  • s&w is better.. for example 627 with 8 shoots.. ;-)

  • @ironfreak225 That is NOt a guarentee. What i said before IS a guanentee. : )

  • Hello rugersix. The fellow in the bear picture was walking his dogs at his homeplace in Alaska when this Kodiak charged out at them in a deadly mood. He said he only got off a couple of shots because the handloads he was carrying locked the cylinder when the remaining bullets jumped forward due to their insufficient crimp! Says a lot for the value of practice, huh?

  • @axishans axishans..........THANKS for sharing that! I was hoping someone would know the story! WoW! Sounds like he got very lucky! The value of practice to make sure your reloads are up to par...yeah no kidding! I think I would opt for factory ammunition! Thanks again for the info!!! =)

  • If you had to fire that thing in the dark in a room with walls in a home defense situation, not only would you temporarily blind yourself for a significant amout of time, but you would also not be able to hear for a while.

If you missed, your opponent would have his way with you. Unless you used .44 specials in it. ; )

  • @Poseidon500 LOL! There's a great point!!! I have yet to purchase any or shoot any

.44 Specials! They are if not as much more than .44 Magnums!!! Thanks for the comment!

  • @rugersix Well, a .44 magnum is overkill for home defense. Besides, your bullet would be so powerful it would go through walls possibly killing an innocent.

If you could find .44 specials hollow points, that would be ideal. But of course, you would not want to be in that situation anyway.

Common sense prevails every time man.

    Peace.

  • love that gun, got a chance to shoot a friend's when I was bear hunting in northern N.H. I'm 13, and people make all these 20 sec long video up people getting knocked around by this gun, but if you just lean forward, and get two hands on the thing, recoil isn't bad at all. Like I said, I'm only 13, and I want one. = )

  • @SuperR3volver Well you will have a long wait to get one wont you! =) They are indeed very nice!

  • great vid was looking into one of them also

  • @psychadaze Thanks! I need to get out and do some more shooting!

  • Rugersix...

As always...a very informative and entertaining set of videos on your Bruiser Alaskan. (There is another 'word' for ya..LOL)

Got any video where you are just firing .44 Specials with it?

Some comparisons? Handling of the gun between the two different rounds?

Price per round comparisons? (Updated to today's pricing)

Maybe even a Side-By-Side comparisons with ALL your Ruger Revolvers on the range.

That would be quite enjoyable to watch.

    Thanks again.

  • @OldDood Planning an update video later where I go out in the fied and shoot some different loads! Stay tuned!

  • @rugersix

Not to sound pushy or anything but, it's been two months.

Have you taken this Bad Boy out and fired some .44 Specials with it yet?

I had fun showing this vid to my daughter (she is 19 and interested in shooting).

She was astounded at how much beefier it is then my SP101 .357.

I want one! This would need a Hand Made Holster and not a store bought one.

I am 55 (thin)and I know I can carry that concealed. My SP101 is hidden in a IWB.

My IWB holster sits very low, cross draw. Hard to see

  • @thunderboltxkid No the weather here has been bad and the holidays are upon us so standing down for the moment. Plus .44 specials are expensive!!! I don't have any yet!

I will add that the Hunter holster is very nice for the gun!

I think its cool your daughter is interested in shooting...start her out with what she can handle and is comfortable with she can work up to the bigger guns later if she wants! =) Try to get a new vid up before the end of the month if posible!

  • @rugersix

That Thunderboltkid post happens to be my DAUGHTER's ACCOUNT.

She was logged into MY PC when I just replied as HER. (grrrrr)

I just chewed her out for using my computer and not logging out her accounts.

A big pet peeve of mine...

So that was me asking you about shooting .44 Specials.

  • @OldDood No problem I've done the same here with my sons account LOL =)

  • I mean that I've enjoyed shooting my Ruger Alaskan .44 Magnum. Jejejeje! My bad. But yeah, get that Decelerator Grip and post it to see what you think of it. Try it!

  • Hey wus up? Even though I miss shootin the Taurus Raging Bull .454 Casull Hand Cannon (better quality than the Super Redhawk .454 because Ruger don't use reinforced Extra Large Frames nor muzzle breaks) and the Desert Eagle Tiger .50 AE Hand Cannon, I have to say I've enjoyed it. I fired 320 Grains of Hard Cast Slugs from DoubleTap and it works wonders, but I use the Pachmayr Decelerator Grip because that one is more comfortable to shoot. I use it now for self-defense. You should buy that grip.

