One part you missed is the attack on Russian peacekeeping contingent and also the fact that many in Tskhinvali had applied for and received Russian citizenship which makes them Russian subjects. Coupled with Russian decree of protecting their citizens no matter where they are it gave them a more then sufficient reason to give Georgian forces a hiding. Sorry but thats a fact.
