  • thank u i will hopefully test it out soon :)

  • Great video thank you for sharing your putting tips and putting secrets. I have lots of trouble with my putting and now I am going to put your putting strategies into practice to try and improve my results.

  • nice video... you do a great job of explaining your techniques. can't wait to try em on the gold course

  • thank you so much. it really helped me and now i can see a big difference in my putting. if its not into the hole its always closer to the given area.. thankyou so much.

  • I have been teaching boating for the past 30 years. Although boating and golfing aren't the same, the teaching methods remain the same. I can truly say that you have unique teaching skills. You are making your lessons easy for everyone to understand and your step by step demonstrations are just perfect. Thank you for your time, enthousiasm and please keep up the good work.

  • Thank you very much for the putting lesson

    from australia

  • The point you made about using your pectoral muscles to bring the putter back and through the ball really helped me.. it was the first time I've heard that and it just clicked in my head when you said it. Great Vid!!

  • You have saved me at least 5strokes per 18 with these tips. I cant thank you enough. Ive madce my high school golf team now 3years in a row because of you.

  • Just got your DVDs .... awesome! Should I post this here or on your website forum?? I practice with the grip you use (double overlap) keeping grip going in between pads of hand. I noticed that the heel of the putter is little off the ground(Odyssey white hot #1). I probably have to get another putter with a different angle right?

  • Started swinging golf clubs for the first time about 3 weeks ago. I have a 7 and an 8 iron, and a putter, all for $2 a piece from the thrift store. I practice at a park because I'm too broke to hit the courses, but I'm swinging nice and straight with my irons. Before this video I had no idea how to use my putter but now I'm glad I bought it. I can't wait to find a suitable spot to call my poor man's practice green

  • Thank you Shawn for this video. My putting has 'gone off the boil' at the moment, so I will work through your video the next time I'm out on the course. I can undersand where I'm going wrong and will try to put it right. Thanks again.

  • Shawn, another legendary lesson. You're always so clear and concise and use great thought provoking words and analogies. I have a grass whip on order. Thanks again

  • How many putts did this guy actually end up making?

  • Watched this video after losing confidence with my putting. So many tips in one video. Focusing on the correct muscles, hanging from the shoulders and the longer follow through really helped. Putting at the weekend was a joy. Many thanks @clemshaw

  • Thanks,, you are the best teacher on youtube... and I'm really saying this truthfully. I'm a 3 handicap and check YOUR stuff only for tips, everyone else I really don't trust. Could you do something for the 5 footers? I noticed that you use a SeeMore Putter too. I've had one for 2 years now and love it!!

  • @titleistprov69 This distance is very important; the key here is to feel that once you are set up, that the putt is no longer under your control; you have already lined up, set-up and now it is all about letting momentum put the ball into the hole for you; no not steer it!!

    Shawn

  • @titleistprov69 i have to agree you r the best i seen keep the good work, you should be the one te at the golf chanel ..

  • Great video!

Right to the point and excellent demo.

    Loved it !!!

  • looks like will ferrell

  • Great Video, how would you deal with a putt that is 3 foot vs 10 Foot?

    Shorter backswing or Follow through?

    Thanks

    Jason

  • Hello, thanks for a great tutorial. On my back swing, should my eyes remain on the ball or follow the putter head?

  • ClemShaw, just wanted to say this was very informative! My favorite part (and one I will be practicing now) was determining the speed of a putt. Before this video, I would apply too much force on some putts. Now I'll bring that 'reference' ability to the course the next time I'm out and try to putt it in the hole, or at least get it in tap-in reach. Thanks for doing what you do!

  • Shawn, love the video. Any recommendation on putter style? Blade or mallet? Thx

  • @angoorkha I have classics from both and enjoy using putters from both styles; keeps the stroke alive and well!

    Shawn

  • @clemshaw Enjoy the video a lot. I typically drain all of my putts within 6ft. However, in the last week I seem to have hit a slump. I missed about 4 par putts from inside 4 ft the other day and this has happened to me in several rounds in the last 10 days or so. Do golfers go through a putting slump the same way baseball players go through hitting slumps? I don't want to change my putting stoke but I'm wondering if it's time to make changes or if I should just be patient and ride this out?