  • Thanx, I am enjoying it. The Barska GLX Green Laser is actuall a Green Dot Sight like the US Military use at night. A Red Dot Sight you see a Red Dot. But a Green Laser Sight, like the Barska GLX Green Laser (very high quality product), not only do you see the advantage of the Green Dot in the day, but as well, at night you see the Green Dot and the Green Beam from the Barska GLX Green Laser Sight. That's why I am enjoying a lot of the Ruger Alaskan M44.

  • Oh, I forgot to mention that I put a Weaver Rail on the top of the receiver because I installed a Barska GLX Green Laser Sight on it. I made the Ruger Alaskan M44 a true Combat Hand Cannon. Jejejeje. You are right, it is bankful tight, and built like a tank!

  • Jejejej! No, don't get me wrong. I love it being extremely heavy at 46 oz. It's just good for home defense against criminals, even though the Ruger Alaskan M44, chambered in the .44 Magnum Hand Cannon Slug. The recoil: I hardly feel it, it's the muzzle flip and you need to recovery from that, even when you shoot a Cor-Bon 300 Grain Soft Point. That's a perfect load for me for home defense. For self- defense, Taurus PT 917, a 9mm Handgun will do. The Ruger AlaskanM44, a perfect stout Hand Cannon.

  • @Onimusha584 Oh...I didn't get you wrong my reference to the weight was in regards to the heavy recoil...left that part out! I totally agree with you on the hand cannon issue! It most certainly is! Glad you got one and sounds like you are enjoying it...I don't think I've ever seen one of these with optics before!

  • @rugersix

Who is the group on the video Alaskan 1,2 help me out with this.

    By the way great videos.

    brucear77

  • Hey Rugersix. I have finally obtained the Ruger Alaskam M44 in the .44 Magnum Hand Cannon and is built like a tank. Ruger knows goes very well with the caliber and knows how to built the .454 Casull Hand Cannon better than Smith & Wesson. I shoot Cor-Bon 305 Grains Nose Penetrator Slugs and the Hogue Rubber Tamer Grip does tame the recoil a lot better than Smith & Wesson. I love it, except not a good choice for self-defense against criminals since it weighs 46 oz. I will buy the Taurus PT 917.

  • @Onimusha584 Congrats on you new purchase! It is indeed a lot of revolver and does pack some weight, but in this case i think its a good thing! =)

  • You still lovin the Alaskan?

  • just got myself a .44 7.5" SRH.

and i think i also inadvertantly got myself into handloading!

i intend to shoot this gun a lot and the press and suplies will pay for itself in the first 500 rounds, i think.

  • Great Video! Very detailed about the Alaskan. How does it handle the more powerful 44 mag loads?

  • @DougNRA Thanks!

    NOW...that's a great question!

I have to find that one out!!!!! LOL!

That might make an interesting vid! =)

  • Tell that to the next bear you meet out in the bush ; )

  • Good God the old .44mag! The Ruger SP101 in .357 is more than enough for me!

  • @ShamrockDan101 Yup...this is pretty much my MAX! lol

Actually the .357 mag is my all time favorite round.

  • Bit the bullet and returned my 629 for the Alaskan .44. I'm glad I did, even though I lost a few bucks for the restock fee. They didn't charge me the full 20%, but close to it. Unfortunately, Keith was gone at a gun show, so I had to deal with Mr. Rubberneck the Growler. Oh well. Keith's Sporting Goods is not known for customer service, but I have always found Keith to be cool. Some of other guys behind the counter wear their testosterone on their sleeves. Take care, and happy shootin!

  • LOL....Got bit did ya!

    You won't be disappointed! =)

  • thank you for your advice. Yes, the Classic, despite being lightly used, was a good deal, at least for a retailer to offer. It is in very good shape and hardly used at all. Hearing you say it's a good deal makes harder to go ask for credit. They will probably slap me with a 20% restock fee.If I order the Alaskan new there is a chance they won't. I guess that's what it comes down to: if they don't charge the restock, then I might order the Alaskan.

