Filtering as I understand it when I took my motorbike training, on this type of road you should of been on the right side of the vehicle but in this case you positioned yourself in the inside lane. always going be dangerous ,if there was a central reservation and it was 2 lanes then you are legally allowed to filter down the middle but on a motorbike I would never travel down the inside, A motorcyclist hit my car door doing that while I was turning left and badly damaged it,he paid me out.
Ignorance is everywhere. When we go through the daily grind of commuting or working through a document on the PC, or watching a game, we get into habits and take risks. Or we become ignorant of the rules we've learned long ago. This woman at least rendered an apology... even if she didn't realise at the time just how much danger she had put the cyclist into.
This type of encounter was short and ended up somewhat fruitful in that she didn't turn hostile.
regardless of the law in the UK or USA...you are riding a 20 pound aluminum vehicle (albeit 3 feet OUTSIDE your designated riding area)...amoungst 3000-4000 pound CARS. REGARDLESS of the law one day you WILL be hit and REGARDLESS whose fault you think it is you wont be alive to reply to any of these comments.
@muscleammo designated riding area? You must be from a foreign country. Cars in this country are not as fat and sloppy either. Cyclist generally live longer than most.
If you consider that filtering between 2 lanes means you will be both overtaking and undertaking at the same time. Highway Code Rule 88 says: "...When in traffic queues look out for pedestrians crossing between vehicles and vehicles emerging from junctions or changing lanes. Position yourself so that drivers in front can see you in their mirrors. Additionally, when filtering in slow-moving traffic, take care and keep your speed low."
Here though, you were on the far left, so no overtaking was done, just under.
HC Rule 88 is a funny one. It does not specifically mention bikes undertaking you. I am being a little bit of a shit in that by picking really.
I know the driver should be aware however of a bike coming up on any side and especially in a city where there are clearly hundreds of them all around.
My speed was low enough to be able to stay upright after being hit. No injuries or damage were sustained. After exchanging looks with the driver and receiving their waved apology I carried on with the remaining 8 or 9 miles left to my destination.
LOL, thanks for watching and for the comment. My legs are strong from all the riding though and power me through a minimum of 150 miles per week for my commute, not to mention the extra miles I cover for fun at the weekends.
American viewer? Note that filtering may not be legal in much of the United States but it is however legal in most of the rest of the world. The driver in this clip however failed to drive with "due care and consideration" and therefore committed an act of "dangerous driving", both of which are legal requirements.
@frozenfarm Cyclists ALWAYS have the right of way. The cyclist was in the right..the car should have made sure no one was there and I'm sure that car saw him on the bike and passed him a few miles back, so he knew he was there. Go read up on cycling laws before you say stupid things. Cycling laws are different than motor vehicle laws, dude.
I've seen some of ur videos and you keep so cool...i cycle and i could not keep cool with idiots like this...i'd have to start shouting...but i know i can shout...as i've done Mauy Thai kick boxing for years...this gives me the final go ahead to shout..i've never been on the losing side yet...im glad i don't cycle in London...i think i'd be banged up by now in prison.
@midfielderlegend he was on the round about and van hit him and the motorbikes fell to the side of the van and got stuck under it and van carries on driving fast and he ankle left was stuck under the motorbike which was being pushed by the van, and people blew there horns to make him stop , and van drive drove of quickly and bike managed to slip out after 100 yard or so and i saw hes ankle after it was broken and i could see all hes bones and it was all hanging by one side and got infected.
That's really nasty and a terrible tale to have been involved in. I hope your brother made a speedy recovery although from the sounds of his injuries he probably has some lasting damage. Sorry to hear about that, my sympathies to you both.
They call that Road Rage but where does that get you? The driver apologised, which was the right thing to do, so that's that. Maybe he learned from the experience. I certainly did. I'm more careful at this point to watch for any left turns. By fighting him he will only think less of cyclists and may not give another rider the respect they deserve, thus I would have indirectly caused more potential danger on the road, not to mention any other drivers who would have been held up.