  • Dear Mr. ClemShaw, im just now beginning in golf and i am having trouble with the breaks i know the clubhead should point towards the hole but if i hit straight at the hole it will break and ill miss the putt by a long shot. however if i point the clubhead towards the break the ball still ends up on not going towards the hole because of the club head. what should i do?

  • Dear Mr ClemShaw, I enjoy your putting lesson a great deal. I wonder if you can give me advice on putting in pressure moments. I, at times miss even the short putts. Especally when I really need to make them. Do you have any advice on the 3 foot to 1 foot putts? Is there certain mental preparations that one goes through when walk up to that putt? Thank you in advance in responding.

  • great video as per, but when i hang the putter so it feels comfortable, as i take the putter away my legs get in the way of my hands and have to re route it away which produces a lot of pulls, not sure what to do about this conundrum

  • @ellsimpseone You just need to bend more forward from the hips to give your arm-putter unit a bit more room; see also my putting tip in the "mental baseball game part 2; shawn clement" video; you are almost in the ideal spot to putt from! :) Shawn

  • Great video, one question, iv been getting lessons to fix my slices, from my irons and driving. I have got this fixed but I still feel uncomfortable and lees confident in my swing, now when I hit my shots Instead of hitting slice shots I hit duff ones, any ideas? Many thanks

  • Dear Clemshaw,

I enjoy all of your videos and am trying to improve my technique. I have problems keeping my putter head straight and end up hitting the ball with an open head. Is it okay to put my right arm elbow out to minimize wrist movement?

  • @searay32 I would go cross handed and then check out my latest video on putting; go to my home page on you tube by clicking on my username and you will see the videos on the right are all in chronological order; see the first one on the list which is the latest;

    Shawn

  • Great Instructions!!! Two thumbs UP

  • I'd tap dat! xD

  • Dear ClemShaw. Your discussion of alignment was very good. I've been experimenting with different putting methods and the most important factor is alignment. I wound up with a position where I face the hole and focus on the target with my binocular vision. Radically different but soooo much easer and more consistent. Method tested at the World Golf Hall of Fame Putting Championship. Came in 2nd. Beat many traditional putters. Click my name to see a video.

  • @jaxfl2 Very cool! Thank you for posting; you have a nice technique there that is very worthwhile and sound; very instinctive! Shawn

  • You tell yourself to aim at the right edge on a 2'' breaking putt, but your mind takes over and sure enough you putt the ball over the right edge. Your mind adds 2 more inches so the ball goes where you are 'aiming'. How do you aim? Where you want to start the ball or at the hole and let your 'feel' take over?

  • @gregrutz You always want to aim the action of the arm-putter unit; see my "tuning the putting stroke" and "perpetually putting" videos; Shawn

  • why does so much putting instruction i see preach "keep eyes over ball"?

  • i have my pratice putting green up and im getting it in every time thanks

  • I have a question. It feels like when im up to putt the (clock effect) does not work. It happens too much. I'm thinking that it's because of my body is not in that Y shape and maybe my hands and putter is not under my shoulders. Do you suggest that long putter.

  • @RebornLayneStaley Before doing that, you need to go see more of my videos on putting and then see the man himself, Geoff Mangum at "putting zone" dot com.

See "golf pro lesson fine tuning the putting stroke" and "golf pro lesson perpetual putting" as well as "golf pro lesson leaving putts short". Shawn

  • Great video love the studio. Are you a v1 guy or a gasp vido guy.

  • @4golfonline Very rarely do I do video analysis anymore; it is mostly for new students who have issues matching their perception to reality; when the perception matches, the need is gone; Hogan didn't have it and we still marvel at his swing...:) Shawn

  • Nice Lesson.. Helped me a lot..Hope to improve me handicap :P

  • nice..i just bought an odyssey dfx putter..my first xpensive putter and now i feel with this lesson it is going to make a difference

  • I have been playing for three months now. I have had problems getting a feel for distance and speed while putting. This video goes along way towards accomplishing that. Now I have a reference point from which to start. THANKS!

  • THANK YOU

  • Wow, you've got to be the next Golf Channel instructor for sure. You deliver in a comfortable and understandable way.

  • This is the best putting tutorial I've ever watched. I have watched this over 10 times.

