All of this back and forth in here between D.C.I. style and HBCU... What is now " modern " rudimental drumming and " HBCU " rudimental drumming all came from the same place. Old drum corps and I am talking going back to the 50's and 60's. Really we can all thank the Swiss for practically inventing the whole " rudimental " thing in the late 1300's. With audio and video recording we are able to get ideas of other ethnic or cultural percussion from around the world. Lets use this people
ok people state drumline is better than norfolk duhh ii knw this. How do i know this? i go to all pracitces games and most of their battle of the bands they have in orangeburg since thats where i stay. when most people goin to do stuff halftime i stay and watch the drumline so yea i kno 4 a fact scsu drumline is better and cleaner than norfolk drumline. im not sayin norfolk not good but scsu drumline is better
@1stDgree Yeah right! Like SO many other drumlines have!! Get over that dillusion!!! Check the PASIC scores and archives, THEN try to find room to talk. I can always point out the non music majors on this thread by how ridiculous the postings are!!
LOLOL @ all this North Texas Talk vs SCSU talk. It's like comparing apples n oranges. HBCU's traditional style's and Corps style lines live on two different creeds. I was on this line and I've met Paul Rennick plenty when he was @ Carolina Crown. I went to a corps style high school that was heavy on DCI and Pasic... It's evident that qjbomb1 isn't enlightened of tryna compare 2 skools who obvious seek entertainment thru 2 totally different creeds. And that's just a small part of the comparison.
i swear i couldn't have said it better myself! all this corp vs hbcu crap is like saying a different genre of music that you so happen to listen to is better than another. it's impossible! i absolutely love both styles of drumline. i'm currently in a dci style high school drumline and we change our show around every year so we do part hbcu part corp style. put a DCI style drummer in a HBCU band and he won't do very well by their standards at all. it's SO HARD to dance and drum at the same time
@crzychzwngs i've done it. is not too hard to dance and play 2's and 4's. but the people didn't like me too much because i always talked about their lack of techinque and the dirt produced by a college drumline. FAMU
If only they were cleaner. North Texas would kill these guys, but don't feel bad. UNT is after all "The Most Dangerous Drumline on the Planet" for a reason: 24 PASIC national titles. No one else comes close.
I guess you never heard of Paul Rennick (UNT, Phantom Regiment, Blue Devils) or Jeff Queen? UNT alumni just like me. Remember, the PASIC competition determines the best drumline in the world.
@southchiboi I agree with you in some points but I do have to give it to UNT. I do enjoy watching SCSU though, theyr're probably the closest thing out of all the HBCU bands to DCI or technical drumming, at least now, with Tim Greene. You guys are funky.
I know of Jeff but I think ya'll lack the entertainment side of things...c over here @ HBCU land we are clean plus more entertaining...........over there u guyz focus more on technical aspect and lose a crowd who knowz nothing about rudiments........
@john3047X you are so right they have so little ability that their musicians have played with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie in his lifetime, B.B. King, Clark Terry just to start. The instructor has a DCI background, their line includes musicians that have DCI background. But, I understand, most people of limited intellect attempt to hurl insults when they have no substance.
@john3047X Low-lifers attempt to insult people that they don't know. Enjoying yourself at a football game does not qualify you as such. Adapting rudimentary technique to a contemporary genre is innovative, creative, and creates a product that must be ridiculed by some to compensate inadequate self-worth. Rather pitiful at best, but more than likely just less than a man.
@qjbomb1 dude you cant compare north texas to scsu they are two different styles and as my memory serves when you guys played aginst rice university in the fall of 2008 rice won halftime cause we were more entertaining than you guys sure we dont sond perfect and we dont care cause none of the band members except arenot music majors in fact our band at rice isnot apart of the music school. unlike north texas we at rice like to have fun which is band suppose to be
@TheDragonmaster18 LOL!!!! RICE? Are you serious??? The way U of H spanks you guys every year should be humbling, then you have the nerve to call out UNT??? The MOB is composed of a student-based group of smartasses that MAY have talent, but it's for fun. I have a former percussion student enrolled for the Fall. He'll show you guys how it's done!! Speaking of, SOME music majors want to actually find jobs afterwards. You think a Rice percussionist would stand a chance versus a UNT grad???
@qjbomb1 dude you guys didnt even have i was compaing our halftimetime shows not the band in general. and rices halftime show was more entertainig dont get me wrong i enjoyed you guys but most of our audience at rice doesnt really like that style
@TheDragonmaster18 What composes a general audience? I'll tell you: the average, non-musician who doesn't know any better! That's why professionals judge the REAL competitions, not halftime shows. I wasn't at that game, but I'd bet my salary that UNT blew Rice out of the stadium. UNT's sound versus the MOB? There's no comparison! BTW, if it's a home game, OF COURSE the audience is going to root for the home team regardless anyway!
i agree with noonie on the fact that about Thugboy needing a history lesson. Go way back in time before Eddie Ellis was even though of at SCSU. BBI was indeed awesome before his or any other former Morris Brown staff's arrival
Thugboy404 needs a history lesson. This is what happen when you have highschoolers talking about something they know nothing about. BBI was awesome before Ellis...actually they were better. That MoB mess is getting old. They would never be on the level with BBI and the 101. Why Ronald Sarjeant. I see your still living your pipe dreams through MOB.
hey i thnk SCSU has more percussion but dats basically because they march regular tenors and multi-tenors.and in my opinion both MDFS and BBI are like the best two lines in the nation. two seem throw down would be one for the ages soon
i heard dat the only reason scsu got this good is becuz every one from morris brown went to dat school when they lost their credidation... is that true??? i think so becuz morris had the best drumline and now yll have the best drumline next to norfolk... and yall got good around the same time morris brown lost their cred
No it didn't happen like that it waz only Mr. Ellis and a few people from MB who were on staff...
Chubb waz tha only guy from MB working with tha drum line and there waz another guy who marched with MB but transfered a year before Ellis got the job(he marched only 1 year Under Ellis @ SCSU).
But in short MB people didn't switch schools like that and no we are not next 2 Norfolk we can olny be equals or greater...
Yes I saw it after I responded. Anyway, it a good job done. Most HBCU Drumlines cadences are primitative, and repetitous. This SCSU Drumline is what a Drumline should sound like. Not to say that there are not other out there, but I just have'nt come across much. I did see Norfolk State University Drumline, and are good too, and I saw Bethune Cookman's Drumline as well. BCU snares were'nt as clean as SCSU but they did have more visuals. All in All. SCSU Drumline are good.

Impressive! Just not big on single tenor drums, they always sound mushy and out of tune, and with quad/quint tenors you just don't need them--- love the cymbals, and yes, the snare line is hittin!
YA good and everything, but the section leader or percussion head need to balace the drumline, tell the quads to play out a little more, cuz there more snare than anything and when the basses split, make the rolls more unique and toned out.let howard know that ya bassline can hit any rudiment on tonals. the snares are good but ever section needs to shine to, so ya need to balance the cadence out
ii know how to play the whole thing lolz tru talent
