@vversusv My son was born 2 days before this suberbowl. I thought if we're at the hospital, attention is going to be on the game instead of my wife having the baby, but it worked out ok.
Denver safties where not overrated watch steve atwater in superbowl 32 and tell me if he was overrated. the problem with the 1989 denver broncos is they did not have the right team built around johnn elway, and they 49ers where to much for anyone to handle, watch how the 49ers played the other playoff teams that year
Denver's defense was just awful against any decent team. they couldn't stop the browns the week before in the second half of theat game and they brought that right into the Super Bowl. Dennis Smith and Steve Atwater were two of the most overrated safties in NFL history who couldn't cover ANYBODY! Even denver's only TD was bogus. A disgrace.
@Jeff051176 but was so funny as hell, dont get me wrong, but too bad i had ended up crying my eyes out, when the bills had lost to the giants on sb 25, a year later.... Jason+
I miss player introductions at the Super Bowl, this come out as a team crap is stupid. Guys work their whole careers to get there they should be recognized.
I remember the day when this game was played. I was 18, and I had to work that night so I couldn't the game off. I was sacking groceries at a grocery store, when I asked a customer who was winning the game and he told me the 49ers won 55-10. I thought he was joking, so after I got off work, I went straight home and checked the score, and he was right. The 49ers did actually win by the 55-10 score.
That game was a joke, a terrible blowout. I had already changed the channel around the 3rd quarter. Also I've always thought that the 3D graphics of the first-half 90s were the best, it sure beats the 2D crap that came later on in the decade.
I remember The Pat Sajak show, nothing really special about it. Who knows, it could have done well had he not came out during Arsenio's time.
@ChristianKidsShowFan Of all the thing s you could levy against the AFC during that 13 yr SB streak. was the fact that the AFC teams, to me were not as physical and I think that lead to the weakness in defense among those teams.
I'm posting this on the day of Super Bowl XLIV, February 7.
Interesting what many sports websites are saying about the effect of the outcome of the Super Bowl on Peyton Manning's legacy. There are those who say by beating the Saints, Manning ought to be considered the greatest QB ever even ahead of Montana.
I've witnessed both QBs as a Bears fan. At Super Bowl XLI, the final was mainly due to the Bears playing badly. In the NFC title games, Montana absolutely shredded defenses the Bears.
@TurtlesandWolves So are you saying that because of lack of coverage that is Joes fault or are you making another statement? I am sorry I can say that Jerry was wide open and running all over the Bronco's secondary that day but I am not following you.
Your right, Montana did have Rice...for his last 2 Superbowls. He won his first two without him. You make it sound like Peyton had no good recievers. Do the names Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne ring a bell?
@ultraback29 20 years later, here's a super bowl on cbs. At the time, I thought football was kinda boring since I was 7 and autistic. But when I grew up, I started to enjoy the game as much as I liked my baseball.
A considerable amount of time has passed. Two decades of football have been completed since then and what these 49ers did still impresses me.
Many consider the '85 Bears the best ever. As a long-time, die-hard Bears fan, if a fantasy tournament of greatest NFL teams could ever happen, I would have to say that the two teams I fear the most would be the '84 49ers and the '89 49ers, both led by Montana.
I remember on Halftime that there was a glitch in the sound and it was awful. Brent Musburger made an analogy to that with the poor play by the Broncos LOL!
I'm probably the only one who cares about this...but am I the only one who notices that, at least for awhile, CBS was prone to changing their NFL themes on Super Bowls? I mean, they did it with this one, they did it two years later...
The Bud Bowl was more exciting than this game. Pretty amazing that Elway carried 3 mediocre Bronco teams to the Super Bowl by himself. He is the greatest QB ever.
The 49ers were head and shoulders above every team in 1989 except for the NY Giants...the Rams victory over the Giants in the playoffs ensured a SB title for the Niners because the Giants were really the only team that could play with them
@ apollo... yep, nfl network showed that '91 ATL/SF game not too long ago...and mike pritchard clearly false started on the hail mary play. but those are the breaks. go niners!
redskins were head and shoulders the best in '91. the 49ers were head and shoulders the best in '94. the broncos were head and shoulders the best in '98. the patriots were head and shoulders the best in '03.
The only who could really challenge the '91 Skins was the 49ers that year..The 49ers always played stronger in December, and finished the year winning 6 in a row..BUT they didn't make the playoffs, NFC West was very tough that year(THAT FUCKING FLUKE HAIL MARY WIN BY THE FALCONS WAS THE DIFFERENCE)...I remember the 49ers embarrassing the Bears( a playoff team) on Monday night football, 52-14...Nobody wanted the Niners in the playoffs..
Also idster, the 49ers AND the two-time defending champion Cowboys were head and shoulders the best in 1994..The 1998 Broncos I think had 2 challengers, the '98 Vikings and '98 49ers..Funny how when the Falcons played both teams the lost key players(G.Hearst and then John Randall)...No parity team is head and shoulders the best, so the '03 Patriots don't count, otherwise the '07 Pats would of finished 19-0...The 1989 49ers were like the 1985 Bears, THERE WERE NO SERIOUS CHALLENGERS...
Stop saying the '98 49ers were real challengers. You bring up a fluke Hail Mary...well what about that OBVIOUS fumble by Jerry Rice that wasn't called on the final drive? Jeez...the Falcons beat the 49ers TWICE in '98...they were the better team. So kill that noise...
Now, the 1989 49ers were HEAD and SHOULDERS above everyone that year. They were a professional team on a clear mission to prove they were more than the 'genius' of Bill Walsh.
@idster7: The Pats were never head and shoulders over the league. Their 01 and 03 title teams were a fluke, and the 04 team was good, but Donovan McNabb gave them the Super Bowl that year.