  • Great video, by the way. It's interesting how you pretty much went through the same rationale as I did, only I walked away with the 629 because I hadn't heard about the Ruger Alaskan yet, and the shorter barrels made me nervous because I felt like I needed the advantage of more accuracy. All I knew about was the Ruger Redhawk in a 4" barrel when I just bought the Classic for $600. It's in great shape with the box and all the extras. My gut is telling me to take it back for the Alaskan.

  • Still what you got is a SWEET deal!!!!

You might be able to turn it for a bit of a profit if you put it up on the market! Truly it comes down to what best fits your need...if your gut instinct is Alaskan? Well then you know what to do! List pros and cons of both and then decide. Thanks for your comments! =)

  • I am not an experience marksman by any stretch. I've been plinking with an old S&W .357 Mag for a few months. I have hands about the size of yours. The grips on that Alaskan are way better for me than the Ruger in a 4" barrel with the metal strip running down the back. I would rather own the Alaskan, but I'm curious about the accuracy as compared with the 629 in a 5". I know the extra barrel length will make a difference, but that Alaskan packs well on your hip. Argh! Any advice?

  • Welcome to the club neither am I!!!! Not by a long shot!!!! lol =) Accuracy is usually better so it seems with a longer barrel but that's not necessarily true. I really have not done accuracy testing with mine and need to. The Alaskan with that Hunter Holster packs like a dream surprising very comfortable. I did buy a thicker stronger belt to carry it with.

  • I have a 629 classic 5" barrel that I just picked up used. It's in great shape. I have not fired it yet because I am starting to have second thoughts. I have really been eyeballing the Ruger Alaskan that you have. I mainly will use my .44 as a backpacking gun to keep in case I have a run-in with bear or cougars. I hike and hang out in some rough country near tons of elk and the bulls also pose a risk. I think for packing all day, your Alaskan is better. I am curious about the accuracy.

  • Well you got a smok'n deal my friend...and truth be known I would have done the same at that price! I was trying for used but they seemed to get snapped up in a hurry! The 5"

barrel would be my only deterrent as I like shorter barrels to begin with, but still $600!

  • Great video! I appreciate the detailed description. How accurate is the gun? Do you give up a lot of accuracy b/c of the length of barrel? I am thinking of the 454. Do you think it is too much for the frame? Is there some accuracy difference in 454 and 44 mag?

  • Thanks! Good questions! I really can't answer the accuracy q's between the two calibers as I only have the 44 mag and have not shot it enough to test for accuracy!

However, as far as the frame of this gun handling the .454 Casull ...NO PROBLEM!!!! It's a TANK! =)

  • Got the gun from buds online for $720 delivered. This is one monster revolver and I just love this gun to death. Took it out to my indoor range and ripped off a 50 round box. Needless to say the people on the range were on notice while this gun was in the house. My word for this gun - M1 Tank of a revolver. Okay, more than one word but this thing kicks ass

  • LOL!!!

    Good Story!!!!!!

    YES!

    Indeed!!!! =)

  • This was on my shortlist for wilderness defense. Just want something to wear on my side while fishing. I think you sold me on the holster too.

  • Well put it on your TOP LIST!!!! =}

You'll love it the minute you place your hands on it! Thanks for watching the vids I appreciate it!

  • Then it would appear that I have made up my mind. For a self-defense 44 Magnum against criminals, who would do harm, I will buy the Alaskan 44, thanx to your words of wisdom from your video. Once I put up my own video of the Ruger Alaskan 44, I will mention YouTube blogger "rugersix" was the one who advised me to buy the Alaskan 44. Good work on the video and thanx for helping me decide what kind of 44 Magnum I want.

  • LOL=D

    Thanks!

Let me say yuo will completely understand one yuo place this in your hands! I'm still thrilled to death with this gun! =)

  • Jejejejeje! I see. I forget to mention I have these 4 Combat Hand Cannons: From Smith & Wesson, Performance Center 10 1/2" Barrel M500, Performance Center 10 1/2" Barrel M460, Performance Center 7 1/2" Barrel M454, and the Magnum Research Desert Eagle Tiger M50, which is Titanium Gold Tiger Striped (M=Model abbreviated). But you said on this video that the Ruger Alaskan 44 is more heavier than the 5" 629 Classic... Does that mean the Alaskan 44 has more tougher steel than the 5" 629 Classic?

