6:23 onwards is fucking awesome. i love the over the top bend note in the riff... "derp... bee nerr nerrp...nnnnnerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr nerp" so fucking brutal and over the top. i love how it just sounds so out of place and is carried way over the bar
I tried to show Meshuggah to a friend. He listened for 30 seconds, switched it off and turned out Linkin Park's "In The End". Now I myself do like some Linkin Park every now and then, but this... was a sad moment for me.
My personal opinion is that the combination of guitars, rhythm, and rhythmically-placed screaming vocals during the "MIND-SIGNAL TRANSMISSION PEAKED, DISTORTED, BENT... UN-RE-STRAINED!!" defines Meshuggah's style the best.
i got hook on you guys from my ex-boyfriend joe and his friend jason........ as my boyfriend would say now guys is rock out with your cock out...........lol
i've been listening to as many meshuggah songs as i can on youtube and they all sound the same to me. i love shed and all the intermissions in the songs they have are cool (like at 5:25). i get that they play in polymeters and it takes talent but to me it all runs together and i don't like it at all
@DoctorLipsh1ts I'll tell you, man, all it is is that you're not listening in the way that the music is demanding you to. I just got into Meshuggah like 2 weeks ago by recommendation, and I'm a jazzer. A year ago I would have shut this off after 5 seconds. For some reason, metal has finally clicked for me. The drummer in this band is VERY smart. As I understand, he writes a lot of the music, and his style is very aligned to modern jazz, especially the likes of Steve Coleman.
@FiveHundo500 i've been listening to metal since 7th grade (i'm about to be 18 now) and i love more technical stuff like between the buried and me or the red chord, but this isn't my type i guess. i love the song shed because i can actually hear an eerie melody in it but this all sounds like hitting the bottom string over and over in a very bizarre pattern (and yes i get that it's technical and highly difficult to play). i love tool and progressive music...just not this i guess
@killwhitneydead666 I've listened to catch 33 and nothing back to back while tripping. All i can say is when you come down how many hours later your left with a definite lasting impression.
Just try to count in four (in beats) while listening to the song, and don't worry about the odd meters at all. This is what I mean by the 4/4 feel. A certain pattern doesn't have to be only four beats long to be written in 4/4 time sig. Then when you get the patterns down (either tabbing it and/or just memorizing) you'll know what I'm talking about.
correct me if im wrong, but if it takes around 4 times for it become 4/4 wouldn't it be something like 16/4? anyways, the core is 4/4 but im pretty sure the guitar parts are sometihng else that just meet up with the 4/4 beat. rotating time signatures.
Ever heard of polyrhythms...? They're different from time signatures. This song among almost all of them are entirely written in 4/4 and maintaining the 4/4 feel is important. The "guitar parts meet up" after four measures of 4/4 in the intro, for example. All of their patterns often realign after four or eight measures. Eventually it's not about calculating, but memorizing and feeling the groove.
it's a tad different from that. it's not purely 4/4 in fact almost not at all. the guitar and the drum parts play completely different time signatures, but when repeated enough those time signatures meet up. the srums play 4/4 but the guitar is often playing something like 21/16 or the likes. they essentially are playing time signatures, but they're just playing different ones that eventually meet up. the core is 4/4 but not the whole shabang.
Great you just proved you didn't get my point at all. First of all, if you'd just "repeat" those odd time signatures, they wouldn't meet up after e.g. eight measures of 4/4. Odd meters never do. That is why there's a small ending part in the tail end of the patterns to even it up and the whole thing starts over (or another part comes up). OF COURSE the guitars are playing something different, everyone hears that.
@rololoo This is 4/4, the band admit that they write in this time sig it's just the polyrythmnic slicing between instruments of the sig that gives it it's feel. Read some music theory books if you don't get what I and rolollo are talking about.... Odd meters do meet up, it's the rests that you're not counting. Jesus....
My point rather was that you should listen to this stuff as you would listen to any "regular" simple paced music based on 4/4. That doesn't happen in instant since your brain automatically picks up the odd things and perceive them differently, but after some time you'll get a grip.
black metal bands are religious visionaries and philosophers, etc, more than musicians; but meshuggah are pure musicians first and foremost. Their superior musicianship comes through instantly.
My fav Meshuggah song and album. This song is sikk in a car with a loud system. The part where it kicks back in after the interlude made me jump the first time I heard it haha
