@aarfeld lol!!! Aren't "nice" and "Manishevitz" mutually exclusive??? But then again, even the smell of tequila makes my stomach go woozy... I'd rather have Manishevitz any day! (By the spoonful, like any other cough syrup...)
.
I'm not Jewish, but you can't beat Jewish music! (The wine's a different story...) My grad school advisor was in a klesmer band, and that was AWESOME music! You can't just sit there and not smile when you hear that stuff! (BTW, he was my "have a tequila" source.)
Outstanding!!! This song brings back great memories of when my dad and I used to listen to this tune over and over and over and over again... and I still LOVE it!! Awesome posting, thanks! -Matt
yes but what people don't realize is that playing these songs on a typical guitar with typical strings is also a lot easier then playing dicks guitar with his strings which range from 16p to 60w and are wound very tightly. people refer to them as things like bridge cables I saw one surf guitar player say man that's like playing barbed wire. I have seen other guitar players try dicks guitar and shake their wrist and say man that hurts and dick makes the strings look like spaghetti
if you want that strong attacking sound you need at least a 56w for the low e. 58 or 60 is even better. also a 1.5mm or 2mm pick is really good. i posted a vid of me doing this on acoustic bass. wicked thick strings
When I heard DD I never heard of Hava Nagila before. I played it to a neighbor like as if it was never heard of but she knew of the original gansters way before I did
Dick Dale played his guitar like an oud, using a turkey quill as his pick, and he played it upside down. Very unique sound and overloaded with reverb, just like any surf should be.
Dale was born to a Lebanese father and Among his early musical influences was his uncle, an oud player performing belly dance music. Much of his early music shows a Middle Eastern influence
dude for the record Dick used to pay the Beach Boys 5 dollars a show to open up for him and the members of that band watched his live shows before they ever started performing themselves
From where I sit, as a player, his technique isn't exactly textbook perfect. Then again, Hendrix was far from perfect technically too. Same with BB King.
His tremolo picking is as good as it gets though.
There are plenty of better technicians out there, but very few better musicians. Everybody who plays seriously should listen to Dick Dale and how he puts it all together. There are few better.

Technically, he's not that great.. this playing isn't very taxing on the fretting hand. You do need some picking stamina, though.
He's a very important player in guitar history and he wrote some great music, but the greatest technicians on the guitar are mostly metal players from the 80s and later. Many of them are influenced by Richie Blackmore who himself has some Dick Dale to his playing.
Check out Paul Gilbert or Michael Romeo to see further reaches of what the guitar can do.

Well, to be honest, the tricky part is just playing it fast - the actual notes aren't tremendously difficult.
I mean, you can learn Misirlou in about 30 seconds even if you can't play guitar. Playing it as fast that, though, is tricky...
