Amtrak P32's can withdraw third rail power, But its electric shoe is different from MNRR. MNRR Genesis and MU's shoe draw power from the bottom of the third rail and Amtrak draw power from top just like LIRR and NYCT. Since they can't operate diesel in NYC, MNRR provided towing service for Amtrak to operate trains out of GCT, your video shock me that this amtrak train is operating without MNRR towing it.
Question. I thought MNRR have to tow amtrak trains casue its P32AC-DM can't withdraw power from the thrid rail, how come this one operate with out Metro North P32?
Some trains went to Penn the long way round, via Mott Haven junction, the New Haven Line, and the Hell gate, coupling another locomotive to the rear at New Rochelle
The main line south of Spuyten Duyvil goes straight down to Grand Central Terminal - which is how it was built by the New York Central many moons ago. At Spuyten Duyvil (which is one stop north of this station) Amtrak trains switch on to the line that continues to run parallel on the shore of the Hudson in Manhattan down to Pennsylvania Station. Since the switch was being worked on that weekend, some trains had to run out of GCT.
Yonkers is one of three Amtrak stops on the Hudson Line along with Croton-Harmon and Poughkeepsie. As I mentioned before - that very weekend there was special service for select Empire Corridor trains out of GCT due to switch work at Spuyten-Duyvil! This train was simply passing by Marble Hill - it did not stop. It was going straight from Albany (via Croton-Harmon, Yonkers, etc.) to GCT.
"murjax", the red "bar" you're talking about isn't a bar. It's a dump hose they have to have hooked up on the back of the train. It simply hooks up to the air hose on one end and the other has a valve that allows the conductor to dump the train in case of emergency.
Air brakes - one of the first things they teach you in conductor school. All railroad conductors must have vast knowledge of air brakes in order to be on the road.

@acela2107
That's the first I hear about that. If they can't draw third rail power, then how do they operate underground into Penn Station?
