I think this is the best teriyaki chicken cooking tutorial I've ever seen. Everything seems to be so simple! I'm wondering though - what if I have a bottled teriyaki sauce? Should I use it the same way as you did or do I have to dilute/thicken it somehow? It's the YAMASA Teriyaki sauce marinade & B.B.Q.
@Panczekolada - I haven't used a Teriyaki sauce, but I think it has all the seasoning already, I'm not sure if that brand is thickened. You can try and fry the chicken my way and just add the sauce and see how it turns out.
I've done everything your way except for one thing - I've marinaded the chicken in my sauce for an hour(so it would get that slight brown tint) and it came out delicious! I didn't have to dilute or thicken the sauce, given that it reached the same state as yours but the dish came out a bit too salty. Should I blame it on the marinading or the ingredient proportions? Would adding some sugar be a bad idea?
Also - thanks for the tutorial - incredibly simple and great effect! 10/10
i don't use sugar, well, just bcoz i don't have any left at home. but it still turned out delicious! i think the sauce can also be like gravy for the mash potatoes too. very lazy, student-friendly recipe!
Actually, how the japanese people do it traditionally is quite simple too. equal amount of shoyu, mirin and brown sugar. Some also add a bit of sake to the sauce. But I like your videos, btw! you do look kind of "naughty" in the beginning:P
There's more ingredients that goes into the mix with soy sauce to make teriyaki sauce. About to make another batch of teriyaki sauce for the Superbowl, l make the sauce separately and store it in squeeze bottles. Cut the chicken (like in this video), and soak it in the sauce. I'll also massage the teriyaki into the chicken, before leaving it in the fridge for 2 days. Grill on the stove in a nonstick frying pan, each side for 5 min.med heat. When finished, cover with more sauce and sesame seeds.
@st604boy - Hi, that's an interesting question because I've always used powder sugar so I don't know how it will turn out with any other kind of sugar i.e. do you mean cubes?
@LinhHayman I didnt use powdered sugar, and the sauce didn't turn thick. it tasted good, but I want the texture of the sauce to be thick. I'm a beginner at cooking, so could u please tell me if its the sugar I use that doesn't make the sauce thick or something else maybe? What factors causes the sauce to be thick? Thank you.
@gtrshreder - If you coat the chicken in the plain flour, then fry it, cut in to pieces and add the 1/4C soya, 1/2 C water and 2 tspn sugar with chicken and cook on Med heat until the sauce thickens. The flour will help make th sauce thicken, the sugar will also help caramelise the sauce but the main thickener will be the flour. If your sauce is runny, you can thicken it with 1 tbspn cornflour mix with 2 tbspn of water. This way your sauce will definitely thicken.
@LinhHayman powdered sugar/confectioner's sugar usually has cornstarch mixed in so you might not get the sauce as thick w/o reducing it if you add plain granulated sugar.
@89Virus89 - Hi, that sounds good too, I do recommend less soya sauce too, especially if you don't want it to be salty, it's up to individual preference. My recipe is strong in flavour and we like soya sauce :)
The quantity of soy sauce made it a little bit to salty, but it looked good.I think instead of using 1/2 cup of soy sauce, it would be more heathy to use 1/4. Thank you for the recipe. I have learned a lot. Can't wait for the next video. : )
@TurtleDove81 - Hi, I'm not sure what you mean but if it looks and taste like soya with less salt, it's ok to use. It should be great for this recipe!
@HaiyTai Hi, I think I know what you are talking about...Lemon grass chicken stir fry and I just cooked it a few days ago for my family...they love it ! haha...I will try and post it soon for you...yummy!!!
Yes, I used a slightly lighter in salt soya so you should add 1/4 C to 1/2 Cup depending on Soya. For Kikkoman, they are little salty so use 1/2C next time! Thanks for the comment :)
She's obviously a good cook and so thin too.