  • Really helpful. Nice manner

  • I want you to be the next Golf Channel instructor!!!!!

  • @ekcom1 Thank you for your kind words; make sure you give my video on their website the thumbs up! Go to the golf channel's instructor search page; find my video in the list and click on the thumbs up logo on the right hand side of the video; I appreciate all the support as we need to get their attention; so please tell your friends too! :) Thanks again, Shawn

  • great lesson, thanks for the tips!

  • I found when i put i see to not follow through with the ball i would simply hit and retreave the club, as a result of missing plenty of shot's i learnt how not to miss and become a very good novice at putting, Thanks ;)

  • Great putting lesson... The best I've seen! Keep up the good work and thanks.

  • Thanks Shawn awesome video! I was having a real hard time getting the plane of the putter correct (had the electric eel kinda stroke).....After watching this I changed pretty much EVERYTHING.......and it was the best decision i ever made! Thanks a bunch dude!

  • Speaking as a complete novice I found that very useful.

  • Great video, I wish I found it earlier though.

  • HI MISTER Clemshaw im having a very hard time with my putting iv hade back surgey and cant bend over my touch is good i judge breaks very good but i cant aim

is there a more upright puting stance

  • Shawn-

I was wondering i have the best looking swing of all my playing partners and looks quite like rory mcilroys ive compared them but i play off the highest handicap of 11 and its quite anoying ive worked so hard on it and my playing partners swings look awful but they hit it so well so is it better to have a good looking swing or a bad looking swing and hit it well?

  • Great tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to make this. I've just recently taken up golf 4 months ago but only played on the course 3 times of which I've improved tremendously apart from putting. I never realised how detrimental bad putting could be to your end shot tally. lol

  • Thanks. Great tutorial.

  • Definitely one of the best videos I have ever watched.

It was very specific and it felt like this guy was in front of me giving me lessons.

I actually never thought of lining the writing to my putting line, such a great method that I never would have thought of.

    Thanks so much!

  • Very nice...I like how you weren't vague how most instructions are. The best part was telling on what muscles to use.

  • Thanks for sharing such in depth knowledge. I find this the most detailed putting tutorial online!,

  • i think you should be on the golf channel and be on the golf fix with Michael Breed and teach golf. you would be amazing

  • excellent video. you cured my putting woes i think with your set up advice, i'll see tomorrow, if i win, you're the man!

  • I've been fighting a "path" issue, this was helpful thanks Shawn.

  • hm, ive never been able to get the right length of my putts because i always force my putter to go faster instead of just taking a longer back stroke, thank you so much dude

  • very helpful fundamentals, THANKS!

  • Great video Shawn!! This video will help me win more skins from my golf buddies!!

  • Thanks for putting up this video, I am going to try it out now.

  • shawn,

ive had the same putter for almost ten years now and when i was younger i always choked up almost to the bottom of the grip because it was too big for me, but now i still putt that way out of force of habit as it is the only comfortable way for me to hold it... i may be hunched over way too much and lose a lot from my stroke. would it be best to try and adjust my stance and straighten up or should i just stick with what is more comfortable and what im used to, even if its incorrect?

  • Thats one of the best, simplest putting lesson I have ever had :) Thanks

  • great stuff. thanks.

  • Shawn-

Do you allow the hands to hover over the turf before you start the backswing. I have found that alot of times when I ground the putter before starting a putt, I hit the turf before the ball. Is this b/c I am swaying and I dont notice or b/c Im bringing the putter back to the grounded position natrually? Nothin like hitting the green in two and embarrassing yourself like this!!

  • @gdevons Hovering the arm-putter unit is very important as it allows you to feel the weight of this unit so that you may feel the momentum properly; see "golf pro lesson perpetually putting" and "golf pro lesson fine tuning the putting stroke"

    Shawn

  • Good man! This has really helped.

  • Great vid!! the best putting vid I have come across to date.. Lets hope with this in mind it will help my putting. as its costing me a lot of shots and money lol.. Thanks

Will be checking out you other vids as well. Top Job

  • Great lesson Shawn! I have watched many video's and read many article's on putting. This is, BY FAR, the best lesson! Thanks for taking the time to give this lesson. It has improved my putting game drastically. Keep em coming! ;)

  • when you where talking about looking with your eyes from behind the ball it made so much sense i have always did that then rearranged myself when i went up to the ball. Thanks for the video it helped alot

  • I appreciate the time you took to provide us with these tips! Hopefully you will keep em coming! ;)

  • I have watched and read somewhere between 75-100 tips on putting and this is by far THE best video/tutorial I have found! Thanks for taking the time to break down 'putting'. Time to get to work! Again GREAT video!

