  • marat safin was my childhood hero for tennis i remember the the massive aces that he did i reckon I always get pissed off quickly cause I used to look up to marat

  • I just realised why Safin defeated Fed in this match: he gave 140%.

  • Federer is the master at losing close and important matches... How he managed to win the one against Roddick in the Wimbledon 2009 final is still a mystery to me

  • safin made federer sweat. feds never sweats

  • hahah Safin is a loser

  • @akhrojjamal You are a loser. Safin was a great champion.

  • WTF with the music?

  • The best match EVER. And I saw a lot of matches.

  • Por este partido me hice fanático de esta mierda.

  • best match ever and may be forever)

  • Give me two flamboyant shotmakers like this over grinding dullards like Nadull and Djokovic any day thanks.

  • the match that started the new era of tennis.

  • music complements the video)

  • I could watch that lob at 3:23 all day.

  • It's like a t-rex vs another t-rex. Out of this world tennis!

  • Best match of Marat i have ever seen...he mean to win the open in the end!! And all d audience sang happy birthday song for him after he won...best moment of 2005 i say.

  • Safin was such a jackass.

    He couda been a contender.

  • один из лучших матчей, что я видел.

  • Safin was the first player to beat federer at his best

  • @MrGloryglorymanutd18 first and only

  • This is the only time federer ever lost a grandslam match on non-clay surface during the prime of his career.

  • The music ruin the video :(

  • rofl. i love Safin's celebration upon winning match point. looks like he's too damn tired to keep his arms raised...

  • this idiot should have been in the mix of things taking at least one of roger's slams per year during his heyday

  • @logant44 You could argue Safin should've put in a better performance at the US Open in 2004 but when else? He had a serious knee injury that ruined his career shortly after this match.

  • Federer was at his best, but the Russian Emperor conquered him.

  • most amazing match ever

  • the color of federers shirt changed mid-way :S

  • @has00786 He changed his shirt in the dying minutes of the match, he wore the blue one throughout.

  • i remember this match! watched the whole thing i was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

  • for me, this is the best match ever played. only man who outplayed roger (excluding roland garros) when fed played at his best (and this comes from big fan of RF). also, safin had as much talent as roger (dont believe me, believe pit sampras and other top players who said that) + better physical characteristics but as all russians (i know cause we serbs are pretty much the same :)) as soon as he got some money and results, he stopped training, while roger is soul difference of that.

  • its like you´r watching a fight between: calmness and rage :D

    brilliant!

  • @erifon1 like comment lol

  • I meant the '05 Federer playing the '10 Nadal.

  • Too bad the 2004-2005 Federer never really got a chance to play Nadal.

  • @dovestones Well he actually did, in Miami 04 Rafa won 6-3 6-3, then in the RG semis in 05 Rafa won 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-3 and in Miami 05 Federer won in 5 sets... I know it's only 3 matches in 2 years, and it woulda been amazing to see them in more finals back then!

  • I don't know about this match being the best ever.I have seen some unforgettable ones in my thirty plus years of watching tennis.Borg v. McEnroe Wimbledon' 80.Rafa v.Roger Wimbledon "08.This one is right up there though.I am so glad i have this taped.Boy did i miss Marat. For a whole lot more than just his tennis.lol.

  • I would probably like tennis more if instead of the Nadal Federer rivalry in the finals, there was the Safin Federer rivalry. And Safin was No.1 and Fed No.2 or Fed No.1 and Safin No.2. It's just a lot better when both players are so charming and friendly, yet produce some amazing competitive matches.

  • Funny when the crowd reacts to Safin killing the bug (3:00)

I wouldn't be surprised if Fed lost some sleep over 3:10. I can understand getting caught up in the moment and wanting to finish in style, but man he had time for a much higher percentage shot...

  • Greatest match of the decade. 2 players at their best.

    Good music by the way

  • fantastic match, the music on the other hand, not so fantastic. instead very very annoying

  • keith moon's drumming is incredible!

  • this match was the most amazing I've ever seen

  • This match was amazing, I remember watching it...but the best semi-final in AO history is that Nadal - Verdasco semi in 2009....the level of play throughout in that one was unmatched in any match I have seen.

