  • cool

  • Scratch that earlier comment

  • R you all on CRACK! This IS the original version if im not mistaken the systems version came out around 86 & this is from 83.

  • @wedoit4money Sorry, but Palmer has done many covers or R&B hits. This is another one of them but yes, we are all on crack. So you are technically only half mistaken ;)

  • @wedoit4money You are mistaken, I had the System's album "Sweat" in the summer of 82, which predates this by a year. David Frank the original producer of this song, was asked to revamp the song to introduce to pop radio.

  • I'm not too crazy about the description of this upload, particularly the unnecessary bit about Michael Jackson. Regardless, Robert Palmer's always been cool in my book. Any white guy who can cover Cherrelle automatically gets a Ghetto Pass.

  • i prefer the original but palmer's "i didn't mean to turn you on" is one of favorites songs (it happens to be a cover too)

  • 4 stars. David Frank, co-writer/performer of the original also played on this track and fixed the mistakes he made on The System's version. More drive than the original and Palmer doesn't look like a failed MJ wannabe. Squared with round edges does work:)

  • This is the gayest, most square version of one of the coolest songs around by 'The System' Aka David Frank and Mic Murphy... No funk, BIG THUMBS DOWN..

  • Handsome man, and a nice voice. RIP.

  • I heard Palmers version first on the old Night Tracks Video shows that came on TBS back then. I dig his version. One of the coolest white men on the planet...

  • I only knew the version by The System. I had no idea Robert Palmer remade this. He did the song justice. Torn on which version I like better. Both rock!

  • The System's version is a little better. SO cool

  • The thing that I loved about Robert Palmer was that he could take whatever song and make his own. But yet at the same time, not take anything from it. That takes genius and musical talent!

  • gee, he looks tired - too much party with models as seen in previous videos? ;)

  • Wow I forgot he remade this...

  • Palmer took this song to a whole other level just like Hall & Oates did with Oldfield's "Family Man". A terrific cover & one of Palmer's best.

  • I like the original more but Palmer's remake is pretty dope too! Unfortunately music sucks nowadays so we have to keep replaying the same old funk, rock, r&b, hip hop, etc, until a new generation of musicians is born. The kids today aren't carrying the torch of good music. Hopefully today's kids' kid's will release some good music when they become adults. Because the music of the last 10 years has been borderline trash.

  • robert palmer didnt care what race u were he just enjoyed doing his thing

  • I always liked Robert Palmer as an pop artist and I this is a PERFECTLY good cover of the original!...Of course I love the ORIGINAL by THE SYSTEM........I am a BLACK MAN...Todays cover versions are just so FAKE and are done purely because for £££, plus these artist & producers LACK in STAR QUALITY & TALENT!

  • Why is this white always taking R&B pop classics made by black artists?

If you don't people check out this song by the system.

  • The bass & synth in this classic song always reminds me of the music in that dance club in the movie Robocop. This sounds a helluva lot better though. LOL

  • Palmer rules!

  • I love Robert Palmer!!! His songs are so unique! They don't sound like anyone else!!!

  • @letsdance1978

Umm... this song is a remake of The System's "You Are In My System" You might want to save that comment for when he actually makes his own song, lol. It's a damn good remake though!!

  • Robert Palmer did a better job on this song than the original band! He was one cool dude!

  • Robert Palmer is one cool motherfucker. Enough said.

  • the funk,, the voice,, Mr. Robert palmer,, never Gone,,, always in my system... forever..

  • sadly another victim of a heart attack...r.i.p..

  • @lukeydoeslikey and cocaine

  • "Mr. 80's."

  • of course i know it's a The system band song. But their original is much more softer

  • very hard groove. when in headphones feels like it is extremer than some pieces of aphex twin or metal music. Demolishing beats hah. and it a bit resembles of junoir's mama used to say

  • I thought this was a black guy when i first heard it. Robert Palmer did a good job on this.

  • Although I wasn't even born when Robert had most of his hits ( Born 1987), both my parents were big Robert Palmer fans and I grew-up with a lot of his music and think he's one of the most under-rated British Singers ever.

