  • verry good

  • what the? zawinull on bass?

  • Ed, this is one of my favorite videos that you've done. Perhaps my -very- favorite. It's also one of the first I've seen...again, perhaps the very first! It's a magic combination of great source material, great playing, and a great bass. I know it's a Fender J-Bass, but can you tell me more? What kind of pups, hardware, etc. What kind of amp? Man I love the sound of this thing! Great video!

  • @AUDEPrecords - Yeah, maybe the first one. Back then I just sat in front of the built in camera on my Mac and played loud. It was a Fender Custom Shop Ultra Relic 64 Jazz. It was stock, so whatever they spec for the bass is what it had. It got sold a long time ago. The amp was my Genz Benz GBE 1200 through a Genz NeoX 212 cab.

  • Amazing solo !

  • Geez! peeling off those 1/16 notes.... Thats some serious bass shredding

  • awesome man! you can really hear the changes

  • First time I bump into this video! What colour's you Jazz? It looks great!

PS: At times like this I really than you for all the recording upgrades you've done (Camera, mics, etc)

  • is that a fender

  • @awsnap300 - Yes it is.

  • man even the simple stuff you make sound amazing. very cool and kudos on charlie parker. maybe donna lee next....

  • Me encanta este hombre. Es increíble. Tanto acompañando como haciendo solos. Un crack.

  • Nice man! heard a lil donna lee lick in there 1:24

  • if he will be a UFC fighter he will be a well rounded fighter :D

  • I want to say:Excelent!!!!!

  • Hi Ed, How do you go about constructing your bass lines? I understanding keeping the notes within the scale but do you have chords in mind that you reference. How does that work for you? Stephen

  • Beautiful playing and beautiful bass. Would this have been the one from Bass Emporium?

  • Talk about well rounded....you're the man Ed.

    p.s. Shouldn't you be reviewing a bass!!??

  • sigh is there anything you cant do man??

sweet sounds and seriously if I lived in Austin I would seriously get lessons there

  • You're the New Buddah of the BAss!

  • Well, thanks, but there's already a Buddah of the bass... Bill Dickens. Maybe Ganesh isn't taken?

  • ohh its very nice ... i live in brazil and i like to watch bossa shows ,you are so good , congratulations

  • GREAT !!!Big respect!

  • awesome

  • Man, I wish I could solo like that over Parker tunes!

  • fuck

  • BRAVO!!

  • great sound Ed!what is this blusette?toots

  • Thanks, it's actually the changes of Blues For Alice, very similar root motion to Bluesette though.

  • nice bossa groove man!!!

  • Thanks.

  • I saw the 64 on your myspace page. Are you gonna leave the pickup covers on it?

  • No, they came off immediately and went into the case. They look great, but they cover my two favorite places to play.

  • Hi Ed, nice Jazz! Is it Lake Placid Blue???

  • It's called Metallic Teal, but I sold it a while ago. Now I have a CS NOS '64 Jazz in Seafoam Green!

  • Awesome Ill pick it up! I have 7 of your books, plus your slap DVD, they have all been excellent, both to go through and to look back on for reference. Im sure "The Working Bassist's Toolkit" will be no different!

    John

  • Thanks!

  • As always Ed your awesome on this! Any chance on releasing a book on chords for bass, with possibly examples like the above video on cd to go along with it?

  • Thanks. Actually I did write a chapter on bass chords for my book "The Working Bassist's Toolkit". It covers all the shapes I used in this video, and also extended them to the 5-string. Check it out!

  • great playing!

    great mustach!?

  • Such a clean tone! How do you get such a bright, sparkling tone from a bass like that?

Not dissing Jazzes in any way, but I've never known a tone like that to come from any Fender!

  • Well, I simply plugged it into my amp. That's the way the bass sounds, no tricks involved.

  • Blues for Alice is one of my favorite tunes to jam.

  • first tune that actually got me into jazz... I worked on it for a year!

  • Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • great playing!!

  • excellent cover!!!well played man..bravo.....btw whitch jazz bass is this one?

  • It's a Custom Shop Ultra Relic '64 Jazz - which I unfortunately no longer own! Oh well, they come and they go. Beautiful axe, I miss it.

  • I'm 19 and i've just bought my first instrument, a yamaha bass. cheers for the upload, people like you keep me playing :)

  • Hi! im yusef from Mexico my writening aren't very good, but i need speak to you my opinion...woooow very good bassist!! i like your books i have the jazz improvisation and think is a good job CONGRATULATIONS! :D

  • Gracias!

  • It's nice to see a Bass player on YouTube being musical rather than trying to show off super speed or fancy chops with no musical value.

  • Blues For Alice,

  • Yeah, this is the chord progression from Blues For Alice. Bluesette has similar root motion, but it is not the same tune.

  • Sorry it was a mistake this post.Good job by the way. You're very helpful.

  • In France this kind of chords'progression, we call it "Blues suédois".

Blues for Alice is a good theme from Charlie Parker, I love it, I think "Bluesette" is quite the same progression.

  • Thanks for the hints Ed; very helpful.

    One more question: How would you play a major chord (no 7th)? Root, 3rd 5th? Just a double stop (root, 3rd)? I'm curious how you would play Pachelbel's Canon (D A Bm F#m G D G A),

  • Well, it would be hard to tell you in this small space how exactly I'd approach that piece... but for triads, I might play a root-five-tenth voicing. This does go against my previous statement about not putting the E and A string together in a voicing, but with a perfect 5th, it's fine. You can also play root-octave-tenth for triads. For the Pachelbel, I'd use a lot of open strings since they are available.

  • What a great song played expertly on a great bass!

I noticed that you play 2 or 3 chord shapes in the beginning of the song. What chord tones are you using on each string (i.e., root, 3rd, 7th)? I really like the alternating right thumb action too. Any other hints on playing chords on the bass? Thanks.

Oh, by the way, your solo is quite tasty too! ;-)

  • Thanks! The chords are all built using roots, 3rds and 7ths. The only thing to watch for is not to put notes on the E and A string together in a chord, Too muddy on the bass. Most of these chords also keep the third finger on the G string so it's mostly a matter of switching around the first and second fingers.

  • I've follow your column in bass mags but never seen you play until now. It's good to see that you play just as good as you teach. Thank you for a many of lessons I've learn from.

  • Thanks!

  • The chord progression is from Blues For Alice, though I never play the melody.

  • Pardon my ignorance - what is this Charlie Parker tune?

  • Obviously Ed, you are one accomplished SOB on the bass ... I loved your magazine, real bummer it's no longer available, I guess the age of the internet played a part in it's demise??????????

  • Yeah, probably. It's tough times for print media, and large corporations like that are cutting off the little stuff.

  • Sounds very brazilian/latin americanish. Nice.

  • I wish I could play like this in future :p

  • yes man i love

  • props to you ed. i love the bass and your dvd on slap. it defiately helped me learn to play slap bass

  • have you ever heard of the band the groove diggers?

they did a song (a night in tunsia) that has an awesome bass solo near the end of it doing alot of those crazy runs!

i wish i knew even just a thimbleful of the theory and fretboard knowledge that you have!!!

  • Ed trades his cowboy hat for a beret and is still completely at ease. You, sir, got it goin' on.

  • Dale,

Well, I didn't actually trade in the cowboy hat, check out the Godlyke 10 string preview... I put a "Bassneck Mountain" ending on it....

  • very good phrasing, nice sound, nice jazz bass too...
