  • There's a real dark humour in Gainsbourg's lyrics, taking the piss out of her without her realising :')

  • tres bien

  • ... Oh can't be asked anymore, tell me if the first part helped, if it did I'll Pm you the entire translation, with a little analysis.

  • "My discs are like mirrors, in which people can see me, I'm everywhere at the same time, broken in thousands of fragments of voice" (again this is a pun, éclats de voix can be translated as fragments of voice, and means shouts. So the word "éclat", which means fragment, is used as the word fragments in the first part of the verse (Broken in thousands of fragments) and is part of a saying in the second part of the verse (éclat de voix, which means voice).

  • So, the first paragraph means: "I'm a wax doll, a sound doll, my heart is engraved in my songs (note that in discs made of wax, the songs were engraved in the disc, so gainsbourg carries on with the pun), wax doll, sound doll."

"Am I better am I worse, than a doll in a living room, I see life in pink (which means, i only see what is good in life. This refers to the naiveness of the young france gall, who is just a superficial "doll" (in the song)"

  • I'm gonna try to translate. First, poupée de cire poupée de son, is a pun on words. Cire means wax, and son means sound. Because at the time discs were made out of wax, one can get the musical connotation. Poupée means doll. Dolls could also be made out of wax, and in french, "son" also means bran, which was used to stuff dolls. Hence, understood as "I'm a wax doll, a sound doll", the verse refers to music, and understood as "I'm a wax doll, a bran doll", the song refers to dolls.

  • How old was she when she FIRST song this?? And what does this song mean?

  • Is she related to Frank Sinatra??

  • I love this song and France Gall

  • Something about her voice in this is cute...like, it sounds kind of childlike. :D

  • @MaRiAtheHeDg3hOg She was a child when she sang this song.

  • @Aflowerincornfields Well then, that explains it. :D How old was she?

  • @MaRiAtheHeDg3hOg She was born in Oct 1947. Oh, she was 18 then. She did look really young, despite her choice of clothes for a 30-year woman. I love her voice. I don't like the sleazy Gainsbourg but have to admit that her best songs were with him. Later she sang her husband's songs, which were very nice. But I still think her early songs were more special.

  • delicija

  • Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son, in many of the world of pop songs and then songs that are a significant influence.

  • I love it! And i am a metalhead..:)

  • 49 people are....what? I am speechless. How can anyone NOT love France Gall?

  • Out of tune!

  • She is one of the coolest performer ever. No dancer or electronic sound, just France singing in front of a bounch of professionals musicans. Thumb's up !

  • Eu adoro a France Gall! S2

  • That'strue, her hairdress and eyeliner is the is really unrepeatable and makes her really pretty full. I like this 60's style as well

  • Terrific, she is very, very cute. However, the drums are TERRIBLE!!!!! And never mind her voice... she was CUTE, right?

  • @MowgliX

    wtf? I like her voice

  • @globogs Her voice is completely unschooled, which of course is part of her charm. But the drums... arrrghhh!

  • @MowgliX I love her voice, and i love the music. And yes, she was CUTE..:)

  • i love you

  • what is the song about? Someone french that could explain? (a)

  • @JTipTopVideoBlog France Gall sings that she's a puppet; Euh its difficult to explain because my English isn't that good (:

  • @AmberMaxe Here I'll help....She sings that she is a puppet and that the people listening to her are puppets. The song is about how all the young people in the world listen to music about love made by other young people, and how they themselves are inexperienced with love. Its a great song :)

  • @johnnymitnick Thanks! Your explanation is way better than mine! :-)

  • @AmberMaxe ah okay. But thanks anyway! ;-)

  • I love 60ies, her eyeliner and hairdo! And yes Im gay...

  • @Steffestevo joa echt wel

  • @Steffestevo Yes, you certainly are sweetie. But that's okay, me too....

  • @Steffestevo Sixtyies?

  • @Steffestevo

    Its okay to be gay

  • amazing song and beautiful women/woman! (Never learn english grammar. Haha). Too bad I wasn't born until 1990. The 60's were soo much cooler!

  • the song written by none other than......gainsbourg!!!