  • I would say the Alaskan is a lot more gun!

It is built much more stout then the infamous S&W 629! And...I like both models quite well.

  • Nice! I've never fired a 44 Magnum before in my life. I've only fired 4 of the most powerful production Hand Cannon Slugs: The 500 S&W Hand Cannon, the 460 S&W Hand Cannon, the 454 Casull Hand Cannon, and the 50 AE Hand Cannon. Hopefully I can get the Ruger Alaskan 44 for self-defense. It's hard to find one here in Miami.

  • Well you are wat ahead of me I stop at .454 Casall being the most power packed handgun round that I've fired. =)

The .44Mag is a nice ballance not to small and not too big.

  • How much did you pay for your Ruger Alaskan 44 Magnum? And did you buy used or factory new?

  • I think I answered that in part one? Umm...bought it new and paid around $760 if I rembemer correctly.

  • thats a beautiful gun. That looks even more robust than the famous S&W 629 trail boss! What a strong looking gun. Not sure I would want to get it in .454 Casull though haha

  • it's a real beauty!!!! =]

  • Nice video bro - I just bought one of these and waiting for it to be delivered. I like that you show the holsters as well, Well done

  • Thanks my friend I appreciate that.

What caliber are you getting???? =]

  • More shooting, less talking, and no more corny body language. PLEASE

  • Wow! Anything else?????

  • hey great vid, i don't know if i missed it but it would have been nice to have some ballistics info with that short barrel, and was there a nice box that it had come in??? thanks again 5/5

  • I'm not the best on ballistics...sorry! It did come with a hard plastic case typical of Ruger revolvers! Thanks for watching and for the rating! =]

  • I got a Ruger Super Redhawk with a 7.5'' brl! Do u have or know anyone with a Semi-Auto .44 Mag?? Reason I ask is I'm looking for one.

  • I sure don't! You can get a Desert Eagle chambered in 44 mag if I'm not mistaken!

  • Love your vids Rugersix. I was also looking for a .44 Mag. The Classic 629 and the Ruger Redhawk 4" were also my down to the line choices.. My hands are medium sized and I believe there is a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in my near future. Thanks for your videos.

  • Thanks Lone58!

I sure love this purchase...much better than I thought it would be! =]

  • I have a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum

its a great gun and its fun to shoot. But looking at the Ruger Super Red Hawk Alaskan .44 Magum I have thoughts of adding that to my collection.

  • I was glad when I finally did! The short barrel kept me away for awhile, but after handling it I liked it much better than the S&W 629 I was looking at!

  • Hogue makes good grips.

  • Yes they do!

    The range is well....okay!

I hate all the politics that come with it!

  • Heck of nice Range....

  • Pure Ruger. Good Stuff.

  • Thanks!

  • Great vids Harry! I love that gun. If it was available 10 years ago when I bought my S&W 629 Classic, for bear protection in the hills of WV, I would have probably purchased that instead. ;-) My 629 has a 6-1/2 barrel and I do love it, but for carry in the hills, the 2-1/2 inch barrel would be nice.

    Brian

  • That is a long barrel for a side arm in the hills!!!! Still the 629 is a great 44 magnum!

    Thanks for watching!

  • I loved the 2 part series Harry! Great close up shots of the revolver!!

  • THANKS my good friend! =]

  • Great review bud I need one of those.Great bear gun

  • Thanks! Yeah they are pretty darn cool!

  • Hey man thats a freaking nice revolver and not to mention that nice looking tan leather holster, just an awesome combo. enjoy it man.5/5

  • Thank You...I like the combo myself! =]

  • Thanks for another great video Rugersix.

I have come to believe that a solid 44 magnum is a great emergency tool in the woods; Three successive shots signals for distress, as well as flares (yes actual mini flares) and tracer rounds to assist in locating. Mini shot shells to harvest small game for emergency food, and of course the full power 44 magnum loads to stop any living creature in North America.

Add to all that it being a solidly built stainless revolver and it should last a century.

  • Thank you for your thorough and concise comments! It should at leat out live me! =]

  • Hand Cannon!

