog you've got there, they're so adorable :)

  • Hi all! Tyra only goes into the water when she has a mission. Here in the video is about to retrieve the stick before Yatzy (the Aussie). With no mission she doesn't go into the water. :-)

  • My female loves the water but only when she wants to lol She attacks the sprinklers

  • For some reason my ridgeback hates the water.

    lol =D

  • I really like the video!! And I hardly cant wait untill my little rr puppy is finally arriving!

  • Isnt it funny how Ridgebacks dont retrieve, but they chase anything that does?? Crazy. Cute video.
