Just happened upon this. You can see someone playing Star Blazer on an Apple II in the first 10 seconds of the music video for "Take Me Away" by Blue Oyster Cult! The song came out in 1983.
Played this after school in the computer room in 1981 or 82. Literally the computer because there was only one Apple IIe in there. I remember the teacher pulled the floppy disk out in a rage (maybe the earliest computer rage in a school?) and ruined all the classes work.
Uh, I never killed the tank in this video. The point was not whether I was hot stuff at it, but just to show the game a little bit. If you want to show all the levels, you can post your own video.
Hmmm, I see I'm not the only one who had a hard time with that $*#& bloody tank! I always wondered what Suzuki was smoking when he came up with a tank that could outrun your jet! Now that's a RealLife[tm] engineering challenge!
As I recall, you could hit "ESC" and the game would pause, enabling you to advance it one frame at a time. It was cheating, but it made the 5th level where you have to fight an aerial dogfight a lot easier! :)
This was constantly played on my Apple 2e, in 1983.
The trick to the tank level is to go up in the air in front of him, then drop down as fast as you can, pounding on the fire button all the way down. It will usually spit out a bomb that the tank wont have time to dodge.
I know about that technique. I used to be able to do it when I played it a lot. I was trying to carry out those actions on that level, but didn't do it right.
The thing that's really challenging about the maneuver is you have to get up high enough to make the drop, and at the same time you have to try to dodge the ships flying at you!
Thanks for posting this - had this game on our Zebra II ( Taiwanese Apple II pirate computer ) in the early '80s and had never seen it in colour until now due to us having a green monitor! Great game.
Glad you enjoyed it. I played this as a teenager. I used to be better at it. There's a 3rd level you don't see in the video where you have to try to blow up the radar again, but with ships that launch bomb-laden balloons at you. I have videos of some other classic 8-bit games if you're interested. Check out the link to my videos.
Damn....i was playing this when i was 4 years old......the last time when i saw this was 22 years ago....man...time flys......unbelievable to see this again....

You are horrible at this game! It took you forever to kill the tank.