And, as far as SB XXIV is concerned, If Elway faced this 49er team with Shanahan as coach, and with the offense that he had in the late-90's on his side, he could have beaten this 49er team. Reeves was a joke as far as offense was concerned, and Elway didn't have any real teammates on offense back then.
@a7b7c78 Stop smoking crack! This '89 49ers team was one of the best NFL teams of all time! Neither the '97 nor the '98 teams would've beaten this team. No sir you're wrong!
@madrecka: Denver's 1997 team had several Pro Bowl players on offense, like Elway, Terrell Davis, Rod Smith, McCaffrey, Shannon Sharpe, and Gary Zimmerman. They also had a defense that made plays in Super Bowls instead of giving up the big play.
Someone did a line of scrimmage analysis of Super Bowl winners recently that took into account each team's rankings at stopping the run and running the ball, and Denver's SB winners rated ahead of the 89 Niners in that stat(con't).
@a7b7c78 The '97 and '98 Broncos had great teams no doubt and they the Super Bowls each of those years; but you're telling me that the NFC teams of that era didn't have great offenses: The Redskins(who in '87 whooped your Broncos 42-10); my 49ers in '89 who whooped your Broncos as I said before; The AFC back then were more known for offense aka The Oilers(run and shoot); the Bills(K gun offense); the Bengals(in '88 with their no huddle offense). The NFC back then had better defense.
@madrecka: I think that the Denver O-line would have done to the Niners what they did to the Packers in SB XXXII, and that is dominate them at the line of scrimmage, and control the ball against the 89 Niner defense, who didn't have as big of a front wall as the 97 Pack did. They wore big 360-pound Gilbert Brown out in that Super Bowl. Imagine what they would do to Michael Carter. The 89 Niners never played an offense that good. None of the NFC teams that won in that era did.
@a7b7c78 Plus I will say this the Broncos had the 49ers West Coast offense just like the Packers did. I'm refering to the late '90s Broncos who won Super Bowls. Well if you check out the NFL Networks polls or any other football Super Bowl polls the '89 49ers are rated higher than the '97 Broncos or the '98 team. Even the '84 and '94 49ers are rated higher than the late '90s Broncos teams! Word up!
@madrecka: Denver and Green Bay did run a variation of the West Coast, but it wasn't the same thing. Sure, they used principles of the offense, but they had QB's with stronger arms in Elway and Favre that could throw downfield better. Denver also had more of a power running game than the Niners usually had.
And, when I said that thing about offenses, I meant the Super Bowl. The NFC teams usually didn't face great offenses in their era of dominance, except for Buffalo(con't).
@madrecka: However, the Bills were more of a finesse offense that was flashy. When they met a tougher and stronger NFC East team in the Super Bowl, they crumbled. They didn't win the battles at the line of scrimmage in those Super Bowls. The 88 Bengals may have been the team that could match up with one of those more physical NFC teams during that era because of their running game and O-line.
@a7b7c78 Yes and the '88 Bengals lost to the 49ers that year 20-16; you forgot to mention the '84 49ers shut down the Dolphins with Marino that year when he set the NFL passing TD record(48) which wasn't broken until Manning passed him in '05 and Brady in
'07. You bring valid points to the table regarding the Broncos and Packers ran a variation of the West Coast offense but Denver did have a great RB in Davis and physical O-line in '97 and '98; where as the '80s and early '90s(cont)
@a7b7c78 49ers teams with Montana and Young ran the original West coast offense with a short passing game, running game with traps and off tackle and vertical passing game downfield to confuse defenses. Oh yea Favre and Elway had a stronger arm than Montana but Joe was more accurate and he had a soft touch to his passes to Rice,Taylor, Clark and Solomon along with Craig out of the backfield.
@madrecka: Actually, the original West Coast offense isn't the Niner system, but the system that Sid Gillman created with the AFL Chargers. Don Coryell also used it in college and the pros as well. It is more of a downfield game. Bill Walsh was a RB coach with the 66 Raiders. Al Davis brought that offense to Oakland, and Walsh probably took it with him to the Bengals when he started there as an assistant in 1968(con't).
@madrecka: When Greg Cook couldn't play anymore after 1969, Walsh had to use QB Virgil Carter, who was more of a short passer, so he had to tweak his attack. That was where he started using the offense that Ken Anderson, Montana, and others benefitted greatly from.
@a7b7c78 I agree with you on that one. But the West Coast offense became legendary with 49ers in the '80s with Montana and offense being led by Walsh. Walsh learned it from Sid Gilliam
@eyeontv I find it odd that someone would consider what amounts to a downgrade from the previous theme better than one of the best sports theme songs of all time...
@untexan: i agree i remember hearing this really well back in 1990 and 91, and despite this game being a blowout, i remembrer it very well...remember that the afc was weak in '89 compared to the nfc,
Am i the only one who finds it dumb that there's clips of O.J. Simpson and Jim Brown in that Montage at the start when they never played in a Super Bowl?
The Daytona 500 promoted here for Feb 18 has become known as one of the most infamous in history. Dale Earnhardt dominated the race, only to blow a tire on the final corner of the final lap, and lose the race to the unlikeleist of winners: Derrike Cope in the Puorlator car. Dale would go on to win the race 8 years later in a most triumphant victory, only to be killed in the same race on Feb 18, 2001.
I know the Simpsons ran their 4th ep "There's no disgrace like home." against the Super Bowl at 8:30 est. I'm sure by then the 49ers had it locked up so a lot of bored people switched to FOX.
Great stuff. And it harkens back to the good old days, when Summerall was drunk like a skunk.
"Weather conditions, not a factor. Not ever here." Thanks, Pat. Still he's the greatest to ever call a game.
Also more awkward, the Bud Bowl spot featuring Musberger and Bradshaw. One could easily make the case based on other clips, that Brent should have been the guy in the cowboy attire.

