He sings with a whole lot of soul for a New York Jewboy. By the way, I'm a New York Jewboy myself so I'm allowed to make jokes like that. However, if I catch anyone else making jokes like that, I will be just too happy to circumsise them with a chainsaw.
I played this song on a jukebox in a bar one night. A friend said "you know that song is about a bottle of wine don't you?". Wow. That really makes sense.
I have been looking for this freaking song all over. I had the wierdest flash back the other day, and it must have been from when I was in my crib, and my mother had this playing on the record player next to me. Its was more feeling and sound than anything, but one line of melody kept playing in my head and I couldn't remember anything other than it was Neil Diamond. Its been literally four weeks I've been going absolutely bonkers. Thank you!!
Neil Diamond... and the starlight skies of yesterday shine anew... the romance in heart sings out in joy... that young miss of passion and vision knows her self in the music...Yes, this "Rosie" is dreaming with no questions...
Mrgerandl is right im 15 years old And i can stand some rap but it just doesnt have the same spirit as the classics. I guarente that if an old school band started up they would make millions
@MrGerardnl I guess you want a pat on the back because you listen to country music..newflash, country is the most popular type of American music and most sellling...PS, I like rap and they also called blues, RNb and rock shit too...Ask Johnny and , Willie if they cared about that...nope...
@anya933 Not quite, I'm 16 and I think my generation sucks, I'm sitting here wishing I lived 40 years ago instead of listening to all this yo yo yo bullcrap that I here all over the place, or even worse this new techno stuff that doesn't even have meaning. But I get what you're saying.
I'm amazed how chill he is on stage, and how mellow the low part is, he's almost doing nothing, and then he busts out with that great voice. It's 'lounge', and yet, its authentic, brilliant songwriting at the same time.
I dont think we're getting back to the songwriting of the 20s-70s. It's weird that every one of those decades had great songwriting somewhere, and the 80s and 90s a bit, and then last ten years ZERO. Prob bcuz America/Jizsrael loves its guns and money more than its artists.
SO good-looking. They don't make men like Neil any more. I used to think he was singing about a girl, called Rosie. Wrong! He's singing about rose wine, which was a substitute for a woman on a Friday night. I listened to him a while ago on Radio 2, in which he explained the meaning of this song.
Neil''s live performance sounds as good as his recorded version--very few live band performances do that--its his consistant vocal/interpretive qualities. Most groups have to do the recorded version for whatever reason.
i heard today that he wrote this song about the cheap wine, "Richard's Wild Irish Rose", which I indulged in once or twice back in the 70s. I recommend it for hand-to-hand combat purposes only! Explains a few of the lines in the song, like "Cracklin' Rose, you're a store-bought woman!
here is something to think about. If Neil Diamond, at this age in the clip , was to audition for "American Idol" of today , I wonder what the judges would comment on ?
@hermiehermit The judges should have nothing to say because Neil's music and talent would blow them all out of the water. None of those judges can meet Neil's musical ability. It would be like telling Babe Ruth how to play baseball; or telling Abraham Lincoln how to lead a country. Of course those are subjective examples, but you understand what I'm trying to say.
sexy man....i was in love since i was about 10 or 11 years old.. now i', 53...man how time flys when this song came out time was so much simpler then but he still look good to me now a bit gray ,but hey i still marry him if i had the chance..lol
She's not a girl -- she's a bottle of wine. Neil Diamond told Rolling Stone that he got the idea from an Indian tribe in Canada with a much higher male than female population. When the guys with girlfriends all went out on dates, the bachelor guys got together and drank homemade hooch. You can actually buy a crackling rosé.
He was awesome in Boston at the Pops 2 yrs ago they should have him back. The man knows how to entertain I watched it on tv was glued too the set!He had the crowd rocking everyone loved him!You still have it Neil!
A great song and nice to see Neil when he wasn't smaltzy. Man in fact in prior videos he had more and appropriate moves. Another fav of mine is YOU got to ME and of course Solitary Man .. released twice .. maybe 67 and 70 ?
I have loved Neil Diamond for over 40 years. He is just the best and he has finally been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has seemingly been blackballed for almost 20 years, but he has finally been nominated. I certainly hope he is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is a long overdue honor.
I woke up with this song in my head this morning. My step-mom is a Diamond fan, me not so much. BTW this is a song about hooch made and enjoyed by native Canadian tribes.
Yeah,,,drank my fill of, 'a poor man's lady,' while flying down the road in a '64 mustang, filled with four guys and a case of 'Rosie.'
Funny thing is, seemed like every time we tried the radio, we ended up belting out, "Sweet Caroline," at 70 mph on a narrow two lane black top country road.
Those were the days of invincibility. At that age, you believe you'll live forever,,,,,just like the music.
Neil Diamond is so much better than Barry Manilow. Have you seen Barry Manilow lately? He looks like Topo Gigio.. a little Italian mouse shown on The Ed Sullivan Show in the 60's. Plastic face.... I love Neil Diamond!
A great songwriter, and a great performance. But the hair! And the go-go dancer in the background! This is a song you can appreciate because it's so good, but at the same time you can laugh at some of the period touches.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Neil Diamond's high school vocal teacher said he would never go anywhere with music-HA!!! The wicked old witch was incredibly wrong and we were incredibly lucky that he didn't take her to heart. BTW, did you know that Neil and Barbra Streisand went to the same h.s. in NewYork-Brooklyn I believe but not sure. Having a senior moment right now.
@survivrs I'd like to add, that whoever this person was (his H.S. Vocal Coach) could not have been more tone deaf herself....his pitch is REALLY good..especially considering all the pure crap that comes outta hollyweird these days...autopitch and whathaveya...
@AKMAC82 Thanks for the positive reply regarding his voice as well as his pitch. I would agree that she was more than likely tone deaf! Thanks for your comment, I truly appreciated it! I have loved ND ever since the first time I heard that sond and I am 50 now!
@AKMAC82 forgive me, what I meant to say was the first time I heard that SONG, it was the first one I heard, but by the mid 70's, I was very familiar with all of his older music as well. He truly is awesome!
@survivrs Neil Diamond has always described himself as being very sensitive(which he is) but he also has an incredible faith in himself which is the reason he has made it so long in the business. He certainly faced a great deal of rejection before he hit it big in the mid sixties.
@pie0my I think I remember reading that about him but I keep having more senior moments. Maybe I'll take his autobiography with me next week when my husband has surgery and I can read up on Neil again. I've had the book since the 70's so there is nothing current in it which I love. I remember the long hair and his "oldies" although in season 7 of American Idol, they had a week of Neil Diamond and on Youtube, David Cook is singing with Neil coaching. My 2 favorites for old and new!!!
He sings with a whole lot of soul for a New York Jewboy. By the way, I'm a New York Jewboy myself so I'm allowed to make jokes like that. However, if I catch anyone else making jokes like that, I will be just too happy to circumsise them with a chainsaw.
