@Yu2Kal This is what alot of people are scared of. Actually its hard to cut the adams apple. For you to even do that you would need to put alot of pressure and do a sawing motion. The human skin is kinda thick. So even if you do nick your throat you will be fine.
I have a peculiar obsession for straight razors. What I really like about them is that using them requires such focuss and dexterity and all of a sudden shaving is no longer just another annoying chore, it's like a form of art, it's beautiful.
After the "art form" becomes muscle memory, it quickly becomes yet another annoying chore, I'm afraid. Most wander aimlessly for months, looking for another bathroom art form to fill the void. I was one of the lucky ones who found salvation. Most don't share my good fortune.
i still enjoy shaving with a straightrazor although shaving in general doesn't make me as excited as it did at first. and i am still learning how to get a great shave so its still a challenge.
the way the tracks progress are just like a serial killer's: first the classical music to calm the victim, next some mellow rock and last some psychotic metal to go on a killing spree!
i left the tap running lightly. i was preoccupied with the video taping. what i normally do is fill the sink 1/2 way and use the water there. sorry for "wasting" maybe 5L of water.
It's such a tranquil, soothing sound; almost like shaving by a creek in the middle of a forest with tall trees all around you. In this way, I justify my waste of water!
you can but if you get razor burn with these you're also likely to cut yourself deep so you learn pretty quick to knock it off and do things properly.
this can mean your blade is not sharp enough and/or that your technique is incorrect. when i first shaved with a new "shave ready" razor, i also sliced up my face. i then found out that it was not "shave ready". after i got into sharpening my razor myself i discovered that having a sharp blade is 1/2 the battle to a good shave (the other 1/2 is technique)
well i use disposable razors the wilkinson classics the ones barbers use. i always cutt myself bad under my chin the most sensitive area it might have been because i go against the grain. some videos on here say never go against the grain.

