When Nadia Comaneci was a very young gymnast. Lyuda was her idol. She was such a beautiful gymnast, coached in the "old school" of gymnastics, where the emphasis was on slow, controlled movements, finishing one skill well before starting another; Renald Knysh(Olga Korbut's coach) came along and revolutionised gymnastics, replacing slow and languid with quick, staccato movements.
@ralucagymnast It has to be said though, Vladislav Rastorotsky, Lyudas coach, was also a great innovator in the sport; he was also the coach of Natalia Shaposhnikova, then later on Natalia Yurchenko; between him and Yurchenko, they revolutionised vault. He also coached Albina Shishova, who did the first full twisting back salto on balance beam in 1983; it bears her name to this day, the Shishova;)
And the old school was, IMO, soooo much better. So much more grace, more fluid, more just breath taking instead of the whip around like a whirling dervish.
My top ten gymnasts in order: 1. Liudmila Tourischeva 2. Nadia Comaneci 3. Elena Shushunova 4. Svetlana Khorkina 5. Larissa Latynina 6. Vera Caslavska 7. Svetlana Boginskaya 8. Shannon Miller 9. Nellie Kim 10. Elena Mukhina
@adventuregirl76 I don't think I'd be very endearing either, if I were doing gymnastics in Soviet Russia. Who knows, she may have hated every second of it. Even Korbut later revealed that she had been miserable.
@adventuregirl76 She was the "ideal Soviet citizen": robotic in personality, almost, which is why when Olga broke down in tears at the Munich Olympics, it was so shocking for people to see that Russians had feelings too!! The Cold War propaganda had gone so far that people were convinced that Russians were machines; devoid of feelings, cold etc., Ludmila sort of reinforced that idea with her rather stern countenance. Olga actually looked like she enjoyed what she was doing.
I agree that 7:05 looks like Shaposhnikova, but it sounds like her coach is calling her Natasha amidst all of the Russian words. Is Natasha some variation of her actual first name, Natalia, or am I just misinterpreting what he is saying to her?
If ever there is a chance all should see "Visions of Eight", the documentary on the Munich Olympics. There is a segment called "The Women". It is mostly comprised of Tourischeva's Uneven Parallel Bars performance. INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL.

Yeah, the words go: "You're somewhat womanly and will never be an Olga, but you'll kick the shit out of whatever the Americans have to offer." And then somthing about Nixon being an idiot blah blah blah. That's my guess, anyway.
hey does anyone know the name of the music playing for the main title piece of this documentary. i love it, but even though i have numerous pieces steeped in my classical music collection, i cannot say i have this in it. does anyone know the piece being played on the piano?? any info would be greatly appreciated.... I HAVE TO HAVE IT!!!!
Back then, the gymnasts looked like women. Since the late 80s they are more like sprites....little 80 LB. girls. Tourisheva was one of all-time greatest!!

glad to see Caslavska and Mukhina in your top ten

@bbhouk1 Thanks! You are right. A list without those two top gymnasts included would be incomplete.

Problably as close as we will get to see God doing acrobatics on earth. Thank you Liudmila for your majestic legacy!!!

I wish I understood Russian--or that somebody who does would put some subtitles on this.

It's no wonder they were having trouble with vault...they were weighed down by all that clothing...yikes!

@adventuregirl76 Yes, how on earth do they manage to do what they're doing?!

Ludmilla was a lovely gymnast...and yet, so cold, exacting and unlikeable. No joy, no love for what she was doing (at least that I could see).

there are clips of that doc here on Youtube, one of which is the "Women" segment

@bbhouk1 Yes, I know. Thank you. The clip is a different one than the movie, though. It doesn't have the original music.