  • I'm really obsessed with her.shame that now has 64 years :(

  • She is so beautiful.

  • I really like this song, but this rendition is unbearable, she sings too low almost all the time!

  • Blue eyes - and she's perfect.

  • DEM LIPS <3

  • is she French? :)

  • @Natsurubeat Yeah :)

  • @genkidama2

    thanks xD

  • This reminds me of some Japanese Animation theme song.

"The Adventures of Kimiko and Mitsubishi!!!"

  • I am so tired of racist idiots ... this includes people who are racist against French people!

  • @billmull This would be a valid point if "French" was a race, but it is not. "francophobic" is more appropriate.

  • Love the sounds that were coming out of music studios in the 60's. In the US and Europe, the decade produced music so varied and creative. In ten years, you could listen to everything from Doo-Wop, to ye-ye, to British Invasion, to folk...

  • At 1:04 she looks like the cutest dictator the world has ever seen.

  • @tordyveln no

  • halt schön...que bonio. eu aodorre only nice.....

  • the guy who married her.. is one lucky bastard... :D

  • @ArtOfCreation11 It Was.Because Unfortunately he's...well...dead...

  • @TheHiroshima75 sorry i didn't know that..

  • @ArtOfCreation11 the guy that married her once is claude francois

the one who sang "comme d'habitude" a worldwide song

    sorry for my english

  • @ArtOfCreation11

Michel Berger married her, he died. Claude François did date her but I don't think they got married.

Berger wrote lots of song for France Gall, most of her career is made of Berger's songs and, of course Gainsbourg's (who wrote this one)

  • to ArtOfCreation11 : her husband was a great composer. Now, he rests in peace... the term "bastard" is not appropriate...

  • @MrGrenouilleverte yes i know it's not appropriate but, when i wrote this comment i didn't know he passed away.. i get a lot's of reply's daily about this comment, and everyone are telling me that... :(

  • @ArtOfCreation11

HAHA it's okay, I'd say France is the one who got lucky 'cause she got to be in contact with so much great artists : Gainsbourg, Berger, Balavoine, Coluche, Claude François (he's an horrible man though, when she won the Eurovision with this song she called him and he said that she sung all wrong etc ... Gainsbourg despised him a lot x)

    Aaaah French Drama x)

  • @MrGrenouilleverte I want to defend 'Art of Creation - not that he can't defend himself. If you're British, the use of 'bastard' like this doesn't have any pejorative meaning. It's just a throwaway word, as in 'lucky bastard', 'handsome bastard', etc; it doesn't imply any animosity or disprespect. That's the danger of the written word, somebody will take you literally and miss your true meaning.

  • @ArtOfCreation11

She married Michel Berger in 1976. He died of a heart attack at age 44 in 1992, on a tennis court.

In the above video, she's 17 (or 18), as she was born in October 1947.

  • @ArtOfCreation11 He died of a heart attack at the age of 45.

  • @vania1917 i heard that.... :(

  • This deserves more then a MILLION views :)

  • @514films it has more than one million wiews..[iminent=FHLkhAgUWfOB]

  • I adored this song ... this's a bit from my youth

  • finally, I've found the woman I want to marry

  • @cwegcweg make me nigger :D

  • she cant sing for shit, but she looks good!

  • Lol

  • J'adore!!!Je suis FAN!!!

  • the hungarian version by "Folk Error" is better in my opinion.

  • A Eurovision classic.

  • My second most favourite eurovision song ever, after Moldova 2009 :)

  • i don't know why, but she reminds me of keira knightley

anyway, love this song..one of my favorites

  • @mulan4ever14

she reminds me sienna miller :)

  • Where went ESC wrong? In this year the song, voice and perhaps the look of the artist that mattered. Good live music and a good artist with a good song was important. Just look at Azerbaijan 2011. They had to use Swedish choreography and choires. Not much Azerbaijan in that. They didn't even show this girls clothes, just the face. That's what matters. No important dance, no important clothes, just a good song.

  • I love how she moves her head :)

  • Me encanta esta cancion, ¡que pasada! J'adore cette chanson, qui durent!

    Donostia, Euskadi.