  • YES IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =D

  • I've been planning to buy a Super Blackhawk for hiking but this may be a better choice. Thanks for sharing~

  • Thanks for watching sootch00

  • There's something very American about big powerful revolvers like Super Redhawk Alaskan. It's partly the Dirty Harry thing but its also the fact revolvers like the .357mag which was so very much a part of American Law Enforcement for many decades. Here in Australia .357mag revolvers are still being used by Police. Great video.

  • Nice comment and good info MR PETE!!!!! Thank You!

  • Yeah!!! Really Rock Gun!!

  • LOL!!!!! =D

    Greetings my Russian friend!

  • I had an opportunity to handle one of these not too long ago. Great feel to it, it seems well-balanced, even with the shorter barrel. Cool vid!

  • Yes well balanced is a great term!

    Thanks!

  • Cool gun! What a beast! Very well made video again! I already saw them both but I wasn't logged in so I comment now ;)

  • Thank You Willem!!!! =]

  • Very, very nice love the gun. 5strs Keep the vids coming.

  • Thanks my friend!

  • Love the new revolver, Ruger!

I don't really like how the trigger is exposed on the holster, though.

  • Thanks Husky me toooooooooooooo!

  • The word I think of is Magnaport. A man after my own heart. Leather and a wheelgun. Kickin it "old School"! Roll your own, and start with Hornady XTP 300 grain JHP over some 2400. A dozen of those will cure your need for magnum time for awhile. LOL!

  • Excellent description AA550..... =]

  • Awesome!

    How's that kick ruger ?

    LOL *****

  • It not as bad as I thought it would be! =]

  • very light antitank weapon. lol.

  • Ha Ha Ha!!!! =]

    Indeed!

  • that thing is a goddamned handcannon. and i love it haha.

  • another great review by rugersix and that is one sexy revolver i tell you and i dont think any one would be glad to see that pointed at them in your house haha

  • Nice glad you went with Ruger! God what a great company!

  • Hey Carson!

Thanks...I just have a thing for Ruger Revolvers I guess! =]

  • I do too because they are built to LAST, when you compare a taurus to a ruger you can feel and see a difference in craftmanship and how it was built. Ruger are just great!

  • I got my SRH as a birthday present for my self, but i got mine with long 9,5" barrel. Very nice gun. Maybe I will buy Alaskan too some day :P

  • I see it can double as a cane when your not shooting it!!!!!! =]

    That is one Looooong Barrel!!!

  • Well, you see, here in Finland we can't carry. So size doesn't matter. When I first saw my revolver it looked so hillarious I just had to get it. :D

  • Ahhh...Finland! Cool!

Thank God it;s not Sweden!!! LOL =]

  • I'm a big fan of OLDER Smith and Wesson revolvers, but when I buy new revolvers, I buy Ruger. You really can't go wrong with their products.

Among the many Ruger products I own, I have an OLD Security Six .357 revolver. It's one of the most comfortable handguns I've ever picked up, and it shoots like something out of this world.

Good buy man; I hope you like it!

  • Well so far I'm totally pleased with it!

I also have a classic Ruger a Security-Six I'll be doing a gun review on later.

    Thanks for watching!

  • Mon dieu !!!

That things a monster......and so is the Alaskan...LOL.

    Comme d'habitude, super vid.

  • Yeah...I agree with you! =]

  • great video :)

  • Thanks Rover!

  • Well I guess if you ran out of ammunition you could hit someone over the head with that cannon.

  • No kidding it doubles as a boat anchor! LOL =)

  • i wonder how the 454 casull shoots

  • Me too it's a mighty powerful round, but one thing is for sure this gun can handle it!

  • That's a gaping barrel! Scary .. :) Have fun ! Btw thanks again for the Cap ! I've been wearing it to the range and even cassualy :D

  • Hey Bart!

    Your most welcome!!!!!!

    Gapping Barrel indeed! =]

  • great vids! good looking firearm, nice work rugersix!

  • Thanks Rich!!!!!

I appreciate you watching the vids!

  • Too short a barrel to be imported to Canada :(

Guess I'll have to stick to my 12-1/2" barrel 12 gauge for bear defense ....