    Thanks Shawn!

  • Are the only variables of putting 1. Angle of shaft at impact 2. Path of club 3. Face square to target (close, square, open) .........Ive been trying to think of more but thats all i can come up with...If these variables are correct, your going to hit a perfect putt, disregarding speed...

  • I love your tutorials I watch them regularly and they have helped me tremendously!! I have to say you and Jeff Ritter are the only two people that I consider worthy of giving great and understandable lessons and I can watch both of you for hours and feel truly schooled!! Thanks and keep up the great work!

  • Thank you very much for the kind words and comment! Shawn

  • What is your take on impact..im hearing alot now that you want the blade to be slightly bowed or angled down...that way the ball gets rolling on the ground right away (they slowed it down and you saw how the normal putting stroke impact puts a very small amount of backspin on it...which makes the ball bounce...you may have made avideo on this already but im not sure...thanks for all the advice

  • @pawndominance1,

Ideally the ball would come off the face with a little bit of topspin, allowing it to roll true and not skid off the putter.

The mechanics of it is similar to hitting a topspin forehand in tennis, the putter is moving slightly up into the ball with a solid hand position (no wrist breakdown). Play the putter in the centre of your stance and the ball just forward of that. From there, just maintain a solid "letter Y" with your arm club unit as you swing the putter with momentum.

  • @clemshaw ..well if the ideal hit would be a slight top spin, you would putt more like phil mickelson...a spine tilt, with a leaned clubface...almost,wehn exagerated, like hitting a driver if you know what i mean

  • @pawndominance1,

A big change in setup and technique manipulations isn't really necessary to get that topspin type roll. With the ball slightly forward of centre, the putter will naturally be rising slightly into impact. You're on the right track, just avoid making manipulations to achieve a true roll, proper ball position and letting gravity track the stroke will take care of it for you.

  • Can you comment on the importance of the lie angle and face balance of a putter ? You seem to have a straight back and through stroke ...does your putter have an upright lie angle ? Is it a face balanced putter ? It looks like the one Payne used...Do you feel that ab muscles get involved in the stroke at all ? Did you ever try a little "squeeze" of the right ab on the follow through ?

  • @golfdaddie69

The lie angle is extremely important, the putter must be sitting flush with the turf. Shawn's stroke is not straight back straight through because that requires manipulation and is not a natural motion. Try not to have conscious thought with the ab muscles, just feel momentum swinging the putter back and through.

  • ITs all good before you get to the wind up and shank or ground the ball haha. Practice practice practice thats all it takes

  • Thanks Shawn. This video was unbelievably helpful. I changed my stance and now have much better distance control. You are a star. Thanks again. steph.

  • Thank you Shawn, I needed the follow through

  • Thanks shawn,I never realised all my putting woes were caused by me standing too far from the ball, the electric eel quote really brought it home, thanks again your a star!

  • How is the snow melting, yet it's ten degrees outside

  • Wow, thats a great tip about the lining up with the name or arrow on the ball. I would never have thought of that, as simple as it obviously is. Thats going to be a great help on the course for me. Thanks

  • Thank you very much! These tips will definitely help with my putting accuracy. Keep up the good work!

  • I never seens such a good putting video before~ Feels like a real life teacher~ AAA+++

  • Such a natural teacher. Concise and informative at the same time. Thank you.

  • You're a great teacher shawn. I wish you taught in Ireland!

    Thanks.

  • ok so i havn't been very confident with my putting stroke...every putt i take i end up pulling it...i have a putting eye line which i have been working on my stroke the last couple of weeks but am still pulling it....any suggestions on why i mite be doing that and how to fix it?

  • Shawn, I love your tips. I feel like I am not striking the top half of the ball. Any suggestions? Thanks Jay

  • Short , Medium & Long - perfect for somelike me who is just learning the game

  • Shawn,

at 2:30 you say that we want to strike the ball at the bottom of the arc to get the ball rolling.

