The white one is an Ironhead not a Shovelhead.  Look at the push rods and the cases.

@scooterscum1 haha. yeah. got to know what's what, for sure. lets take you to 1st grade now-the sportster has a Right side chain drive, and the Shovel has a Left side chain drive. the sportster engine and trans are one unit,thats what makes it a sportster. On a shovel, the engine and trans are separate units. google and few engines and study them closely. there will be a test on friday and if you miss this question again, you will recieve and F at life and be chatised and mocked for eternity.

@jdu6: buy a kit bike and get a donor engine. try tejas thump, i bought a knucklehead frame kit from them for an old engine i had layin around, and they have quite a few different models available

Different years, different models.

Flathead = early

then Knuckle = heads look a bit like a knuckled fist.

then Pan = heads look like cooking pans

then Shovel= you guessed it.....heads look like top view of shovels.

Ironhead is an early Sportster motor.

chainsawRaptor nice to see you have an interest in the old school harleys to see the differance in the motors like a panhead knucklehead shovelhead click on a video that says starting my panhead and take a look at the top of the motor the panhead looks like a frying pan and do the same for the other 2 and look at the top of the motor and you will learn the diff as a new motor came out it got a new name hope this helps

The Pan head got its name from the large flat covers at the top of the cylinder heads. So if you want to be a technical jerk, it's actually The Harley Davidson Motorcycle Engine's Cylinder Head Assembly Rocker Box Assembly Covers that give the BIKE it's slang name.

Currently the registered owner of 1 '37 U model Flattie, 2 UL Knuckles a '42 and a '47, 2 Pans a '56 duo-Glide and a '65 Electra- Glide, a '53 K model and an 06 Ultra-Classic. . Head assemblies include everything BUT the boxes. Look it up in an H-D parts manual. Shame so many went to Japan and Europe. Hard to find now.

@1971SuperLead The only one of the engines we are discussing that has the rockers mounted on the head is the Pan. Knuckles and Shovels have the rockers mounted in the BOXES. Pull the knuckles or shovels off the head and the rocker arms come with it. They are mounted on rockers shafts in the rocker boxes, or covers same thing. We always call them rocker boxes and most H-D mechanics refer to them as rocker boxes. the Pan is a valve cover, pull it and the rockers remain on the head. Semantics.

All boxes have covers but the pan is the one engine that had no rocker box. So definitely the pan is not named for the rocker box for it has no rocker box. The rest have rocker boxes but STILL the names come from the rocker box COVERS.

Take off the rocker "housing and the rocker arms come off with them. There are no covers over the castings. no internal mount to the head for the rocker. Work on a few and maybe you'll understand.The Pans on the the engine have nothing under them between the head and the pan. Just a chrome stamped sheet metal Pan. and gasket. The Evo's are Block heads, FYI.

It comes in two pieces and the top part is often refered to as the cover but it certainly is more than just a cover, it is part of the rocker box as well.The knuckle head clearly has a rocker box and a rocker box cover. Yet the knuclehead is known by it BOLTS that hold the covers onto the rocker boxes. Goggle Shovelhead or Knucklehead rocker box COVERS and you will see.

This means the bikes are named after the cylinder head ASSEMBLIES. After all they are called ShovelHEADS, PanHEADS and KnuckleHEADS and not Shovelsboxes or Knuckleboxes or Pancovers.

Harley Davidson Original; Parts and Service Manuals are the SOLE authority on the Bikes the Company builds. When you order a crank shaft, that's what you get. If you order a complete reciprocating balanced assembly you get Crank, bearings, Rods and pitons. Later.

@pistoleer3 If there set up right, the Evo's will idle just like this. Most idle them to fast and owners to young to remember what a Harley's idle should sound like. . My 06 Ultra idles just like the old ones. Lose the baffles and set it at 450 warm and you're all set. The crap they tell you it will damage the engine is just that. Set mine up the day I brought it home and it runs as good as the day I bought it off the show room. It's a Harley, it should idle like a Harley.

@pistoleer3 Now positive on the EFI late models. I do know the adjustment seals will have to be removed. Once the seals are gone it should be a simple matter of dropping the idle speed using the idle stop screw and recalibrating the idle mixture for the lower RPM. Mine is a carburetor motor so it's just like setting up the old ones. I'm sure it can be done of the EFI models. You may also have to reset the Electronic ignition timing. Let me check my manuals and I'll get back to you.
