Hmm thats interesting... I have just noticed as I watched this, I wonder what the loco in the shed clip is? It doesn't look like silver fox. Two reasons are, at 04:23 there is no silver fox on the boiler side and at 04:06 there is no builders plate on the side. This could be an Empire A4 as they did not have shed plates on the cab-side. the ending number has also been covered up. Wonder which one it could have been??
Been there, done that. Later I got the Flying Scotsman to Newcastle at 12.35 with a Deltic and the sods held me on the south side of King Edwards Bridge for 14 minutes as we were due in at 12.54.
I belive the fireman (Kings Cross) was Ron Ruffel. Nice quiet sort of chap.
My Grandpa see 0.50 and 0.54. Thanks for putting this very special film for all to see. It is a great story of a time gone by how he, Donald, found his station and life long vocation.
Great video. I well remember waiting at Kings Cross for the arrival of the Elizabethan, always hoping to see the 64b, Haymarket, plaque on the smokebox. But why on earth does this video start with a shot of Waterloo station?
@clusterfak At least we gave some A4's... I fell in love with the class because there's one at a Museum in Green Bay about an hour north of me... Wish she'd steam...
@fordlandau Building satellites and high tech expensive equipment for the rest of the world. Just because we don't make steam engines or mine coal doesn't mean we don't have extremely prestigious and capable engineers and manufacturing in this country. Really irritates me when people don't realise this!
@edj66 I don't dispute what you say..however the basic issue is that the UK once had world-wide leadership in all things manufactured...large scale enterprises such as ship building and major engineering works (the Sydney Harbour Bridge was entirely fabricated in the UK).. this is no longer the case.
hi, I had this as part of a 3-movie collection of these British railway films entitled "Great Steam Trains". I got it when I was about 4 years old on VHS in 1990 and loved it and this is my favourite clip. Thanks very much for uploading, there was so much character in trains back then

Very interesting to see 'how things were'. I imagine setting the timetable in pre computer days must have been some job!
What dreadful verse though!

Hardly good practice, at 02.18 loading the pantry, poultry above shelf containing cakes, health inspector would have a field day.

@davidgwr The silver fox badge from the side of the engine is in the "bits and bobs" room at NRM York, if you want to at least see a bit of it.
Is that a SR Schools Class during the title screen? What was that doing at King's Cross?

@davidgwr : The jelly did not have the correct pH and thus the thing rusted before it was placedd on the dinner table !