I have heard that you strike the ball above its equator on the upswing to get the ball rolling end over end.

Are these the same or am I misguided.

Both make sense to me. I hit up on the ball.

    Thanks, Creat Video.

  • Hey tenaciousbee; nice question! There is a reason 99% of putters have loft to them; so that the ball can be raised above the grass ever so slightly to give it the best roll without resistance against any grain that would cause it to bounce slightly off line; so there is a need to allow for a slight bit of skid; Shawn

  • Superb video. Using your feet as a guage to putting length - brilliant!

  • Putting has always hurt my game.

I have the technique i just seem never to be able to line the putts up properly.

  • One guy that really knows his stuff is Geoff Mangum at the putting zone; we really enjoyed how he showed us how to find the fall line for reading our putts as well as how to aim your body and head properly to remove any perception problem you might have with your aim; see if there is a certified guy in your area! Very much worth it! Shawn

  • Helped me the first time out on the course, thank you!

    L. Zaikos

  • great info, thanks alot

  • excellent lesson,

    very helpful and well explained,

  • Just the advice i was looking for, clear and positive. I have got near or on the green (rarely) on short par 3's, but then the 4 putt's following is soul destroying and seriously frustrating. I aim to take this lesson with me: short, medium and long. Thanks Mr Clement.

  • I've been using this without thinking about the degree to which I come back in the swing. this will definately help me graduate my distances better more consistantly.

also on my putter(I use a shark heavy ) I tend to put my right index finger on the shaft for short puts

  • great little lesson- the sort of thing I've been looking for. I'm a 19 handicapper. looking to come down.

Just off to the course now to practice putting!

  • thanks alot this will help my game 10 fold

  • good tips about balance- I'm a beginner and rubbish at putting!!!

  • thanks mate i will look at trying this out thanks

  • great tips. One thing I've been doing lately is picking a spot 6 inches directly behind my putter and making sure I'm drawing the club straight back, and on the follow through letting the weight of the club hit the ball, taking all my hands and wrists out of it, I dropped 10 strokes this year already! The distance tips are great, definitely taking this to the practice green, thanks!

  • Yeah great advice he didnt putt one ball!!

  • craigsmart81:

Did you watch the whole thing? Probably not.

    Yet another great vid Shawn!

  • did you see that 2 way curve before the hole ?

lol aiming is one thing but an s curve before the hole you can't see...

  • Thanks ffor the lessons Shawn. I started golf a month ago and went from a 68 to a 48 on 9 holes. the putting is killing me though. I will try measuring the putts today as i have absolutely no feel for them. I thnk its gona work great. Thanks again. your vids r very helpful for rec golfers who cant afford professional lessons.

  • sweet! i went from shooting a 63 to 36 on 9. (on a par 30 9 hole though.) Shawns the best.

  • Im gonna win at minigolf tomorrow because OF THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • Remember that I make 10% of your golf winnings! :) LOL

    Shawn

  • he reminds me of Jeff Corwin on animal planet. tehy looke alike and have the same energy.

  • Thanks for the tips. Very enthusiastic. Solid video. Thanks.

  • This is a very good video :)

    5/5 *

  • Just fantastic.. If i put well in a round, i shoot brilliantly.. sadly this only happens in about 3% of my rounds.. I think your tips are going to help me score better..

I'll update you after my next round :)

    Many, many thanks..

    Rob

  • one of the best training videos i've seen yet. i never had a routine on the green, i was always putting on a prayer, but now thanks to you and i can have a chance to beat my golf buddy.

  • Awesome video. Your swing thoughts helped me drain about 4 impressive putts last round. A+

  • I loved your introductory comment: "Ten degrees outside and the snow is melting!"

    You are entertaining and instructive.

  • great Video. Good Work

  • I was thinking of getting a belly putter, is this a good idea because i thought i worked very well for vj singh. Also can I change my original 35" putter into a belly putter via my local club?

  • Probably not, but it's worth asking :)

  • Thank you so much!!!!!!!!! A++ on the video

  • Thank you for the great advice!

  • exelecent advice you have really hit the nail on the head where i am going wrong i can never get the right momentom this will help me a great deal i am playing golf in a bit i will let you kno how i got on thanks again .