A mystery remains: How the heck do they hold on to the barrel so they can screw it INTO the frame?? Or is it press fitted?

  • Hmm...It's a no for Canada????

I can't believe it! You can get a Super Redhawk though with a 4" barrel though.

I'm guessing it's threaded on but would have to look at an exploded diagram.

  • The minimum barrel length has to be 105mm (just over 4 inches) to be let into Canada for civilian purchase.

  • That I didn't know...thanks for adding that tid-bit of info!

  • its a nice heafty "slab" of steel.you feel in command, as i do when i carry my s&w 686.

  • The .44 special sounds like a good option for home defense.

  • Yeah...but where do you find it? I have not seen that round on the shelves or available on line for months!!!!!!

  • Have you looked at the sportsmansguide?

  • The sportsmans guide will have some .44 special available on Nov 27th

  • YES I have ...I usually buy from them and actually have some ammo on B/O right now!!!

  • Another great pair of vids on a very interesting gun. Thanks.

  • Thank You for watching!!!!!!

  • So it's not approved for export, eh? That's a pity. I think it would be a great success.

It reminds me of a knuckle duster mated with a sledge hammer. It's a beast alright.

  • Sorry Ted the barrel is to short for those Kiwi Govenors over there...the lords of the land! =} This can be shipped to Norway!

Holy smokes can yuo imagine getting pistol whipped with one of these????

    Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i enjoyed part 2 thanks for making it.

  • I appreciate you watching it! =]

  • very nice

  • Thank you Chris!

  • Please tell me this is your new CCW.

  • But how? This gargantuan gun, wide weapon formidable firearm, could only be concealed by a black hole that prevented the light reflecting off of it to ever reach the retinas of all whom it may concern.

And that's why it rules. Imagine the Redhawk in a tiny caliber. Cheaper to shoot, but so hilariously ironic...

  • i loved the alaskan when it first came out.i want one in 454. only because i have a lot of 45LC ammo i would only use the 454casull to sho- off at the range .lol nice video.

  • I wish I had lots of 45LC ammo right now!!! I can't even buy it right now! So my Vaquero sits quietly waiting for the supply to catch the demand! =]

  • Words that come to my mind?

It doesn't look silly like that Taurus Judge..

  • I agree with that!

  • 5* for that one....that was a good one!!!! =)

  • Reminds me of a tank, just one you can hold in your hand.

  • YES!!!!!

    Exactlly!

  • Thank you for doing this review.

I do have one thought regarding your holster. I'm concerned about a carrying a revolver with an uncovered trigger guard. Shouldn't any carry holster have a covered trigger guard to avoid accidents? Also, I think for like $10 more you could get a Milt Sparks custom holster. Thanks, again, for the review. I love these.

  • I see your point, but it might be a concern if this had a hairpin trigger pull! It takes a good pull to fire this gun in double-action.

There are other holster choices of course that would meet yuor concern regarding the exposed trigger guard. Thanks for the comment! =]

  • i heard sarah palin carries this in her purse

  • That I would love to see!!!!

    LOL!

  • damn man, got me the alaskan in 454 Casull and now your going to make me buy this one too

  • LOL!!!

    If you got one of these in the powerful .454Casull that's plenty!!!!!! =}

  • Rogue makes great grips. That is what is on your very nice revolver.

  • Hogue Tamer Mon-Grip discussed it more in part one! =]

  • I like the leather. quality.

  • Yes...it's nice!

  • Comment removed

  • I did answer both of those questions in this vid. For the Alaskan $785 The Winchester Ammo was $32 for a box of 50.

  • I guess you should be called dirty harry from now on hahaha

  • Absolutely!!!!

    Ha Ha Ha!!!!! =D

  • You could drive a bus down that barrel....Sweet!!!

  • LOL!!!!

    I think you just might be able to! =}

  • i shop at a store called johney's sport shop in eagle lake texas lowest prices on fire arms youll ever see

  • We need a gun shop like that up here!!!!!!!!

  • Heck yea Harry!!! Love this thing!

  • It's just ...GREAT!!!! =]

Nice to finally add a .44 magnum and it's a GOOD ONE!

    Thanks Hi-Cap!

  • My friend carries a .454 for Boar defense around his house. Crazy gun.

  • I don't blame him!!! =)
