The Orca is (in my humble opinion) the most intelligent and most well rounded animal in the animal kingdom. The Orca is the only animal known to actually stalk and kill a Great White Shark. There are certain pods of Orcas that know if they come from underneath the shark turn said shark on its side quickly, the shark will be paralyzed and unable to defend itself. Researchers have just found this out in the last decade or so.
Someone help me out on this - It's sounds like there's wind in this recording, but can you hear the whales if you were standing on a ship or at the beach or do you need waterproof recording equipment?
These beautiful, highly intelligent mammals belong in the oceans. They were never meant to be domesticated or penned in parks. The average life span of an orca in captivity is 25 years compared to some wild orcas who have been documented to live over 80 years.
I also think it's horrible that they keep these creatures in water tanks and in zoo's! It's abuse! You don't treat intelligent animals like that. In fact, you don't treat any animal like that... I'm against locking up animals.
Wow, Dave, I didn't realize that your Orca Song video had become so popular! BTW, if anyone has questions about whales and dolphins, they should visit the American Cetacean Society's website for information before posting speculations on YouTube.
Did you know long ago killer whales and dolphins used to live on land? Their bodies have adapt to living in the oceans. At least that is what scientists say.
@iamher87 Actually, they were given the name, and names similar to it, over two thousand years ago. They have been talked about since ancient times, well before the Spanish Sailors saw them and gave them that name. And they didn't see them eating a corpse, they saw the whales working as a group to take down whales larger than themselves for eating. =) Again, Orcinus means "belonging to the realms of the dead" or "bringer of death." In Latin.
Rachel: Just out of curiosity, what's the most intelligent? The bottlenose? Aren't there some scientists who think the orca is actually more intelligent?
@DavidNeiwert Yes but scientists all argue with the correct way to measure intelligence, but by many orcas are recently considered the ultimate hunter above great white sharks along with the most intelligent. They are also believed to be going through an evolution right now which would be really cool :-)
@DavidNeiwert Orca's have larger brains, better memories and a more diverse culture. Bottlenose have self-awareness and the capacity for humour. Needless to say it's a subject to much controversy, they are both incredibly intelligent Cetaceans.
Orca's come from the family Delphinidae, the latin scientific name is Orcinus orca, the genus name Orcinus means "of the kingdom of the dead". your talking to someone who's studid orca for all her 18 year old life. the name Killer whale dervies from the fact they kill whales. they are infact of the delphinidae family aka dolphin and are the largest of the dolphin family. They are the top predator of the sea and are the second most intelligent aquatic animal in the world
@RachelBalsdon Did you also know there are three to five different types of Orca? Also, The genus, Orcinus, translates to "belonging to the realms of the dead" or "bringer of death." in Latin. It was given the name for it's ability to kill, and not always eat what they kill, but sometimes to play with it, and for how they hunt...and not just whales. Also, the sea cucumber is the top predator of the sea, though dolphins are deffinatly of the most intelligent creatures on this planet. >_>;
jilicker your absolutley correct whales and dolphins carry a very important frequency for earth and the history of all that ever was ...we need them universally, spritually and historically.

Lol i guess im lucky being a submariner. Im a sonar operator so i get to hear these wonderful creatures chatting to each other all the time. And yeah they are very curious about us. They come really close just to see who and what we are. I guess its because we're making an unfamiliar noise to them
They have fun when hunting of course, every predator does. However Orca's have never killed a human in the wild so would you all relax and listen to the songs?
God, hopefully you all would be able to spell correct?! An mammal or animal will only attack if feeling threatened or protecting a pod member..do your homework in marine biology..I have dove with sharks..and "we" are more of the threat to them..humans kill over 100 million sharks a year and countless whales..what's the cost?? we are destroying our closet living mammals..
yeah @davidjames308 but also keep in mind that recently whaling became illegal so whales are making a recovery but the japanese are still killing counless dolphins
@darkcheerio89 japanese still kill just as much whales as they did before they don't give a flying crap about what rules are being set up.. someone should seriously do something about that.
@maartsvenson orcas don't attack or hunt or kill humans on purpose ONLY when they feel threatened most ''dead by orca'' causes are because the orcas didn;t realize humans are fragile and easily die and can;t breathe underwater
@Niiiiiiickk Orcas comes from the word Ornicus orca, as their latin scietific name says they are from the dolphins family and share many characteristics as gathering in gangs to kill individuals bigger than them as blue whales. The name Ornicus means corpse, simply because sailor saw orcas eating corpses of whales.

Wonderful. Until at 7 minutes, when you hear how horrid whiney engine noise sounds compared to the residents calls. Sad, but how this urban strait life is nowadays.

Besides, your reasoning has a significant flaw.
Assuming you are right, why should they feel threatened by humans.
Oracas are

AT times they do sound like their screaming for help. Sometimes they do sound peaceful. I love the whaley whales. My favorite animals of the Sea!!

I LOVED Killer Whales when I was a kid! My favorite movie was infact, Free Willy! I still lOVE Free Willy! This video is so AWESOME I felt bad for the whales who have been caputred and taken away from the families!

I love orcas! It makes you feel like they are a foot in front of you to watch this. Great video and thank you for sharing it with all of us.

Wonderful. Until at 7 minutes, when you hear how horrid whiney engine noise sounds compared to the residents calls. Sad, but how this urban strait life is nowadays.