  • @GaryLyons yes, if you like two people hitting with high margin for error, this match was between two men going for broke until the very end.

  • Federer on his knees....

    only Safin could do that...

    Marat 4ever!!

  • Safin... A stereotipycal angry Russian... But his a good bloke..

  • This should have been the next big rivalry after Sampras-Agassi. Oh well, it didn't turn out that way.

  • @mrbobevans I really did think that Safin-Federer would be the next big rivalry too....too bad it didn't really happen

  • And what made it better was that the two players on the court were arguably the two most naturally talented players in the world, at that moment, and also at present. The stuff of genius, but it was the man from mercury, known as Marat Safin, that did the impossible and beat the unbeatable, in a mesmerizing match, which lasted 4 and a half hours, finishing 9-7 in the fifth.

  • I have never seen a match where the shot making had been so perfect, and hit with so much accuracy and precision, it was almost out of this world. The awesome ground strokes, the ability to turn defense into attack, at every shot,

the amazing skill and variety, is something rarely seen in this awesome sport.

It may have not been the greatest match in terms of drama, but importantly it was a masterclass exhibition of perfection at its best.

  • For me this is the greatest match I have seen by far, if not at least one of the greatest. This match was not a slug fest,in which players slugged it out, it was not one, which consisted players antics, not one where the players were grinding out points, not a match that was messed about with lucky points and disputed line calls, no unorthodox tennis, not a match which was topsy turvy, and no bad tennis. This match was a real tennis match. In fact it was so good, it was surreal.

  • Best match ever!! Surpasses the Becker-Sampras Masters Final.

  • VAMOSSSS MARATTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

  • That was the worst way to lose the match, on your knees.

  • I love Roger . but this is best match

  • This video just debuked the comments by most Fedtards that Federer cannot lose playing his best tennis. Safin was incredible and was in god mode that day. No one in the history of tennis would beat Safin on this performance.

  • @Anaconda43VR Doesn't it say everything about Federer that Safin had to go into "God mode" as you put it to beat him. And he only achieved it 9-7 in the fifth. He didn't blow Federer off the court and in Grand Slams very few men do. To beat him players like Safin and Nadal have to reach tremendous levels. Safin could never do it again but Federer does it time and again.

You should just appreciate that whilst he still plays.

  • Federer was playing his best in this match too.

That's why nobody would have beaten Safin on this day.

  • @Anaconda43VR My point being that for one night only Safin played the kind of tennis he could only dream of through his career. And it was what he needed to beat Federer who is able to reproduce this kind of tennis whenever his opponents play unbelievably, whether he wins or loses in the end, his opponents have to go to the limits.

  • Actually Safin's bettered this performance. He played his best match ever at the age of 20 beating Sampras in the US open final.

  • this is better than nadal vs verdasco SF 09

  • this match is clearly much more quality and talent than that nadal-verdasco SF matchup in 09

  • Good music

  • This is a great match; one of the best in history. Federer tried his hardest but still wasn't able to defeat Safin. To bad he's retired.

Big forehand by Safin at 1:01

  • marat could have been so much better if he focused!!!!

  • bad song choice srry

  • Greatest Tennis Match of All Time!!!!

This is Roger Federer in his prime playing his very best and losing to Marat Safin.

    Safin rocks!!!!

  • Awesome play!

  • but why they play without ball ?

  • one of the best matches in the history of tennis

  • I love Roger and Marat ;

  • Safin: The coolest player tennis has ever known.

  • How many times Roger Federer saved match points for safin in this match ?

  • i guess i know why u r asking this question

  • Agree with you about this match. For me, the Nadal and Fed matches were not my favorites. Last night on the tennis channel they showed the 1995 Aussie Final of Sampras vs. Agassi. I enjoyed the Sampras-Agassi matches much more than the Nadal-Fed matches. For some reason Agassi's style and Sampras' style were perfect for great matches.

  • i cant believe fed had match point and hit a tweener.

  • Definitely in the top 10 all-time greatest matches. The Becker-Sampras indoor match in Germany is in the top ten as well. I am a huge Marat fan - wished he could have gone toe to toe more often with Federer in his career.