this is about the 5th vid about this that i have watched on this. i think the same guys that shave like this are the same guys that carry a throwing knife in a wrist or ankle holder every place they go. just in case of a ninja attack.
I just shaved with a straight razor for the first time and I cut myself over a dozen times. I sucked at it. It didn't seem to give me a close shave at all. My chin looks unshaven. I used good shaving cream and I applied it with a good boar hair brush. I made two passes. I used a straight razor that uses disposable blades. All it seemed to do was cut me instead of shaving me. I'm not sure if I'll try it again.
I've heard those disposable ones can have a tendency to nick more. The "Feather" brand razors are apparently crazy-sharp. maybe you wanna invest in a solid piece or maybe a Merkur barber pole.
Closer shave, cheaper, involves more talent which some people enjoy. some people, like me, enjoy shaving with a straight razor because it is calming, and makes me feel way more clean for some reason. hard to explain. invest a few hundred dollars in some shaving equipment, and you will see what i mean.
You know I was thinking about getting into using a straight blade but after watching the videos of men shaving, it looks like it's more time consuming and standard shaving is time consuming enough, let alone having to sharpen it for a couple minutes before each use. I think I'll just stick to safety blades.
You can try a double-edged safety razor or a straight razor that uses disposable blades - saves the time of sharpening, and still gives a much closer shave than a cartridge razor. The replacement blades are also incredibly cheap compared to Mach3, etc.
Go Green. It's cost effective and you get a better shave. Also I find that taking the time to pamper your face in this manner is relaxing and a great stress reliever. So many benefits from this way. As for safety blades, I'll tell you like my dear grand daddy used to tell me. " Haste makes waste".
Sadly, that's what you see in 99% of all straight shaving videos on youtube. Guys with very thin growth shave propably already shaved skin. They even look perfectly shaved before they start. This is the reason why it looks so easy.
The only guy with a beard on youtube is willypeter "Rasiermesser Rasur".
depends on the person however with a properly sharpened straight razor, properly prepared wiskers and proper use of shaving soap, its actually very gentle.
it works really good at stopping bleeding and some are even waterproof and it goes into the cut, so you can keep shaving without worrying the bleeding will start again :)
Wonderfully relaxing!!! =) Do you shave in the morning or at night? I usually do my shaves at night though if i have time in the morning I will do that. I am very new to the idea of straight razor shaving, I dont officially own a real straight razor (one you have to hone and strop) I use one like the barber, with a disposable blade, do you have any advice on how to shave sideburns?
That is amazing, I have blood all over my face from trying to shave just now hah, the neck is the worst part!
Any advice on how to keep your blade sharp? Mine seems to dull lots after each shave, I don't know how to hone it correctly. . And is it okay to use regular shaving cream?
it is ok to use regular shaving cream although it is unnessasary. a barber told me that you can shave using a straight razor by only appling hot water to your face.ask a barber to help end your ignorance of honing usually older guys help alot.
you can use regular stuff, just the real stuff and shaving soap are actually cheaper, since half of the cream actually stays in the can in aerosol cans.
do you have a strop?
if not, get one and you need at least a 8000 grit stone to sharpen, no choice unless you want to bleed to death.
best way to check if truely sharp is to take a strand of your head hair, hold it with two fingers and let it hang loosely sideways, then simply slowly chop it half, if you can do this slowly, it's good to go.
Ya, I have a strop, but I got it with the knife which was my grandfathers. So its super old, and kinda stiff. I think I will have to get a new one.
I just got my knife sharpened at a sword/knife store and it could almost cut as you are describing, but then I shaved once and its dull again. I tried stropping it, but I believe I made it worse. These things are touchy.
do it yourself instead of needing someone else to do it, it's their job to sharpen your blade, but it's not their face who's being shaved with it, so their sometimes sloppy at sharpening, just do it yourself and you'll feel more comfortable using a blade you sharpened instead of trusting the work of a sword sharpener.
a 8000 grit stone and a new strop is all you need unless you drop the blade edge on steel, then it's screwed unless your persistant in cleaning it up.
Well I got them to put an edge on it cause it was super dull originally. I tried using guitar fret board polish on the strop to reguivinate it, but it think you're right, and i will have to buy a new one.
This stone you speak of, you dont use that every shave, just when its getting real dull? thanks for the help.
he could have been done in 5 minutes, but he's committed to making his face smoother than your butt was when you were born. It's also to show people how to do it, he's probably faster when he's not filming himself.
I have been looking into getting a straight razor but are very confused with cost. Some nashvilleknife website is asking hundreds of dollars for kits. Many razors they have are almost 100$ just for the razor. Yet on ebay they are reasonably priced. Any recommendation on a good razor?
Yes, the knife in your kitchen .....!!! Sorry , dude i have no idea . Have you tried asking your Barber or some good barber shops, those seem to be a good idea !!
Great video. That last pass when you went ATG on the upper lip I cannot do, so kudos on that dude! I believe I read somewhere that that pass is called the fools pass as one could inadvertently slice up right into the nose. Ouch.
aww man. you call that a chin nick? i was expecting a bloodbath. i got a chin nick that took 30 minutes to stop bleeding, although it was more of a slice. haha.
Props on the straight razor! I am going to get back into using one. My grandfather showed me how. One suggestion I would have is to try and work your way into longer strokes. I use to do the same thing you do, my grandfather called it potato peelng..lol. Once stopped that I rarely nicked myself. Very cool vid.
Only 13 strokes to shave a face ideally and the shavee stays completely relaxed.
We had to practice honing & stropping a lot - you can get disposable blade (ugly) st. razors now
NuBs u won't cut yrself (starting out) Use your natural instincts.
I just remembered the facial expression on my gorgeous new boyfriend in the bathtub when I flourished my straight razor and said I'd give him a shave. He was so yummy but I'm going off track now. I am a woman, fag-haters.
is it possible to shave with a very sharp knife? I have a folding knife by a company called spyderco, and man it is so sharp it will just slide through a piece of paper like butter. I was wondering if I could use it in the same way as a straight razor in order to see if I like this kind of shaving?
it is possible but HIGLY dangerous, the blades on straight razors are obviously very sharp but more importantly very thin unlike a pocket knife the angle you need to shave properly is very difficult to get from the short fat blade on a knife. i wouldn't recommend shaving with a knife.
I really enjoy masturbating and looking at my child porn collection while I shave, it helps me concentrate and puts me in a laid back mood so I'm not too nervous while using my straight edge.
Do you shave every day with the straight blade? I have read that most people don't. Do you just skip shaving a day, or do you use a disposable/electric razor on other days? Also, where did you learn to shave with a straight blade? Did someone teach you, or did you get a book or find a website? I want to get started with it but I have no idea what I need (like that brush for instance) or how to do it. Thanks in advance!
Don't need the brush really. But most people who go through the trouble of getting the old-fashioned blade like the old brush. You don't even need the blade to use the brush. I shave every other day with the straightblade, if you want my word in. Other days, disposable with brush. This guy is a great teacher, good vid.
the brush is the second most important part of the process! the brush forces the soap into every crack and crevice of your face. And ditch the disposable, otherwise theres no point using the straight blade
yes. put your two palms together. spread your fingers and put the fingers of one hand between those of the other. now bend your fingers of both hands out in opposite directions a little bit. thats what the edge looks like after the blade has sat for a bit. stropping pushing the metal back into place like moving your fingers back into alignment, causing a sharper edge. but this is not sharpening. over time the edge will become dull and you need a stone to do the actual sharpening.
hey, ive watched a few guys shaving on youtube, and everyone sorta shaves the cheek area aswell, I currently don't shave my cheeks but the hair there is sort of dark and noticeable, do u recommend I just shave it along with everything else, or do i hav to pluck em all, or wax or something? because im afraid of being MONKEY MAN, if i actually shave the cheek area and then it gets as coarse as the beard area :S .
dont worry about it. shave your cheek too and just keep your whole face in good shaved condition. one thing i have found is my wiskers are softer after they grow in from shaving with a straight razor compared to a disposable or electric.
Please, what music is what it sounds like first?. I love it.
Thanks in advance.

a 8000 grit stone and a new strop is all you need unless you drop the blade edge on steel, then it's screwed unless your persistant in cleaning it up.
flamedrag18 2 years ago
Well I got them to put an edge on it cause it was super dull originally. I tried using guitar fret board polish on the strop to reguivinate it, but it think you're right, and i will have to buy a new one.
This stone you speak of, you dont use that every shave, just when its getting real dull? thanks for the help.