Anyone notice how in all 3 Dan Reeves-coached Super Bowls, Denver constantly kept hemorrhaging points in the Super Bowl. Consider the following
1. 30 points in 2nd half of Super Bowl XXI
2. 35 points in 2nd QUARTER of Super Bowl XXII (in addition to 30 2nd half points in the AFC title game vs. Cleveland)
3. 55 points in this game (and this was supposed to be the best defensive team of the 3).
How's that for NFC domination?

Oh yea Favre and Elway had a stronger arm than Montana but Joe was more accurate and he had a soft touch to his passes to Rice,Taylor, Clark and Solomon along with Craig out of the backfield.
madrecka 1 year ago
@madrecka: Actually, the original West Coast offense isn't the Niner system, but the system that Sid Gillman created with the AFL Chargers. Don Coryell also used it in college and the pros as well. It is more of a downfield game. Bill Walsh was a RB coach with the 66 Raiders. Al Davis brought that offense to Oakland, and Walsh probably took it with him to the Bengals when he started there as an assistant in 1968(con't).
a7b7c78 1 year ago
@madrecka: When Greg Cook couldn't play anymore after 1969, Walsh had to use QB Virgil Carter, who was more of a short passer, so he had to tweak his attack. That was where he started using the offense that Ken Anderson, Montana, and others benefitted greatly from.
a7b7c78 1 year ago
@a7b7c78 I agree with you on that one. But the West Coast offense became legendary with 49ers in the '80s with Montana and offense being led by Walsh. Walsh learned it from Sid Gilliam

