THIS FILM WAS ACTUALLY THE MOST TERRIBLE FILM I HAVE VER SEEN, IT IS NOT ENTERTAINING IN ANYWAY WHAT SO EVER... they shouldn't have even bothered making it
On the same scale that was used to rate this movie, Spirit really deserves a 3. Don't get me wrong, I had fun too. But, only because me and my friends riffed the flick ala MST3K the whole time. When you pay almost $25 for two people to see a film, there is a certain level of performance and entertainment that must be reached to feel that you got your money's worth. The Spirit failed miserably.
" The Spirit ", was like RICH actors telling me to : SHUT UP & DEAL WITH MY VERY BAD ACTING CAUS EI GET 60 MILLION A YEAR ! ", Well, sorry, I don't fall for it anymore !
i agree with this review. the movie was lame beyond words, but i loved it because i laughed so much. this is definitely a movie you should see with a group of friends. sit back, relax, and make fun of how bad it is.
He LOVES women but turns his back to a nude Eva? Does she have an STD? Hairy legs? A penis? :) I thought the funniest part of this movie was the fat, bald-headed clones..fer schure. And that fake, macho, gruff talking routine (Batman,Spirit) is getting old. Only Rourke(Sin City) does it right.
Well it does seem like this might be something for me! I love camp. For example I've recently started to watch Ed Wood films and they have an appeal to me. I also enjoy MST3K. So you know what? I'll wait until this one shows up on DVD, I'll bring my best friend here and then laugh my ass off while mocking it, MST3K style of course.
Also when you think about it... Many of the problems with the film are problems with Frank Miller himself: He writes VERY corny and campy dialouge!
Hate to correct you... but Sans Serif (note the spelling) is a style of font. "Sans" meaning "without" and "serif" meaning those little pointy things on the ends. Arial is an example of a sans serif font - Times New Roman is a serif font.
i think people thought this was going to be a more serious movie or something because i think it's right on par for what it is. this movie is a cartoon. over-the-top character, corny, campy and it's all in good fun. think of it like power rangers. we ate that shit up when we were kids and it was awful. and i still watch old episodes because it's still fun somehow. and at least this movie is artful. this movie is great because it's absurd. my guilty pleasure movie: fast and furious tokyo drift
posting again i finally saw the movie last night, i had a blast, the continual reference to egg on face, samuel jackson was hilarious,"That is damned weird",this is one of my top guilty pleasures now thanks for the review
embrace the absurdity and forget the plot seem to be the right approach to enjoying this film, which, while (obviously) flawed seems really to have suffered worse from being mis-marketed. Miller's "self-indulgencies" REALLY only hurt the movie when it came to his palette choices. Color this movie more like 'Dick Tracy' than 'Sin City' and, critically, it'd probably be a whole nother ball game.
nods to eisner's jewish identity and comics history were also greatly appreciated
yeah, Eisner was a big jew, forget Sand Serif, for me, it was ALL about Morgenstern.
the media is hellbent on referring to 'the spirit' as 'the graphic novel'...BS: it ran weekly in news papers as a 8 page, (largely non-sequitor) weekly comic-book supplement. That, coupled with Eisner's 'Citizen-Kane-y' innovation were what made it special.
Frank Miller's comics aren't for everyone and this movie fits right into his body of work. a case for his "Auteur"-ship isn't hard to make.
Auteur-ship - nice use of the phrase. So much of the hatred I've seen batted about against this movie seems to be aimed not at the film but at Frank Miller himself. This is unquestionably Miller's vision - so many seem unreasonably offended that his vision is different than their own vision.
Dude, great review! You're hilarious! I'm still a little confused on what your actual opinion of the movie was. Are you saying it's bad but you liked it?
If you take everything at face value - the dialogue is simply atrocious. But you mix it with the panache of the visuals and it because something else entirely.
I saw this movie when it came out. It sucked a fattie. I'm glad I was only charged child's price for admission. This made feel a little less stupid for being a tool assuming it would be good because frank miller directed/adapted it. The movie was nothing but fluff and good marketing. Don't waste your money and see it.
Actually I think you're wrong on the marketing. It's absolutley terrible marketing. I read an analogy that this movie was marketed as Lethal Weapon when it should have been marketed as Naked Gun.
Problem is when people think Frank Miller, they think 300 and Sin City. This is a complete departure and Lionsgate didn't make that clear.
It is fluff - no question about it. It's overstuffed exaggerated fluff. It's like cotton candy - fun silly fluff.
i plan on seeing this one now, i did like sin city and 300, a guilty pleasure movie of mine is Ernest Scared Stupid, loved it when i was a kid and love it now....
The movie could done a lot better if it was rated R with more violence and smart story telling with characters played the roles right rather than being so mindless
It would have been a different movie. I liked the campiness and silliness - If it were violent and the characters straight, I'm not sure I would have like it as much
I can digg it, you deserve a comment on your video because your comment opened my eyes a bit more after the spirit angered them closed. I think that if looked at in a comedic way there's more to get from the film than what I saw. My guilty pleasure is Conan: The Barbarian, it's got a D+ on IMDB and an A+ in my heart.
I was kinda worried about this movie, but it looks like it's right up my alley. Great review, btw.
I don't have many guilty pleasure movies, but I admit that I thought You Don't Mess With The Zohan! was absolutely hilarious, and was flabbergasted when so many critics didn't like it.
this film reely needed a gud sound trak

This movie was so much fun. I wish the poetic bits were made a bit more concise but those dragging bits aside it was a freaking giggle.

Yeah kinda ironic that these superstar celebrities pulling in 7 figures are acting at a level equivalent to skit night during band camp.
But this is a movie where they're just cashing in on their familiarity. I acknowledge that.

My higher ups have banned me from saying that phrase. Something that is bad can't be good or so goes the logic.
I'm saying it's so campy and over the top that it's a lot of fun.
BUT DO NOT GO EXPECTING TO SEE 300 or Sin City.

Well I saw the movie yesterday and it was like an ove the yop 40's detective movieWith a naked Eva Mendez

I still want to see the movie, though from what this review says it doesn't live up to the original will eisner comic. I may wait for it to be on tv.
Ozgarthefighter 3 years ago
I didn't say it didn't live up to Will Eisner - frankly I've never read a comic book in my life (unless you consider Highlights)
I have read that this movie may live up to the "Spirit" of Will Eisner's books (pun intended) in that it has a sly sense of humor.

Just don't go into the theater expecting Ironman or Dark Knight.
And if you cool with it - have a drink or two before... it'll probably make things funnier.
Just don't come back and yell at me because the movie was terrible - I warned ya :) :) :)
