This is one of my favorite unveiling scene in the whole series. Challenger's "you take the cake" expression, Michiba's "oh, my..." grin, and, of course, Chariman Kaga's hand gesture.
This is probably my favourite start to any Kitchen Stadium battle: two master chefs taking their time to write their menus in beautiful calligraphy: brushes not knives, as Fukui-san said. So civilized, so refined.
One of my favourite parts of this show is when they unveil the ingredient- the enigmatic atmosphere accentuated by the dry ice, the camera shots of the chefs faces' as ideas and whole menus whiz through their minds, etc etc. BUT this is one of my fav. unveiling ingredient moment: I burst out laughing when the chairman said na-touuuuuu and did the action of the sticky beans with his hands. LOL.
He means foie gras (litterally fat liver) it is the liver of a goose or sometimes duck after being force fed large amounts of grains to have it increase in size and fatten. The birds actually also do this themselves before they migrate so they can go without food for a long time and use up this fat in their liver. The liver is as a results very firm a bit like a paste or paté. Tastes very rich and very different from normal liver, a delicatesse.
Oh man, if I were in Michiba's position I wouldn't be able to cook, I'd spend the hour laughing hysterically every time I reached for some natto and thought of Kaga's crazy announcement.
I always thought the dubbing on this show was amazing. The dialog is SO conversational it's so hard to believe these are actors reading from a script.
back when they are announcing the indreidient..i beleieve michiba is smiling because of the weird hand sign the chair man did XDDD I gotta watch that again.
I have tried natto once. Maybe I'm just not used to the taste but I found it horrible. I love Japanese food in general, but I just can't take natto. Maybe I would like it more if it were prepared by Michiba?
natto is an acquire taste. not everyone can eat them or like them. even some japanese cant even eat them. so dont feel bad if you dont like it taste..
What a good calligrapher they are!

Can anybody tell me what is natto?
VarietySelectionTV 3 years ago
Natto: Fermented Soybeans.
r4gd3 3 years ago
What about nachos?
VarietySelectionTV 3 years ago
Nachos: Tortilla chips and a thick cheese. Well, that's the cheap version.
Southern California Version: Tortilla chips, shredded cheese, guacamole(avocado... dip), a thick Mexican salsa, carne asada beef(steak), seasoning.
Or replace the tortilla chips with french fries. Hello cholesterol.

oh gosh, when the crazy host dude with the 18th century attire unveiled the pile of natto, i was drooling like crazy.

Kaga is FABULOUS in this episode. The outfit, the yelling, the gestures... This is the best I've seen him! {But, ugh, natto... Dx}
KisakiQueenie 4 years ago 5
What is Kaga wearing this time - this is the first and last time I've seen this outfit (maybe for good reason too...)
SiKedek 4 years ago 2
Nope. This is the second time for me.
The first time of course is the "Puffy shirt" Jerry wore in one of the Seinfeld episodes.
