Reminds me of a hick gospel group that wanted this song on their album as an instrumental, so renamed it, "Gospel Cannonball Express." Too bad you weren't around to do the piano. It would have blown the album out of the water!

A man named William Kindt published a first version in 1904. From there, both Hugh Cross and the Carter family did a version in 1929. In 1936 Roy and His Smokey Mountain boys recorded it with Sam "Dynamite" Hatcher at the lead. When Mr. Acuff reorganized his group in 1938, they re-recorded with him singing and it became one of his two signature songs; the other being Great Speckle Bird. Hope this clears things up!
