There are over a billion christians. Say for each day, there's a new case of maltreatment. That means 1 per million people do this over the course of 3 years. A child is more likely to drown in the bathtub than get that sort of treatment.
Now, a point on which you are completely wrong is that religion is the ONLY thing that causes this treatment. The only way you'd get to that conclusion is that that the religous instances are the stories that you and/or your newspaper pay attention to.
It is the only thing someone can use to rationalize that behavior.
When you ask someone to rationalize/support what they did, if they have murdered, raped or killed... if they are not religious they will tell you they did wrong.

What I mean by question is let's say you were attracted to Tibetan Buddhism (just an example:). And you are allowed to pose all sorts of philosophical questions as opposed to faiths where debate isn't allowed. I think you get it. In fact it is easy to make superstitious people (such as believers in gods) commit evil: anyone with no ethics and morals and human compassion can learn how to subvert other people's thinking in just a few weeks.

Basically taking/stealing money breaking up families, totally controling people etc. eg people who left the church had to be "de-programmed".