Both at fault. Car didnt look. Bike undertaking at a intersection and on a single lane road. All i have to say is the biker is on the road and should follow the same rules as a car remember thats a few ton of metal VS you.
u should really make more of a meal of these situations, falling over and rolling around infront of their car holding your knee like a footballer would be a much better ending to the video hahahahaa do it next time mate hahahhahahaa
Thanks for watching. I have a car already but there's little point using it for most of my journeys. I can get places in less time when I cycle. Just have to keep an eye out though! Thanks for the tip to get the number plate. If I think the camera won't pick it up I often call it out so it's on the sound track too. Trouble is, you can't always tell beforehand if you will need that information as most drivers are responsible road users.
As they were stuck in traffic, I kinda expected them to stay put. Not to suddenly pull to the left in an attempt to undertake the car in front. Ah well, that's the way it goes. One in a million perhaps. At least, the only time I recall this happening in 15 years of cycling...
@pondhall A fly in your ointment - the cyclist is filtering legally and the car didn't check his mirrors or signal before moving into what was, a narrow space. Driver at fault. Check your Highway Code please.
TBH, I'm not even sure. If I had to say one way or the other, I'd say the driver. They were stopped in traffic, then suddenly, impatiently pulled left to drive around the car in front of them.
Absolutely right not to undertake buses or lorries and think carefully even if it's a van. Their vision is never as good as a car drivers but even then you still have to hope they look.
With hindsight, obviously in this instance I would have at least slowed but in the moment I would not have expected the driver to attempt what he did. As another commentator said here, "expect the unexpected".
In heavy traffic there is a greater chance of encountering a driver who doesn't look, doesn't think or just doesn't see a cyclist. I ride 30 miles every day into Central London and back again, so I get to see a lot. What ends up on YouTube is only a small fraction of what I see, spending 2 hours a day on the bike and largely it's going to be the incidents. Most of the time cycling is very safe indeed and no, I don't get a thrill out of close calls like this.
Just failed to check his mirrors prior to altering course and speed. Given the presence of the cycle lane to the immediate nearside of the carriageway the driver should have anticipated the presence of the the cyclist.
I think they were more focussed on not being able to proceed through that green light given the pedestrians still using the crossing and the queue of traffic the other side. Yes it would have been good for them to check mirrors before manoeuvring suddenly like that but it's a lesson learned - for both hopefully. I at least view this intersection with a little more caution.
I have been to Greece and had a great time there too! Didn't get a chance to cycle while I was there but did drive a fair bit. Yes, had to adapt to some different driving concepts!
Mind you, come and try cycling here through our winters! :) I'll still be out there in 1 or 2 degrees C as long as I can be sure there isn't too much ice.
@kmcyc you want to be secure and this is normal, i see lines ,this guy even post it to tubee....most families in greece have one relative dead from a moto...Mine too :P roads and the jungle rules are not safee.... Last time i had an accident with a car in the highway to athenss....A biggg holeee in the street covered with rain,no chance to go aside because i had cars next to me.If i was with the moto,i would be dead.
Sorry to hear about the death rate for bikers in Greece. :( I can well understand how it happens so often though. Poor road surface is a nightmare, especially if you are surrounded by cars that won't give you room to ride around craters like the one you describe. Glad to know you left your bike at home that day!
Yeah just about. I realised what was about to happen in the nick of time and hit the brakes. Had I gotten a bit further down the road I may have had an 'assisted dismount' but the pannier took the hit, not the bike (or me!)

Where is the line here?
Please dont get me wrong, but I a mgenuinnely confused.
1 - Filtering is perfectly LEGAL in the UK. Thats great, I do it myself all the time.
2 - UNDERTAKING is ILLEGAL
Where do you draw the line or is there no actual line?
Did you filter or undertake?
Does undertake mean moving too? I mean, was that car doing anythign wrong? Not really no, although he should have looked for sure. Im just confused.
