And here they go again. They claim British army was nearly destoryed i nthe summer of 1940. Damn!! When are they gonna learn that the BEF had to evacuate leaving its heavy material behind. But those men would still function well as regulary infantry. And the BEF is NOT the whole British army. There where plenty of fresh divisions on British soil with more tanks and artillery than the Germans could have landed in the first days of the invasion.

And lets not forget about Tsjechs (just as many as Poles) and French, Belgians, Canadians, Australians and South-Africans (tough they where smaller in numbers compared to the Poles & Tsjechs)

@hathwit7 Poland was invaded by both the Nazis & the USSR, & had a double whammy of horrifics. They also had the infamous Warsaw ghetto, as well as the Warsaw ghetto battle & massacre. & Hitler's invasion of Poland was the last straw for the allies, & officially started the war. + after the war they ended up under Soviet control for 44 years, which led to more problems. In a lot of battle there were Polish forces b/c of the opposition Polish gov. in the UK.

That's why we like the Poles.

However his battle to destroy the RAF was very real, and Britain did not know it was a bluff. I am not trying to diminish the importance of the Battle Of Britain. It was absolute vital for stopping Hitler that the RAF won the BOB. It was the first time he was stopped and suffered a defeat, and as such has to be one of the important turning points of WW2. Hitler didnt expect the Luftwaffe to fail in its task to destroy the RAF.

@Xiolablu3 You are so right! I despair of reading comments that Hitler could have invaded Britain. A simple, cursory search of Operation Sealion on the internet, shows beyond any doubt he didn't have a hope in hell and that's with or without the RAF. if anyone cares to study the subject, it becomes more apparent. Those barges were useless. The task facing those troops was impossible. If there is anyone on here who thinks Germany could have invaded Britain he, or she, is a dick!

D-day 1944 showed the absolutely massive preparation which was needed for a cross channel invasion. 2 years of planning , complete air domination and absolutely massive amounts of troops, ships and vehicles. Hitlers makeshift barges and tiny Navy would have been destroyed and he knew this. He didnt want war with Britain, he wanted to try and 'scare her' into a peace treaty, so that he could carry on with his campaign in the East without fighting a war on two fronts.

Goering was one of the worst military leaders in history. He thought using planes enmasse would win a battle and impress Hitler - instead it lead to heavy losses. In the battle of the bulge he sent 1,000 aircraft against the allies, which effectively destroyed the luftwaffe as an effective fighting force. And at the Germany army meetings, he always fell asleep with drugs lol

Stalin was a great admirer of Hitler, even to the point of collecting Hitler memorabilia, and the USSR in general had more problems than they could deal with putting down real and perceived rebellions within their own territory. Remember that it was the Germans who helped launch the Bolshevik revolution, and the British and Americans who actively fought against it.

...An earlier comment by Lasstpak says its a pity that Dutch, Polish, Norwegian and Czech Pilots that fought and died aren't mentioned and I agree....but We Canadians made up the 2nd largest Pilot Group behind the British and were in the war from Day 1 yet we almost never ever ever get a mention that we were even in the War.... that truly pisses off many Canadians including this one.... We had tens of thousands lost or wounded.....

Visit any British Imperial War Museum & you will find plenty of reference to the contribution made by Commonwealth Forces. We Brits know who our true friends & allies are when the chips are down! Canada made a magnificient & vital contribution in both WW1 & WW2.

zoorking, The reason they didnt fit larger fuel tanks on the Me 109 was that it is quite a small aircraft and there was no extra room. On later marks such as the 109G they could fit an external drop tank but only if it was not being used as a fighter-bomber as the bomb and the drop tank were fitted in the same place.

the soviets weren't exactly "allies" of the US and UK either. Stalin wanted to pursue an idea Lenin had in the 1920s and use the "imperialistic" nations (US, UK and Germany) against each other to weaken them and either take over mainland europe by causing communistic revolutions because the people of said countries would become unhappy with the war, or just by sheer military force once his "enemies" were weakened. read up about it, its very interesting