  • 01:01 WTF

  • 1:52 Wow

  • what is the song called? thanks

  • the who "baba o'riley"

  • best match 2005

  • why the hell would he hot dog on match point

  • @butterflycaught900

The media was wondering the same thing. It was all over headlines after the match was finished.

  • he said he thought the point was over anyway but clearly he had time for a shot. anyway he does S&V on big points too much. AO final this year when he was serving for a 5-2 lead in the 1st he came to the net every time, same thing serving for the 2nd set at the US~!! and why does he always ALMOST have big comebacks but stop just short!?? this match, 05 masters cup, 08 wimby??

  • It makes sense to s&v in Wimbledon, but if what you say is true, maybe Federer likes to use s&v to scapegoat on points when he feels under pressure. Just a player inclination, I guess. He's very capable of s&v, but sometimes doing it too much isn't helpful because it messes with your own rhythm and gives the returner a predictable kind of serve, even if the location of the serve isn't always obvious.

  • yes i think hes desperate to get the point over with at those moments. its a pity federer has lost every legendary match he's been involved in.

  • ...Which isn't true. Federer doesn't lose all epic matches he's involved in. He loses his fair share of them. He won the Wimbledon 2008 championships, he won the Australian Open 2009 Berdych match, he won the AO 08 Tipsarevic match, etc. Federer doesn't lose all epic matches. It's a pity that he loses so many though. Funny how that's the only sign of being human there is. Everything else about Fed kicks ***.

  • i hope that was a typo because federer LOST the 2008 wimbledon final

    FED 4 4 7 7 7

    NAD 6 6 6 6 9

about the others well yeh but those were 3rd round matches, its a pity he's lost so many big finals against the big guys

  • I meant 2007. Yea, typo.

  • МАРАТ!!!! Спасибо Тебе за Твои победы и Игру!!! Именно ИГРУ, которой сейчас так мало стало в теннисе!!!

  • Il più bel match del decennio!...senza ombra di dubbio

  • maybe the best match ever between two legends

  • what happened to this trainer? I never knew what happened to him,, !!

  • Some of the best tennis I've ever seen from both players.

  • epic.

love how fed tried to get up on the last point, even when it was obvious it was over - champ.

safin - love his reaction at the end - "yea I won, whatever, I'm knackered" - genius.

  • how overweening can you be, to play between the legs at matchball?

good thing, that safin won this game

  • what's overweening mean?

  • marat was playig well in this final,he was a great player

  • this was the semi

  • 2:34...I wish I could do that.

  • man 3:16 serving for match....

  • Music here is one of the most genuinely written and performed that I can cite or recall.

  • Dasha Zhukova safin's G/F is so hot........lucky safin and abrahamovich

  • I genuinely believe Safin has as much talent as Federer

  • as big a federer fan as i am, i cannot disagree with this comment. i am a huge safin fan too. i wish he could have reached more finals and wasnt hurt for a lot of his career. he has the power to compete against roger, he can move for a big man and he has a soft touch. tough combo when he was playing his best. still, roger is the best of all times

  • His backhand drive was better, his serve when on is better. Really, it is just movement and forehand consistency. Besides mental issues.

  • @Polarcupcheck Pretty much agree with you. Safin did move extremely well for a big, strong player and when he needed to he could move in and volley, could use the two hander to make some great lobs. Obviously it's not that easy to move like say a guy who is 5'10. Safin and Del Potro are great examples of big men with extraordinary power with the ability to mix it up and have really good touch when it is needed. Shame Safin got injured a couple of months after this tournament...

  • It really does suck. Ever since 2000 it has been knee, or I believe wrist. It just sucks, because he was one of the best to watch. I met old people at Miami that love him, so it wasn't just a young thing.

First time I saw him play on tv (maybe 97' or 98'), and I wasn't even too knowledgeable at the time, but I said, this guy has no weakness from the baseline. It looked close to Agassi, but with a big serve. Bigger groundies and serve than Kafelnikov. Destined for success.