I once remember reading an article in one of the national newspapers saying that Robert was "One of the coolest guys in the business", after watching some of his videos I can clearly see why.

    Dave

  • I personally prefer this version, I respect the System they have great numbers,

  • As A black man, I loved his voice. He could The System, Marvin Gaye, even Robert Palmer. Still Listen to his music. Well Missed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Palmer's cover never did the original recordings justice. For instance this and his cover of Cherelle's 'Didn't Mean to Turn you On' . They're alright at best.

  • Dude, you're clueless. Both versions were great!

  • Such a horrendous cover. Robert Palmer was very capable of doing just that. Actually, he never created anything worth reminding. Apart from his next of kin I don't think anyone ever shed a tear on his demise.

  • @kax61 You are so wrong, my friend.

  • you're a complete MORON!!!

  • @musiclover3928 agreed

  • @NoahDel24 While reading back your nonsense I started to realize this ludicrous individual, going by the name of Robert Palmer had surrounded himself with fans that are even more pathetic than himself.

  • true talent!!

  • Sizzlin' hot!!

  • This video is not in 8 people's systems.

    Maybe they don't have reel-to-reel....

  • Love this song!

  • I bought the 45 of this song the same day I first saw the video on MTV back in the 1980s. Still have it, but no longer have a turntable to play it on.

  • RIP Rob I miss you! Thanks for all the inspiration

  • It's a good thing God didn't care about color. Thank goodness he gave Robert soul anyway!

  • I'm a straight man, and I would do Robert Palmer. He's that fuckin cool.

  • love this tune. I heard it way back when it first came out and was ahead of the curve for videos. Technology makes everything look old after awhile. I agree RIP Robert Palmer who was a superstar and a fantastic artist. I think rock and pop misses him a great deal as do I.

  • Soul isn't about race, it's about life...

  • The original is superior... but this is also AWESOME

  • Comment removed

  • A more famous artist covering a song is beneficial for the original writers- both in terms of royalties but also for their own fame, credit and legacy. People who get pissed off by it are people who were either ignorant of the original and feel duped, those who loved the original and think it's been ruined or those with a political agenda (racialists like eiffe).

This is a perfectly worthwhile interpretation of the song- and features David Frank, co-writer/performer of the original, on keys!

  • @thebri2 thanks for not calling me a racist. :)

  • @eiffe Oops i meant shnicka55!!! Sorry!

  • @thebri2 Man this is my shit either way!

  • @thebri2 Thank you. Someone with a brain. Robert Palmer jammed this song as well as the originators. He didn't take anything from this song. He just added his touch to it. I'm a blackman and I think this is a superior take on this song. Besides, music transends racial divides. just ask Sting, Phill Collins, and Stevie Wonder.

  • @IRONMANHONDO87 WELL PUT,TRUE AND FULL OF CLASS !!! YOUR A COOL CAT

  • @7thvenom I only express what I feel. To some, this maybe offensive, but it is the truth. it dosen't matter who does whatever song, just as long as they do it well. How did Bobby Caldwell go before he did his first appearance? Before he did his first live performance of "What You Won't do For Love" before WE saw that he was white? The song still sounded good. But some ignorant people had a problem with him because of his skin color. I don't agree to this point of view and never will. Thank you.

  • @thebri2 most times the issue people have with it is racial, to be honest. this version is pretty good, and in a different direction than the original, without taking anything away from it, and that is a very difficult feat to achieve.

  • @Birdy1968ful i have heard the original bitch. who cares what my name is...i don't even like the wwf. but it was fun to watch in the 80's and that wrestler had a funny name. i guess birdy is better. i wish i could be cool like you. don't talk in shakespeare, you sound like a fucking faggot.

  • FOR ROBERT PALMER TO HAVE BEEN A WHITE BLUEEYED SOUL SINGER AND CARRY OFF THE COVERS THAT HE DID WAS AMAZING. I MEAN HE WAS A WHITE GUT THAT COVERED MARVIN GAYE. I MEAN GIVE THIS MAN HIS PROPS AND YOU ARE RIGHT THE BASS LINE IS SICK NO MATTER WHO WAS PLAYING IT. WHETHER HE WAS WITH THE POWER STATION OR EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER OR ON HIS OWN THIS MAN WAS A BEAST

  • @djhouse40 FYI, Rob wasn't with ELP. That was Carl Palmer. No relation I believe.