@a7b7c78 You forget the '89 Broncos had the #1 defense in the NFL and the 49ers destroyed them in the Super Bowl.

Every year, Bud Bowl was more exciting than the Super Bowl.

Na'ah...the Bengals/49ers had a slightly better ending than Bud Bowl I lol

Call me crazy but I think this theme is underrated.
untexan 2 years ago 14
I completely agree, much better than the one that followed, this one has good energy.
eyeontv 2 years ago
@eyeontv I find it odd that someone would consider what amounts to a downgrade from the previous theme better than one of the best sports theme songs of all time...
fatmanfiftythousand 10 months ago
@eyeontv - I agree, I liked this theme but not as much as the "pots and pans" theme between 86-88. That one was the best.
Jeff051176 4 months ago
@untexan: i agree i remember hearing this really well back in 1990 and 91, and despite this game being a blowout, i remembrer it very well...remember that the afc was weak in '89 compared to the nfc,

"Weather conditions not a factor... Not EVER here!" Did that foreshadow something?

It's true, this 49ers blow-out literally set up a Louisiana blow-out 15 years in the making!

Wow, the SuperDome looked so clean back then. I was in New Orleans just a couple of weeks ago, and the dome looked so nasty, almost rust colored

Well certain things will cause that.

Two Great Voiceover Artists:
Don LaFontaine - movie trailer king selling CBS News.
Ernie Anderson - the Voice of the ABC Network pitching Bud Bowl.
RIP you powerfully great-sounding guys!!!!

Ernie Anderson, the original voice of ABC covered this game on CBS?
megamanj2004X 2 years ago
No, Ernie Anderson promoted the fictional "Bud Bowl". Pat Summerall and John Madden called the real game.

I know the Simpsons ran their 4th ep "There's no disgrace like home." against the Super Bowl at 8:30 est. I'm sure by then the 49ers had it locked up so a lot of bored people switched to FOX.
Nickrj3 2 years ago
Nowadays, on Super Bowl Sunday, the networks that don't cover the game air either reruns or a movie.
mediadude08 2 years ago
Do you have more of super bowl xxi coverage on cbs?
crawford371 2 years ago
Cool graphics, the theme could use some work. I'd rather take the "Pots and Pans".
MrLogoman007 2 years ago
Great stuff. And it harkens back to the good old days, when Summerall was drunk like a skunk.
"Weather conditions, not a factor. Not ever here." Thanks, Pat. Still he's the greatest to ever call a game.
Also more awkward, the Bud Bowl spot featuring Musberger and Bradshaw. One could easily make the case based on other clips, that Brent should have been the guy in the cowboy attire.
FOXSportsFan 2 years ago
Quite funny, considering this was the last Super Bowl Brent worked for CBS.

Quite possibly the worst Super Bowl of all time

Agreed. The Bud Bowl was more engrossing than the actual game.