  • Thank you for providing me with golf instructions that I can understand. Your videos have given me more insight into this game that any other golf instructions I have used. I can see immediate results I have just ordered your DVD set and cant wait to work them into my practice sessions. Thanks again for making this game more enjoyable for me.

  • you help me more than my real lessons, the chipping videos especialy

  • These guys are all Leadbetter academy students and they are all asking me how I swing the club its awesome. I am gonna do US open qualifying this year and your teaching has given me the confidence to do it. Thanks so much for the time and research you have put into the golf swing. If you taught in the US everyone would know who you where. I hope to make it to Richmand Hills one day and let you see what I have learned.

  • Very Cool Scott! Thanks for taking the time to write man!

    Shawn

  • Hey Shawn just got the DVD last week and loved it. I drove a ball 320 yards Sunday and I surprised myself. The way you go about a shot has helped me so much. I say the same things you do in my head then bust it down the fairway. What was that feeling again works so good for me. I live in Orlando and there is many touring pros where I practice and they all are starting to take notice of my swing.

  • Unbelievably thorough! Thank You.

    Dan

  • Great Video, Gonna use this info and have a Putt later on!!!

  • I thought it was about time that I thanked you for all these great video-lessons. Many of them have helped me improve my game. Time now for the bread-and-putter. Thanks again from Denmark!

  • Hi shaw, I am 16 years hold and I play a lot of golf. I would like to know what can I do to bring my game to an other level if I d'on't have a personal coach. Just to let you know I'm playing around the par. If I always want to play under par what do I have to do.

    P.-S good vids

  • You explain things very well ! Thank you.Briango2

  • ooooooooooo..... nice video! That really helped me alot. Thanks !=D

  • In the video you emphasized arms hanging freely from the shoulders. Does it follow that the contact point between the club face and the ball must be in the middle of your stance? Second, you have emphasized forming a capital "Y" with your arms and the club. I putt with the club aligned with my lead arm with a flat wrist through out the stroke, so it looks more like a small "y". Would you suggest me to copy your stroke instead?

  • good tips, thanks

  • Excellent advice, i,m thinking of purchasing a zen oracle putter to help me, is it a good tool or should i just stick to a basic putter and have a few lessons,

    many thanks Gary

  • Shawn,

Great putting advice. In fact, many, many of your suggestions and lessons I take from the computer to the course.

One unrelated question I'd like to quickly ask as I'm confused as all get out.

At the top of my backswing (not with the puttin stroke), say a 7 iron, should my right (I'm right handed) wrist be cupped, (like a waiter carrying a tray) or should my right wrist be hinged like casting a fishing rod?

Thanks for everything. You're the greatest.

  • just taken golf up again the putting was a bit rusty you have helped me out big time many thanks

  • i was just wandering i do my putting position different, but it still works for me do u think i should still change????

  • Thanks for the alignment tips. Makes sense on the living room carpet, now for the green!

  • this helps so much! i used to take it back about 4 inches and explode through the ball, but now taht im aligned better , i can just do what you said, point a to point b im going to go try it in st george in a few weeks thanks again -future pro

  • I have always used the ball lettering to line up my putts and drives. It is true though that your mind can play tricks once you stand over the ball. Trust it! I struggle with distance more than anything.I will definateley use your tips to help with this.

    Thanks Shawn!

  • Thanks for the nice comment thelukos!

    Shawn

  • Is there any differences between a $20 putter and a $200 putter?

  • Betwen 20 and 200 yes big time! Between 100 and 200 no;

This is where you want to invest very wisely; go to the local shop or a very well equipped green grass shop where you can try the putters out on the putting green; feel which one suits your eye and tracks the line the best with ease of distance control; then make best friends with it, pay the price they ask for and never switch again...:) Shawn

  • hi shaun could u go on my user and see what im doing wrong in my golf swing!!! i feel if i have to stop in my backswing because i may overswing?? so could u please check out my video!!! thanks!

  • Thanks for the info on trusting your alignment from afar instead of in position. I will apply!

  • Thank you very much for posting the video.

I really liked the posture and muscle part of the lesson.

    Thank you.

  • Best putting lesson I have ever seen...Great instructor...Many thanks...cheers Freddy
