Ed, this is one of my favorite videos that you've done. Perhaps my -very- favorite. It's also one of the first I've seen...again, perhaps the very first! It's a magic combination of great source material, great playing, and a great bass. I know it's a Fender J-Bass, but can you tell me more? What kind of pups, hardware, etc. What kind of amp? Man I love the sound of this thing! Great video!
@AUDEPrecords - Yeah, maybe the first one. Back then I just sat in front of the built in camera on my Mac and played loud. It was a Fender Custom Shop Ultra Relic 64 Jazz. It was stock, so whatever they spec for the bass is what it had. It got sold a long time ago. The amp was my Genz Benz GBE 1200 through a Genz NeoX 212 cab.
Hi Ed, How do you go about constructing your bass lines? I understanding keeping the notes within the scale but do you have chords in mind that you reference. How does that work for you? Stephen
Awesome Ill pick it up! I have 7 of your books, plus your slap DVD, they have all been excellent, both to go through and to look back on for reference. Im sure "The Working Bassist's Toolkit" will be no different!
As always Ed your awesome on this! Any chance on releasing a book on chords for bass, with possibly examples like the above video on cd to go along with it?
Thanks. Actually I did write a chapter on bass chords for my book "The Working Bassist's Toolkit". It covers all the shapes I used in this video, and also extended them to the 5-string. Check it out!
Hi! im yusef from Mexico my writening aren't very good, but i need speak to you my opinion...woooow very good bassist!! i like your books i have the jazz improvisation and think is a good job CONGRATULATIONS! :D
One more question: How would you play a major chord (no 7th)? Root, 3rd 5th? Just a double stop (root, 3rd)? I'm curious how you would play Pachelbel's Canon (D A Bm F#m G D G A),
Well, it would be hard to tell you in this small space how exactly I'd approach that piece... but for triads, I might play a root-five-tenth voicing. This does go against my previous statement about not putting the E and A string together in a voicing, but with a perfect 5th, it's fine. You can also play root-octave-tenth for triads. For the Pachelbel, I'd use a lot of open strings since they are available.
What a great song played expertly on a great bass!
I noticed that you play 2 or 3 chord shapes in the beginning of the song. What chord tones are you using on each string (i.e., root, 3rd, 7th)? I really like the alternating right thumb action too. Any other hints on playing chords on the bass? Thanks.
Thanks! The chords are all built using roots, 3rds and 7ths. The only thing to watch for is not to put notes on the E and A string together in a chord, Too muddy on the bass. Most of these chords also keep the third finger on the G string so it's mostly a matter of switching around the first and second fingers.
I've follow your column in bass mags but never seen you play until now. It's good to see that you play just as good as you teach. Thank you for a many of lessons I've learn from.
Obviously Ed, you are one accomplished SOB on the bass ... I loved your magazine, real bummer it's no longer available, I guess the age of the internet played a part in it's demise??????????

No, they came off immediately and went into the case. They look great, but they cover my two favorite places to play.

Such a clean tone! How do you get such a bright, sparkling tone from a bass like that?
Not dissing Jazzes in any way, but I've never known a tone like that to come from any Fender!
eventhoriz0n 3 years ago
Well, I simply plugged it into my amp. That's the way the bass sounds, no tricks involved.

Blues For Alice,
tourbatos 4 years ago
Yeah, this is the chord progression from Blues For Alice. Bluesette has similar root motion, but it is not the same tune.
BassGuitarMag 4 years ago
Sorry it was a mistake this post.Good job by the way. You're very helpful.
tourbatos 4 years ago
In France this kind of chords'progression, we call it "Blues suédois".
Blues for Alice is a good theme from Charlie Parker, I love it, I think "Bluesette" is quite the same progression.