  • @maxi750 I agree with you and the proof is in Safin's countless tennis records and grand slam titles... or maybe you are a bit confused sir

  • @Wodz30 all he said was marat had talent , nothing more, and we all know talent is worth shit with no work. on the other hand, if you saw this match, you have to admit he had a lot of talent, this is probably the only match in history where top form federer played his best and still lost. just look at his face. he knows he did everything right, doesnt even look disappointed. give safin a little credit for that.

  • @maxi750

    i genuinely agree

  • Is it just me or was Roger much faster back then?

  • the song here gets me so annoyed. i had to mute it.

  • Greatest game ever still. Better than Federer vs Nadal in Wimbledon last year. Safin beat Federer at his peak. Marat FTW.

  • greatest tennis match it shows that safin is the best there is when he plays to full potential against federer at his peak

  • What can I say.? just love this match. I´m one more og you who says this is much better than wimbledon `08.

Marat is great and sometimes I´m angry when I think he could have been N 1 for at least three years and got more g. slams. Anyway...you are great Marat!!!, and Roger too of course.

  • I love Marat and Goran. Both are awesome. Marat could do so many amazing things on a tennis court. I wished he outbattled Federer and won all the majors. Oh well, he is still the best.

  • roger was so fast back then. you can compare his speed now and back then. he also did lesser unforced error and people are so mesmerized by his shot making. man, wish roger can rediscover his best or even surpassed his best after a injury-hit 2008 season.

  • The Wimbledon 2008 final doesn't compare to this, I mean, since when did Nadal smack winners around the court and flatten out his shots like this? Federer played like a shadow of his former self, but not in this match. This is peak Federer being beaten whilst playing well, you don't see that every day.

  • I love watching tennis. A match between Federer and Nadal is great especially since federer is arguably the best of all time lacking a french open just like sampras, and since Nadal could be of all time in due time. And Becker/Sampras is nice as well as Borg/Mcenroe, but being as young as I am, and partial to Safin since he's my favorite, not because of his results but because he's colorful, this is my favorite match.

  • Fucking epic.

  • Its hard to compare the quality of play today to when McEnroe and Borg were around becuase of the better rackets and stuff. So i'll just chop it down to the last 10 years. This is still the greatest match of seen. This is better than the 2008 Wimby final. The quality was better. Federer played amazing in this match, and still lost. That is what makes this match so amazing. Safin took down Federer by playing up to his limitless ability at a time some thought Federer was unbeatable.

  • Yeah, the Wimbledon final was very epic because of the nature of the rivalry between Nadal and Federer. But really, that final should have been a straight-sets victory for Nadal. Roger was playing well by his standards, but he just isn't a match for Nadal's talent. If Rafa hadn't have choked away both the 3rd and 4th set, we wouldn't have had an epic, just a routine victory for Nadal.

  • Really, don`t tell me! It was Roger who choked! He was up 7-6 and 0-30 in the fifth set, two points away from victory, and couldn`t even hit well the ball in those moments! And no, it wasn`t for Nadal`s great serve (at least in those moments), it was because the pressure got the better from Roger! And remember that he was up 4-1 in the second set before suffering the biggest collapse of that game (granted, due to Nadal`s good play, but also because Roger had another of his great meltdowns).

  • Federer was playing well for his standards? Take a peak at the 2004 US Open final or basically any of his other grand slam wins pre 2008. Isn't a match for Nadal's "talent"? HA! What? speed and agility? Nadal's ball striking ability compared to Federer's is indeed, very limited. Federer will be 28 this year and Nadal 23, you can hardly call that a fair rivalry.

  • @dmbull22 you hit the nail on the head....Safin did have limitless ability and I always thought that Safin had just as much talent as Federer if not more...Marat's problem was that he didn't believe he could win as often as he could've...if he would've had a good mental coach, he could've played like he did here more often and won many more Slams

  • @miggy25 why do people like you forget that he was very injury prone? and don't come out with any crap saying that was only a small problem because he was injured during his prime with series injuries multiple times in 2001: back injury for months of the season. 2003: multiple niggles at the start of the season in shoulder, back then wrist for the whole year. 2005: from the clay season until pretty much end of his career he was hampered with a knee injury that left his slow and sluggish.