  • I like both tracks

  • I think he was black on the inside. He loved malt beer, thick women and soul music. Yea, he was definitley an old school black dude.

  • very funky-robert palmer was a bad cat

  • Race aside. The System's version was much better. Palmer's video was better, though. Also Cherrelle's version of "Didn't Mean To Turn You On" was 10.000 times better than Palmer. He was good singing his OWN, original music. "Addicted To Love", "Simply Irresistible", Pepsi commercials, etc.

  • @thoomolong Personal opinion about songs is subjective but the public voted on both of those songs and he had hits with both and sold many singles and albums with both. The reason he was able to even put them on albums was because they were commercial failures for the original bands and they signed off on him using them because there were no royalties coming in for them. Palmer also had many hits in the 70's, not just commercials or 80's songs.

  • @drewby7777 That's not true. An artist can't stop another artist from covering their songs, as long as the latter pays the money to the publishing company.

The original versions of the songs weren't "failures". If they were, Palmer would've never even heard them. He was listening to "urban" radio for ideas. The reason the originals weren't bigger is because pop radio wouldn't play them, only stations that played "soul" and "black" music would play them. That's called segregation and racism.

  • @thoomolong "Segregation and Racism"?? Now you're playing the race card in who gets played on radio stations? LOL Please! Sell that black victim crap somewhere else. I guess the Gap band, the Dazz band, Grandmaster flash, Rick James, James Brown, Earth, Wind & Fire, ect were all secretly "white" guys? I used to hear all of them on the local top 40 stations in Boston. You're right about paying whoever holds the rights if you want to record it. Palmer did that and if he didn't he'd be sued.

  • @thoomolong Both are fantastic songs but i like Palmer's version better for some reason. As far as this track is concerned, I think The Systems track is better.

  • the master of album covers.

  • Can you say rip- off damn

  • @MultiGuarddog There was no rip off. The original band and the song writers gave him permission to use this song as many others had done. Palmer had a way of taking a failed original song, which this was, and turning it into a hit.

If he ripped it off it he would have been sued for millions and he wasn't.

  • ... brush the chips off of the shoulders... appreciate talent in all forms, all colors...

  • holy shit

  • Cool Syntesizer pop and computergraphic ! R.I.P.

  • Robert Palmer was tha MAN back in tha day!

  • palmer's too smooth!

  • Robert Palmer is just too smooth. I love the way he did this tune.

  • A warning to all of my Black Brothers and sisters do not FUCK!!!!!!! with this man he was with out a doubt a musical genius. And may he RIP... study the history of the artists/ music before commenting . Mr. Palmer I Love your music and always will.

  • For God's sake (every kind of) people , the guy was white and from the Midlands , but lived in Jamaica for 20 years.....there has to be an influence from both cultures !

  • im not white the colour of the singer does not matter this track is f==king great .robert palmer wasnt a white man he was a man and a f--king good singer as in the lyrics of a great track i remember ( it take every kinda people to make the world go round )

  • This is hot for no reason!! I love the system and Robert palmer!! No matter the color of the artist great music is just that let's understand good music is universal!! Mic murphy is proud I am sure!!

  • man much as I love roberto palmer, in this video his face is speaking to me, it's saying "this track is MINE, it's all part of my SYSTEM- steal tracks, make them MINE... all MINE!! Naughty Robert.

  • Damn this gives me 80s nostalgia, with the old school technology. And Im only 18!

  • Ewww bad sample

  • you....are between my legs....you....are between my legs

  • R.I.P. You awesome man!

  • dam...

  • I loved Robert Palmer, always looked forward to his remakes. He was the coolest white dude, miss him. We shouldn't argue about Robert being a white man singing a black mans music, Robert loved soul music, it was not about him copying.

  • I loved Robert Palmer, always looked forward to his remakes. He was the coolest white dude, miss him.

  • The System's version is better! He sounds forced!

  • @Willspeakthetruth Id say more powerful. Probably more robotic. But that suits the song.

