What seems "caucasian" to you may be interpreted as "Japanese" to its creators, for the drawing style is what appeals most to their audiences. It is pointless to debate the characters' ethnicity, since their appearances (unnaturally colored hair, ridiculously large busts) lean more toward "fantasy" than "real".

Japanese artists are naturally going to portray what appeals most to their own cultural perspective. However, to insist that Japanese art reveals no outside influence is also foolish. Manga characters are usually drawn to reflect HUMAN standards of beauty. Large eyes, heart shaped face, slender frame... These are characteristics valued in most, in not all, modern cultures. in the 1960s, colored anime were not common. in the 1970s anime, yellow hair means blonde. other color hair means alien. in the 1980-1990s anime, color hair expresses personalities. red is passionate blue is calm yellow is immature pink is innocent gray is mysterious for example. in the 2000s anime, color hair means almost nothing.

If the colour of an anime or cartoon character's skin defines their race, does that make the Simpsons all Asian? The faces are drawn to mimic real life in a way, but often with outrageously big eyes and near-impossible hair styles.

Why are you desperate to make characters white? Yes there are white characters in anime, due to context or location. But unless explicitly demonstrated they are Japanese.

I think this video is right except "a breif history lesson". small eyes were not the japanese standard of beauty at the time. in the old japanese pictures, women's small eyes mean modesty. that small eyes at 2:40 express her personality, not apperance.

What seems "caucasian" to you may be interpreted as "Japanese" to its creators, for the drawing style is what appeals most to their audiences. For Westerners to say that anime characters are primarily Caucasian is the height of arrogance considering this is a medium that originated in another culture. Japanese artists are naturally going to portray what appeals most to their own cultural perspective. However, to insist that Japanese art reveals no outside influence is also foolish. Foreign cultures have been seen and reflected to some degree in Japan and, by extension, Japan's art. So, my answer is that it is neither and it is both.

It's an art style! The colour palette is chosen to best accentuate the style of drawing, define characters and create an icon. If the colour of an anime or cartoon character's skin defines their race, does that make the Simpsons all Asian? The faces are drawn to mimic real life in a way, but often with outrageously big eyes and near-impossible hair styles.

The inner corner of the eye is sharper and the outer corner of the eye is rounder, giving it an oval shape. Anime characters are drawn with the complete opposite, round eyes. since anime creators grow up in japan, its natural that most anime characters are based on japanese. sailor mercury including her personality was based on a japanese actress named sakai noriko for example.
but anime creators introduce fashions into anime. lots of characters in the 1980s science fiction anime were based on caucasian because of hollywood movies. the protagonist of space adventure cobra was basd on a french actor named jean paul belmondo for example. check out "AMV" on my channel.

@Fire7Knight By "African", TipsyArmadillo obviously means "black" or "Negroid", which is an incorrect term since you'd be hard-pressed to find any person LITERALLY BLACK, and the name was given due to the fact that in comparison to the other races, they look "black". Since we don't use the term "slant-eyes" in another language to describe Asians, and we don't use "long nose" to describe Caucasians, why would we need to say "black"?

And IMO, the point of this video is that anyone can look like a Japanimation character (well, the more realistic ones), because they're quite literally stylized cartoons that go according to the artist's own decision on how their characters will look like, not race (unless they're actually aiming for their character/s to look a certain race).

excellent response to that other unnecessarily angry video. people need to stop fighting over this stuff and enjoy it for what it is. both videos made excellent points but I think this one takes it with all of the examples of caucasian anime characters looking no different from the japanese ones. certain art styles differentiate the two but generally speaking most anime fits into the code geass mould

I think this video is right except "a breif history lesson". small eyes were not the japanese standard of beauty at the time. in the old japanese pictures, women's small eyes mean modesty. that small eyes at 2:40 express her personality, not apperance.

Acutally, no arguement is needed. It's Japanese and is a fact. Even drawing manga, there is Japanese and English styles. I've read manga for years and I'm a Japanese. Non of us Asians actually even think that anime characters are Caucasian. The arguement started because of some retard claiming the Japanese are looking up to the whites which aren't true. While most people can't tell, we CAN CERTAINLY differentiate whether the characters are Japanese or not.

Sailor Moon looks nothing like a Caucasian. Her facial structure and frame doesn't resemble a Caucasians, as it is too slight. If you go through some BMI studies, you'd notice the difference. Our testosterone levels are higher.