  • @dmbull22

I love this match, but its hard to top Wimbly 08, if nothing else because its a Slam final as opposed to semi and the cornerstone of the sports greatest rivalry instead of late-era safin capturing lightning in a bottle.

Personally, I think the quality of the Wimbly game is just a smidge better, more angles/strategy, less pure power by Nadal as opposed to Safin.

  • @jairus Fed fans cling to this match in order to convince themselves that Nadal never beat Fed at his best, and therefore Nadal *could* never "really" beat him. (fact is, Nadal rarely ALLOWED Fed to play his best, even when Fed was in his prime; Fed's best comes against opponents who suit his play style, and Fed prefers a low bounce as well as players who don't exploit his backhand wing) It's easier to give credit to Safin because Safin is not perceived as any kind of threat to Roger's legacy.

  • @jairus ...and Safin does deserve credit for this great performance, but similar to how some Kobe fans pump up Scottie Pippen, there are some Fed fans whose motivation is more about discrediting Nadal than really giving a crap about Safin.

  • @dmbull22

In regards to the racquet...Safin used the HEAD Prestige Classic 600 all throughout his career...it may have various paintjobs but underneath it was a Prestige Classic 600. The racquet that Federer used was pretty much a Wilson Pro Staff 6.0 original midsize. But are racquets that were made in the 1980's and 90's are still used today by many pros on the ATP tour.

  • I love Marat and can't stand Roger.

    Long live Pete!

  • I've watched this video like 10 times: the play is magnificent, the music appropriate, and the ending wonderful. Safin raises his arms but more to say "enough" rather than in victory. And Federer is crawling on his hands and knees to get the next shot -- bodybag indeed. Two true warriors.

  • thank you, i'm glad you enjoyed the video! without underrating great matches like last year's WImb final, this still by far is the single best match i've watched in my life.

  • @cllofdahl yeah...best match in the last 10 years...however...one match that comes close is the Roddick-El Ayanoui AO QF in 2002 I think...23-21 in the 5th or smth...epic...

  • Safin is the most unpredictable player in the ATP. Having so many outburts during this match, look how he celebrated his victory at 4:34, that's a big lol.

  • some of the best matches ever ....have federer losing...i don' tknow why..i guess it's because when he wins it's easy..when he loses you have to take him out in a bodybag

  • Your so right man.. look at nadal vs federer at wimlbeldon

  • Safin is like Nalbandian one of the few players who had the ability to defeat federer in his best years by using their powerful groundstokes.

  • 1:11 funny...

  • @ SunSigil: You can not say, that Marat has won with luck, in the final set he was the better player and the match was very closed for everytime so it is not a shame for Federer to lose against Safin

  • This should have been the great rivalry of the era, had Safin not been such a pathetic slacker.

  • Injury?

  • slacker?

    You cannot be serious..

  • Yeah, in every highlight reel I find of this match it looks like Roger was dominating. I guess that shows what was really going on: he played his absolute best, and yet Marat found a way to win. Amazing.

  • This is the Greatest match i have ever seen.. I would rate this match ahead of Wimbledon 2008 final.. In this match Fedex gave his all at Marat and still lost the match.. It was as if say that he was destined to loose this match.

  • It's a shame that one of them lost,really....It should have been the final...Fantastic match!Even though I support Roger,Marat was astonishing!!When he gets on a roll,he's quite unstoppable....

  • Nice music mate!!!;)

  • Best match i've ever seen, plus my lovely marat won.

  • one of the best matches ever in sport of tennis!

  • That's what i call Marat Safin on fire.

  • i don't understand how could federer possibly lose to safin here, he was on fire in this time!

  • best match i've ever seen, including us open 2001 final, wimbledon 2008 final.

  • wish i could see the complete match

  • do u want a link where u can download it from?

  • please :)

  • ok, i'll message you

  • can you send me the link too pleease??

  • dude, if you still have the link, message me - great vid. cheers.

  • 2 great athletes in on of the best matches ever--wish i could have been there!

  • great vid

  • Brilliant music and great video clip....

  • hello, is that the match when Roger call the kine? please I want to see that part, tank you