  • Meh.....Not even in the same universe as the System's version...

  • @JimBrownski1970 Disagree, I think its a parallel universe in this case..... Systems version isn't that far from RP.

  • Comment removed

  • @shnicka55 LOL! U have been officially caught in the honey trap!! YESS!! In fact the composer of this song was actually WHITE!! Not that it matters anyway but your generic brain fart screwed it up for u this time! Live and Learn!!

  • @eiffe the singer is black, not the white dude playing the keyboard....dick!

  • @eiffe Shnicka is just another black man who thinks he is more than he is. I won't even bother with the racist statements. Considering the song was made long before his insignificant ass entered the world

  • @eiffe Nicely done. Exellent retort. Robert Palmer's nuiances gives his interpretation of this song class. Truly, race does not matter...at least, not to me.

  • @eiffe Still, the same message, regardless of the original composer (as if that mattered to Palmer) ...A lot of times, too, when we speak of "white", we speak of "MAINSTREAM" ...This was straight R&B synth/funk, not meant to be redone by a pop-rock artist

  • @eiffe ..and regardless of the white composer, the form of music is FUNK, which derived from black people

  • @eiffe ..This song is just TOO classic to be messed w/ (by whoever) ..He also remade the R&B jam by Cherelle, I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" ..This shows that you all are NOT true fans, lovers, nor knowlegdeable of R&B/funk, because you'd know that this song, regardless of who originally made it, should not be fucked with

  • @shnicka55 If i'm not mistaken David Frank is white

  • @philster61 this singer is black you fuckin faggot. Not talkin about the white guy on the keys!

  • @shnicka55 The black singer IS the faggot you fucking asswipe. RP version is far superior.

  • @philster61 Can you please take my dick out ur mouth and put it back in your moms ass. Fagit!

  • @shnicka55 Id put it in your moms ass if it wasn't so big......

  • @philster61 Its ok.... because i pray that someone you love and care for dies helplessly in front you....good day

  • @shnicka55 If thats how you pray then I doubt any of your prayers are answered. Don't worry, Its really satisfying knowing that I have fucked the girlfriends of weeds like you and had them gagging for it. Good day

  • @shnicka55 mate, you show how sad you are with your comments. You better reconcile your soul with the human kind and appreciate music for what it is and nothing else.

  • @WILLYSKYWALKER oh look....everybody look....this fag woke up on the "holier than thou" side of the bed. Plz go back to bed before knock your ass out!

And what i said is true. Do some history....fag

  • @shnicka55 Only thing about it is that he's showing thist song the respect that it deserves. Robert Palmer didn't bastardize the song. And did it the way it was supposed to be done, RIGHT!!! The no talents of today would NOT have done it the same way. They only would've taken one part of the song and just repeat it over and over for 5 to 6 minutes with stupid booty lyrics.

  • @shnicka55 Get over yourself. There is nothing wrong with a white person doing a song recorded by a black artist. Especailly if they jam it like Robert Palmer. More whites have more respect for the black artists than do the young blacks that lay claim only to the race card. Thing is, these young blacks think that their making music. What mental midgets. Beats do not music make.

  • was a drum machine used with song?

  • i want to have a cute latin chick rollerskating around my apartment

  • Robert was the best!! They will never make jams the way he did ever! Truly great master artist! Miss him dearly!!

  • @Birdy1968ful your a moron

  • love this song!

  • People make fun of me because I own 9 Palmer cd's. I play this song and they shut their mouths.

  • @Swassboss You wouldn't believe how many people I've turned on to RP who know him only from those Palmer girls videos. And you're right, when they hear how versatile he was...they're SPEECHLESS!

  • this song is still tight!!!!!!

  • Man! Imagine the great stuff we would have gotten if he'd lived

  • I still have this LP!!!!

  • YOU are in MY system, Mr. Palmer...

  • Robert Palmers covers rock

  • Sexy & classy man. They just don't get better then this.

  • Palmer was my "NIGGA". R.I.P good brother!

  • Anyone who is dissing this version of the track needs to realize that David Frank of The System is on keyboards here. Both Murphy's and Palmer's versions kick major ass.

