  • A by gone era. Before my time as well. Wonderful color piece of history. Thanks for posting.

  • you gramma is hot

  • Thanks for posting. I worked for Eastern but only as a Ramp man at La Guardia back 58' so this film bring back great memories for me.

  • That Stewardess at the beginning might have been my Mom! So cool!

  • Im 17 now and I see DC-7s and Connies on occasion, I am an aviation enthusiast. But i just cant begin to imagine what it must of been like back then to travel on aircraft like these. I mean air travel is now fast jets and such. Also to see Miami airport like this is kind of funny because I drive down there time to time and its such a hugh airport.

  • Wow, what a great video - really enjoyed it and the music along with it is fantastic - much thanks

  • Hey Nick...thanks for posting. I flew on Connies out of Charlotte, NC all the time. When we moved North we went on a Connie, and at least once or twice a year back to Charlottte for visits thereafter...always on Connies. I loved seeing the old EAL Connies in their original livery. Lotsa memories there. Sorry we can't hear the rattle and hum of the big radials, or see how the old bird shook itself awake on the warm-up block before takeoff. They were truly alive...not like the jetliners of today.

  • Dude, awesome video! My Dad grew up around MIA in the 50s and 60s, he lived in Hialeah and frequented Corrosion Corner and other fun spots. He also hung out around Opa-Locka, and raced at Amelia Earhart and Masters Field.

  • Aah for the day when flying was a gentleman's affair. before every Joe Sweatsock could wedge himself behind a lunch tray and Jet off to Raligh-Durham!

    Sideshow Bob, The Simpson's

  • Thanks for posting! It's fun to see what MIA was like almost 60 years ago - this was back in the day when folks wouldn't think of getting onto an airplane without their best travelling suits. Your Grandparents seem like lovely people.

  • Yeah, unfortunately my grandparents are deceased... I was wondering where exactly this was filmed - this was before it was called Miami International Airport I believe.

  • Yep and you had no problems to get up close and I don't know if it happened back in those days, but certainly before 2001, visit the flight deck durning the flight. If I see footage from the past like this...it looks so romantic and actually so peaceful.

  • My Father probably flew every plane in this video, except that split tailed tail dragger at 1:34???

is that Pan AM Boeing? Panagra? Avianca?

Taking off on 9 Right, the rockpit is still there, surrounded by condos

    Great Film, Thanks

    I was one in 1951

  • It was a Lockheed Loadstar and most likely National Airlines.

  • Comment removed

  • should have remembered, HS buddy's father was a VP of NAL, my brother flew for them in the late 70s, now with Delta via Pan AM

"The Route of the Buccaneers" and "The Airline of the Stars" Remember seeing Sr pilot Skeeter Royal buzz the Great Miami Air Show in a 747 / 1970?

  • Great Movie.

    Love It.

    20/5.

    :).

  • Fantastic to see this footage in colour! Many thanks for sharing.

  • yeah it is certainly footage you cant find elsewhere

  • AWESOME!!! Much obliged, Christian

  • This film shows important changes in Miami that were occuring in the 1950s. Eastern Airlines & PAN AM were key to this development. Cool genre music also :)

  • I thought Lockheed Constellation too... but the Constellation had three tail fins and the plane you see here only had one (unless for some reason it was shown so directly to the side here that you could only see one of them).

  • The airplanes in the video: Lockheed L-749 Constellation, Douglas DC-3 & DC-4, AND a Douglas A-26 "Invader"!!

I'll check for more on my 10th run through; I can't stop watching this video.

    Christian

  • Fantastic Video! You should consider contacting the Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archive as they keep an archive of these to conserve our South Florida history. Amazing to see what was MIA in the 50's!

    Thank you for this.

  • Hi thanks....I kinda wondered what Miami A/P was like....super cool video. Thanks, Jen

  • Well yeah that's what my Dad told me as that is where his parents took their honeymoon... not exactly sure which airport this is... I'm guessing this was filmed at the 36th street airport that later became Miami International.

  • This film is wonderful part of history....A gem!! Super cool and valuable since Eastern & Pan Am were the two major key players in Miami's development and the city's Aviation History.

  • The public doesn't seem to think its that important with only 201 views in almost three months... barely 2 or 3 a day on average. I also note that Eastern and Pan Am both folded around the same time (1991).

  • 201 views??? That's bull****.

    Re-title the vid like this:

"Eastern Lockheed 749 Constellation Miami 1951"

    THEN...Add these to your keywords:

Douglas Lockheed DC-3 DC-4 749 Connie Constellation A-26 B-26 Invader Eastern air lines.

That'll help kick things into high gear. :-)

    Christian

  • I'm trying to determine which aircraft that was in the foreground that you see my grandparents boarding... I'm guessings its a Douglas DC-6 but not quite sure...

  • One aircraft looks like a Lockheed Constillation....the other a DC-6. My understanding is that by 1956 EAL purchased used the Lockheed Electra Turbo Props as their flagships.

  • The airplanes in the video:

    Lockheed L-749 Constellation.

    Douglas DC-3 & DC-4.

    AND a Douglas A-26 "Invader"!!

Eastern got their first L-188A Electras in 1959. I wonder if this guy has any more Honeymoon airplane footage???

    Best, Christian

  • I hesitate to believe its a Constellation because they had three tail fins and this one only appears to have one.

  • Hi-Your granparents are boarding a Connie, the single fin airplane behind them is a DC-4.

From the angle that they are boarding, the three fins are "Stacked" together, and so they appear as one. I've been an aviation enthusiast for 40 years, my Dad was an airline pilot, and I can assure that it is a Connie. The REST of the four engine single fin equipment that you see are DC-4s, or converted C-54s. :-)

  • yeah i see that invader at 01:44... wonder what it was doing there the war had ended... maybe it was going to Korea

  • Hi...well it looks like some more aviation fans have responded. I wish EAL and PA were still flying. I know how positively they were to the growth and stability of MIA and the community. Congrats again on this fine piece of history.

  • yeah... on second thought yeah i think it was a constellation (looked a little harder)
