Your consultant may have a point. Too many home have no protection. Homes with smoke detectors are 50% less likely to have a fire related deaths. This is personal to me because my grandmother died in a home fire. I never was able to meet her.
photo electric is better than ionization my consultant tells me the ionization type is recommeneded as a recall product since it does not go off in smoldering fires

said it is better to say that if often does not go off in smoldering fires rather than it is ineffective