I dont care how cool u think u are by blade shaveing but if it takes you 11 mins... dont bother.
musixxxman 3 years ago
he could have been done in 5 minutes, but he's committed to making his face smoother than your butt was when you were born. It's also to show people how to do it, he's probably faster when he's not filming himself.

Dexduzdiz 3 years ago
Also, why do it three times? Once was not enough to get a clean shave?
TMAXXPUNISHER 3 years ago
Three times, first with the grain, second across the grain, third against (gasp) the grain.

I have been looking into getting a straight razor but are very confused with cost. Some nashvilleknife website is asking hundreds of dollars for kits. Many razors they have are almost 100$ just for the razor. Yet on ebay they are reasonably priced. Any recommendation on a good razor?
TMAXXPUNISHER 3 years ago
Yes, the knife in your kitchen .....!!! Sorry , dude i have no idea . Have you tried asking your Barber or some good barber shops, those seem to be a good idea !!

Great video. That last pass when you went ATG on the upper lip I cannot do, so kudos on that dude! I believe I read somewhere that that pass is called the fools pass as one could inadvertently slice up right into the nose. Ouch.
seannottingham 3 years ago
aww man. you call that a chin nick? i was expecting a bloodbath. i got a chin nick that took 30 minutes to stop bleeding, although it was more of a slice. haha.

Props on the straight razor! I am going to get back into using one. My grandfather showed me how. One suggestion I would have is to try and work your way into longer strokes. I use to do the same thing you do, my grandfather called it potato peelng..lol. Once stopped that I rarely nicked myself. Very cool vid.

nothing against this kind of shaving at all, but i'm damn glad i just keep myself rugged looking, and women like me better that way. lucky me : )
nightowl4064 3 years ago
In barber school we learned:

I was wondering if I could use it in the same way as a straight razor in order to see if I like this kind of shaving?
jacobssandy 3 years ago
NO!!!
Igacek 3 years ago
In theory maybe. It's hard enough to get a carbon steel sharp enough, but stainless is even worse.
tyoberg 3 years ago
I say do it. prove em wrong. prove Darwin wrong too.

Darwin didn't factor in the power of ingenooitee into his equation of the world.
jacobssandy 3 years ago
it is possible but HIGLY dangerous, the blades on straight razors are obviously very sharp but more importantly very thin unlike a pocket knife the angle you need to shave properly is very difficult to get from the short fat blade on a knife. i wouldn't recommend shaving with a knife.

shaving with a straight razor is an art!

I really enjoy masturbating and looking at my child porn collection while I shave, it helps me concentrate and puts me in a laid back mood so I'm not too nervous while using my straight edge.

Hello, I am very new to straight blade shaving.
Thanks in advance!
damaband41 3 years ago
Don't need the brush really. But most people who go through the trouble of getting the old-fashioned blade like the old brush. You don't even need the blade to use the brush. I shave every other day with the straightblade, if you want my word in. Other days, disposable with brush. This guy is a great teacher, good vid.
thewhoppinator 3 years ago
the brush is the second most important part of the process! the brush forces the soap into every crack and crevice of your face. And ditch the disposable, otherwise theres no point using the straight blade
Spaxel90 3 years ago
Masterfully executed! What is the angle you're shaving at? Great soundscore.

If you use a strop on a daily basis, do you still need to buy a stone?
Latzz4Flex 3 years ago
yes. put your two palms together. spread your fingers and put the fingers of one hand between those of the other. now bend your fingers of both hands out in opposite directions a little bit. thats what the edge looks like after the blade has sat for a bit. stropping pushing the metal back into place like moving your fingers back into alignment, causing a sharper edge. but this is not sharpening. over time the edge will become dull and you need a stone to do the actual sharpening.
plexuss 3 years ago
Yes the stone is for sharpening the razor while the strop is really for making the blade flat and completely strait.

hey, ive watched a few guys shaving on youtube, and everyone sorta shaves the cheek area aswell, I currently don't shave my cheeks but the hair there is sort of dark and noticeable, do u recommend I just shave it along with everything else, or do i hav to pluck em all, or wax or something? because im afraid of being MONKEY MAN, if i actually shave the cheek area and then it gets as coarse as the beard area :S .
bigymac22 3 years ago
dont worry about it. shave your cheek too and just keep your whole face in good shaved condition. one thing i have found is my wiskers are softer after they grow in from shaving with a straight razor compared to a disposable or electric.