  • RIP Robert Palmer...gone too soon...a lot of his covers i liked more than the originals.

  • one of mr. 80´s. thanks!!!!

  • BLUE-EYED SOUL, JUST WONDERFUL,,,,,,

  • The System - You Are In My System - good 100%

    robert palmer - 50% good

  • Loved Robert P! He was great and is mos def missed!

    I also love that girl's dress! : )

  • I so love this song-so addicting.

But they never reproduced this EP onto CD!

And I miss this classy guy...lots.

  • i love him he is the best male artist of all time long live robert i wish youwere still here xox

  • still sounds good

a nice translation of the system classic

  • I miss this man, his remakes were entertaining. I agree with Halston2, Plamer was a cool guy.

  • this song is so futuristic. ahead of its time that time.

  • I've been looking for this track for years.

    thanks so much!!!!!!

    Love this song!!!

    Robert is missed....

  • How could anyone not love this song? The bassline is sick! He was just too cool and didn't get the recognition he deserved.

  • @brendastar14 Bassline is pure David Frank (of the System) and is taken note for note from the original song.

  • @Storm331

    duh.

  • @ssnipes- Many people didn't know Palmer was NOT the writer or original performer of this song.(4

However your command of the language is excellent. Especially at for your age. Thank you for the, obviously, well thought out comment.

  • @ssnipes - Wow.. somebody is missing kindergarten today!

Anyway my comment was for those who did NOT know Palmer's version was a cover. As I knew many people over the years who thought he wrote it.

_Now back to school little one.

  • @Storm331 back too school for those who dont know this actually isnt a real cover. David Frank(the composer) was involved in the making of both these versions, and both were realeased in the same year. Technically speaking this song has two versions with two different singers.

  • HIS VERSION SUCKS COMPARED TO THE ORIGINAL BY The System

  • This was the jam back in the days!!

  • Robert Palmer was such a handsome chap <3

  • I agree Palmer has vocal skillz but......

STEALING songs from Black Artists was a profitable pastime for mr Palmer ( i.e. Cherelle [ didnt mean to turn you on} as well as this effort ) what else is new?? wonder if he ever heard of the movie 'Cadillac Records' hahahaha LMAO and YEA i'm white .. F### Y'all

  • @eyewizard lol dude still was the man..

  • @eyewizard I think it goes both ways, plenty of black rappers in the late 80's used plenty of "sampling" from 70's rock. Tone loc used "Christine 16 from Kiss and hot blooded from Foreigner for "funky cold medina" also the intro to Van Halens Jaimie's crying was used on "wild thing"anyhow FTW

  • @eyewizard you are not correct. david frank( the composer of the song) is 1) white and 2) gave the song to palmer , he even played new keyboard tracks for palmers version.

  • No me podido sacar esta canción de la cabeza en 15 años. Y no soy un personaje de esos que se quedan pegados en décadas. ¿Será la música del futuro?

  • Back when artist could hold a note

  • I nod to the System by Robert Palmer

  • Robert Palmer was an amazing talent. I love the original but I can listen to this just as easily. Like so many others, gone too soon - RIP

  • Few others knew how to rock the Armani suit.

  • Great artist, when he covers a song he made it his own

  • The green screen in this video clip remind me a cartoon in the 80's,"M.A.S.K",great.

  • Rob Palmer loved the funk!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Robert Palmer was freakin' awesome! But let's give credit where credit is due...this version is NOT or will NEVER be better than the original. The System put it down with this song! However Rob...you ae missed RIP.

  • @tisha812 -damn right. i like robert palmer's version but no one touches the system's version. this is when music has substance and quality, creativity and passion. i'm 43 and i miss all the great artist of yesterday. i have all the music in the ipod but i miss the artist and their performances that had class and love. todays music is pure garbage with the exception of a few artist. thats why i keep it old school and real. how can u listen to a thug rap about garbage on every song?

  • feel the groove,do it mr palmer

  • I love to mix this song with The System"s version.

  • Great song of robert Palmer,i played it often in club,i like to mix it with the famous let's dance of Bowis

  • The coolest of the cool. Rest in peace Mr. Palmer.
